Background:Over a decade ago, the Hill report argued that a shift in vision was required to change the perception of National Health Service (NHS) Library and Knowledge Services (LKS) in England from “book repositories” to essential services that underpin clinical decision-making by patients, carers, and health care professionals. Health Education England''s Knowledge for Healthcare: A Development Framework for Library and Knowledge Services in England 2015–2020 advocates embedding librarians within clinical and management teams in order to provide access to high-quality evidence at the point of need.Case Presentation:In April 2019, Royal Papworth Hospital relocated twelve miles from its historic village location in Papworth Everard to its new state-of-the-art hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The design for this new hospital did not accommodate a traditional library space and therefore necessitated a transformation of the LKS. The organization opted to embed the LKS staff into the clinical setting and relegate 80% of the print collection to off-site storage. This project and its associated steps are presented as an example of health care library transformation. Conclusion:Embedding the LKS team in the clinical setting, engaging in proactive outreach activity, and improving our marketing led to a 44% increase in literature searches requested compared to the same eleven-month period in the previous year. A 40% decrease in our print book loans indicates additional barriers to using a click-and-collect service and the need for greater investment in our e-book provision. However, early outcomes for our best-fit service transformation are positive. Having an open, dual mindset has enabled the service to embrace change and maximize emerging opportunities to collaborate with clinical staff on new projects.  相似文献

In an era when library budgets are being reduced, Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC's) can offer practical and viable alternatives to the delivery of costly face‐to‐face training courses. In this study, guest writers Gil Young from Health Care Libraries Unit ‐ North, Lisa McLaren from Brighton and Sussex Medical School and Liverpool University PhD student Michelle Maden describe the outcomes of a funded project they led to develop a MOOC to deliver literature search training for health librarians. Funded by Health Education England, the MOOC was developed by the Library and Information Health Network North West as a pilot project that ran for six weeks. In particular, the MOOC target audience is discussed, how content was developed for the MOOC, promotion and participation, cost‐effectiveness, evaluation, the impact of the MOOC and recommendations for future development. Objective: The paper provides an overview of a strategy to increase utilization of online bibliographic databases by public health workers. Methods: A web-based survey of professional staff in the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services was conducted to assess their use of and interest in training in online bibliographic databases. Based on the findings from the assessment, the department, in collaboration with the state university, provided brief ninety-minute training sessions for interested staff on the use of PubMed.Results: Seventy of 115 (61%) of staff completed the survey. Only 39% of staff reported using an online bibliographic database to conduct a literature search in the past year, and only 10% (n=7) reported having ever received any training in their use. Perceived proficiency with the use of PubMed was higher upon completion of the brief training. The majority of training participants (n=27) indicated that they were very likely to use PubMed in the next year to search the literature. Conclusions: A collaboratively designed training can increase public health workers'' proficiency in and intentions of using online bibliographic databases.

Highlights

  • A web-based assessment of Montana public health workers identified a lack of training in and use of online bibliographic databases and an interest in receiving training in their use.
  • Brief training in the use of online bibliographic databases increased state public health workers'' self-assessed proficiency in and intentions of using these resources.

Implications

  • Low-cost strategies, such as inexpensive web-survey tools, to assess staff needs and brief training sessions for public health workers were effective in increasing public health workers'' self-assessed proficiency in using online bibliographic databases.
  • Collaboration between state health departments and universities to design and provide relevant training in the use of online bibliographic databases is an effective approach to addressing public health workers'' skills in using these resources.

Abstract

Edward G. Miner Library, the health sciences library at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is reaching out beyond its usual user group to improve health knowledge of members of six inner-city African-American churches and one community center. With the Congregation Healthy Heart Action Partnership (CHHAP) and the Rochester Public Library as partners, and with funding from the National Library of Medicine, Miner is providing Internet access at the churchesand training church and community members to use reliable health Web sites such as MedlinePlus. A train-the-trainer approach and follow-up meetings empower church members to carry the information to others. In addition to trainees learning about reliable health Web resources and Rochester Public Library's health resources, new relationships between libraries and churches have resulted. It is hoped that this program will help reduce health disparities between Rochester's inner-city minorities and residents of the surrounding suburbs.  相似文献

NHS knowledge and library staff are a highly specialist workforce delivering an economic benefit of £77 million per annum to the health service in England. To achieve their full potential and meet the changing needs of the NHS, it is vital that the workforce remains up to date through the continuing development of their skills, knowledge, and behaviours. This article outlines the work of Health Education England to gain Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP—The Library and Information Association) quality accreditation for the short course offers delivered through the NHS Knowledge for Healthcare Learning Academy. It summarises the benefits of this accreditation for Health Education England, for employers, and for knowledge and library staff participating in the short courses. Learning points from the experience of the accreditation process are described and shared.  相似文献

In this profile, Kristine M. Alpi, AHIP, FMLA, Medical Library Association (MLA) president, 2021–2022, is described as committed to public health, professional development, and the growth and evolution of MLA. She teaches and speaks on the shared health impact from interactions among animals, humans, and the environment, and she mentors graduate students and fellows in librarianship and informatics. Alpi earned her PhD in educational research and policy analysis in 2018 and directs the Oregon Health & Science University Library.

