–This study looks at Spike Lee's Malcolm X as an important text in understanding Afrocentric perspectives that challenge the ideological stereotypes of mainstream Hollywood film. Malcolm X intervenes between Lee, the filmmaker, and the powerful media industry and is emblematic of the larger discussion of hegemonic and counter-hegemonic views in media culture. This film is not only an interesting case study but a significant part of an ongoing cultural discourse that is as relevant now as when Malcolm X lived. The relevance of this essay lies in its contribution to the discussion of media perspectives with a focus on furthering media literacy. It aids the viewer in understanding the social discourse surrounding a mediated racist ideology and the ongoing cultural work of social equality in the United States. Beginning with a research question that sought to discover what film criticism actually is, the article uncovers important distinctions between scholarly and practice-orientated conceptions of contemporary film criticism. Through a qualitative mixed-method approach, the article first explores the relevant scholarly literature and a sample of content carriers of film criticism before moving into fieldwork to test findings. Through the process of triangulating these data-sets emerges the motivation to create a schools approach for post-millennia film criticism. The empirical data cover North America and the United Kingdom but the findings may have explanatory potential beyond these territories. Beginning by looking at research on criticism from such prominent scholars as Noël Carrol and Terry Eagleton, a dialectic is uncovered between aesthetic evaluations and socio-political comment. These ideas are then tested in fieldwork by undertaking semi-structured, in-depth qualitative interviews with 30 film critics at two major international film festivals. There is a clear disconnect between scholarly ideas about criticism and two-thirds of the film critics’ conceptions of criticism in their daily routines. From this particular difference of opinion, an Academic School in comparison to Trade and Populist Schools emerges. In turn, this prompts a reappraisal of content carrier data approximated against the fieldwork data and leads to the conceptualising of additional schools: Sophisticated, Fandom and Consumer. 相似文献

In this paper, I argue that listening to a film is as significant as watching it; in spite of what seems like a formalist argument, I examine in what ways such an approach intervenes in the production of knowledge around Philippine history and Filipina/o bodies. In Kidlat Tahimik's film, Mababangong Bangungot, an overprivileging of the visual aids and abets the film's masculinist nationalism, despite the best efforts of critics to find a “third term.” That third term just might come from listening to the film, which delivers its own kind of postcolonial and feminist critique, one which impacts how we think about contemporary communication and cultural studies. 相似文献

Various studies report that cultural journalism increasingly focuses on service and entertainment instead of serious arts coverage. The press prioritizes popular culture over traditional high arts to a growing extent. However, this shift in journalistic attention does not necessarily signify a straightforward decline in aesthetic standards, as popular cultural forms like film have developed along the lines of high art principles in the past decades. This article charts trends in American, Dutch, French, and German film journalism between 1955 and 2005. It demonstrates that coverage is typified by a serious aesthetic approach from the 1970s onwards. The principles of art are seen to steer journalists’ attention to an important degree: the review remains the predominant journalistic genre, and newspapers devote more attention to films by prestigious directors than strictly commercial moviemakers. As such, film’s prominence in the press does not seem to indicate a decline in serious cultural journalism but rather a revaluation of a popular cultural form. 相似文献