Open in a separate windowIt''s a distinct honor to be able to tell you about the career of Kristine Markovich Alpi, Medical Library Association (MLA) president for 2021–2022.I first met Kris when she arrived at the New York Academy of Medicine, where she was starting a job as education coordinator for what was then the Region 1 Regional Medical Library. She had, however, already begun preparing herself for excellence in library services, having worked as a hospital librarian in Indiana and then participating in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Associate Fellowship Program.Once settled in New York, Kris pursued her master''s in public health, enrolling in the Hunter College School of the Health Professions. After working as an information services librarian and lecturer at the Weill Cornell Medical College, she took on the position of library manager at the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene''s Public Health Library, where she directly served the public health professionals that served the largest city in the United States. She also continued as a lecturer in public health at Weill Cornell, teaching students in evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, and biostatistics. With her relocation to North Carolina as director of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Library of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University (NCSU), Kris entered a new area of public health—that of the shared health impact from interactions among animals, humans, and the environment. Her recent coauthored article that appeared in the NLM''s Director''s Blog outlines the importance of One Health—these shared public health impacts [1]. She continued to teach, now emphasizing the place of animals in the public health universe. She also began work on her PhD in educational research and policy analysis from NCSU, which she completed in 2018.December 2018 began a new phase in Kris''s career as she moved to Portland and assumed the directorship of the Oregon Health & Science University Library. As part of her responsibilities as university librarian and associate professor in the Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology, she still educates students on informatics and epidemiology and serves as a mentor to graduate students and fellows.Kris''s work in public health has extended to educating consumers by locating accurate and timely web-based information. From 1998 to 2009, she used her expertise in Spanish to build the Spanish side of the bilingual web portal NOAH (New York Online Access to Health). After grant funding ceased, NOAH became a volunteer-driven project—Kris managed the Spanish content, as well as volunteering to work on the redesign committee so that the new interface was user-friendly to Spanish speakers. For that work, she was one of the awardees when NOAH was given the Thomson Scientific/Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award in 2006.MLA has benefited from Kris''s service. She has been a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) since 1997. She served on the National Program Committee three times and has been elected to the Nominating Committee twice and to the MLA Board. As a member and eventual chair of the Public Health and Health Administration Section (now Caucus), Kris worked with a committee to create a comprehensive list of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) that would benefit searching for the public health community; many of these terms have been added to the MeSH vocabulary. She also chaired the Research Caucus and served on the editorial board of the Journal of the Medical Library Association. In 2021, Kris was selected as a Fellow of MLA.I look forward to Kris Alpi''s presidential year. Her commitment to professional development and to the growth and evolution of MLA will benefit all members. Please join me in welcoming her to her new position.  相似文献

Objective:In 2018, the Network of the National Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) launched a sponsorship program to support public library staff in completing the Medical Library Association''s Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS). The objectives of our study were to: (1) determine whether completion of the sponsored specialization improved ability to provide consumer health information; (2) identify new health information services, programming, and outreach activities at public libraries; (3) investigate benefits of the specialization; and (4) determine the impact of sponsorship on obtaining and continuing the specialization. Methods:We used REDCap to administer a 16-question survey in August 2019 to 224 public library staff who were sponsored during the first year of the program. We measured competence in providing consumer health information aligned with the eight Core Competencies for Providing Consumer Health Information Services [1] as well as new activities at public libraries, benefits of the specialization to public library staff, career gains, and the likelihood of continuing the specialization based on funding. Results:More than 80% of 136 participants reported an increase in core consumer health competencies, with a statistically significant improvement in mean competency scores after completing the specialization. Ninety percent of participants have continued their engagement with NNLM, and more than half offered new health information programs and services. While more than half planned to renew the specialization or obtain the Level II specialization, 72% indicated they would not continue without NNLM sponsorship. Conclusions:Findings indicate that NNLM sponsorship of the CHIS specialization was successful in increasing the capacity of public library staff to provide health information to their communities.  相似文献

Background: The Northern Territory Department of Health and Families’ (DHF) Library supports education programs for all staff. DHF is implementing an elearning strategy, which may be viewed as a vehicle for coordinating the education function throughout the organisation. Objective: The objective of this study is to explore the concept of elearning in relation to the Library’s role in implementing an organisation‐wide elearning strategy. Methods: The main findings of a literature search about the effectiveness of elearning in health professionals’ education, and the responsibility and roles of health librarians in elearning are described. A case study approach is used to outline the current role and future opportunities and challenges for the Library. Discussion: The case study presents the organisation’s strategic planning context. Four areas of operational activity which build on the Library’s current educational activities are suggested: the integration of library resources ‘learning objects’ within a Learning Management System; developing online health information literacy training programs; establishing a physical and virtual ‘elearningLibrary/Centre’; developing collaborative partnerships, taking on new responsibilities in elearning development, and creating a new elearning librarian role. Conclusion: The study shows that the Library’s role is fundamental to developing the organisation’s elearning capacity and implementing an organisation‐wide elearning strategy.  相似文献

The desire to consolidate resources into one website, that of the Public Health Agency of Canada, was behind the decision to close the Canadian Health Network (CHN) in April 2008. Although CHN set new standards in online health information, this decision was made for a variety of reasons, including to better reach both a professional audience and the general public. The Public Health Agency of Canada recognizes the contributions made to the CHN from librarians and has committed to work closely with all of the CHN's stakeholders and partners to consider new ways to provide health information online.  相似文献

Kaleida Health Libraries, in partnership with the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, presented "Seniors Connect: A Health Information Project." The program was funded by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo and the Kaleida Health Foundation. The purpose of the project was to teach African-American and Hispanic senior citizens or their caregivers residing in the city of Buffalo how to search the Internet to find quality, accurate, understandable health information. Attendees were taught to distinguish quality information from inaccurate, misleading, and fraudulent material. A total of fourteen training sessions were offered. The Seniors Connect program was initiated with health fair at each branch library, conducted by Kaleida Health staff, to provide an opportunity for participants to learn about health care services available in their community; observe demonstrations of health information searches on the Internet; learn about new treatment modalities for diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid abnormalities, and hypertension; and interact with area health care providers and library staff. The sessions were highly rated by attendees and many participants expressed their gratitude for a program geared specifically toward seniors.  相似文献

This article examines the development of the St George's Hospital Medical School Library public health information service. Begun in 1997 as a pilot project to support Public Health Specialist Registrars in South Thames West, it is now an established part of postgraduate training in the region. An outline of the service is described, including the evolution of the post of Public Health Librarian. Issues influencing the development of the service, and the establishment of the Librarian as part of the public health network are discussed. This is a transferable model of public health information provision, which as a centralized resource makes best use of available funding. As a LIS model it is an effective and efficient way of maximizing resources, and delivering a service to a specialist user group that is spread across a wide geographical area.  相似文献

This article will describe a year-long (2010–11) joint project between Columbia University Medical Center's Health Sciences Library and the Institute for Family Health (IFH), a network of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) serving disadvantaged populations in New York State. This National Institutes of Health-funded pilot project aimed to (a) determine the medical literature and training needs of IFH personnel, (b) develop generic licensing agreements with publishers that would enable a health sciences library to provide access to electronic resources for FQHC personnel, and (c) develop reference/education services for IFH personnel. How the reference and education aims were met will be described and discussed here as the lessons learned from this project may be useful to librarians considering doing instructional outreach to unaffiliated health professionals working at FQHCs nationwide.  相似文献

The Community Access Library Line of Los Angeles County Public Library has provided multilingual information and referral to Southern California since 1979 through a toll-free 800 telephone service. Designed to overcome barriers of language, social services complexity and Los Angeles County's large size for ethnic communities, the toll-free number has provided extended benefits to the public and the library community, making CALL a central contact for the County Library and the designated referral source for literacy programs in Southern California. These benefits include convenience for the public, ease of publicity, effective distribution of library resources and staff skills, and good management information, suggesting that toll-free services have a useful place in library services.  相似文献

From June 1994 to the summer of 1995 the National Library of Canada carried out the Electronic Publications Pilot Project. The objective of this Project was to identify and understand issues that the National Library of Canada and other Canadian libraries would encounter in handling electronic publications and online collections. A small number of formally published Canadian on-line journals were acquired, controlled, catalogued and stored permanently at the Library. Public access was provided on the Internet through Gopher and the World Wide Web. Several areas of the Library were involved in the three teams which were set up to pursue the Project's goals. The members of the Technical Services team received equipment upgrades and underwent a considerable amount of training in order to accomplish assigned tasks. Identifying appropriate titles and obtaining copyright clearance for those selected proved to be a very time-consuming exercise. The problems and issues encountered during the acquisitions, serials check-in and cataloguing activities confirmed that dealing efficiently with electronic publications was indeed a new challenge for the staff of the National Library. At the end of the project, recommendations from the Technical Services team were submitted and they will be incorporated into the Final Report of the Project which is expected to be available to the public in the fall of 1995.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Public libraries today are gingerly stepping into the emerging philosophy among successful businesses around the world: customer experience. Libraries are hiring staff with “customer experience” in their title, others are curious and want to learn more. Most of the resources currently available to libraries hoping to get started take a corporate approach particularly as it impacts financial success. The bottom line is that all of us are in the customer experience business, whether we know it or not. It goes to the heart of everything we do – how staff interact with the public and each other, the value libraries provide to a community, even the cleanliness of the restrooms. Additionally, many of those companies that library users experience in their daily lives – health care, insurance, retail – have already jumped on the customer experience bandwagon, overall raising the public’s expectation of what they should experience in libraries. How and where to start? How does a library build a road map to develop a customer experience philosophy and culture, which staff will embrace and support? When building a new library how do you design that building using a customer experience lens? Columbus Metropolitan Library has spent the last 5 years mapping out a customer experience practice, which includes staff training, journey mapping, customer insights, customer engagement training, and library design.  相似文献
