A prototype system is created that integrates a microfiche catalog into an online computer system for bibliographic control. Costs and operational data are collected and analyzed. The system permits the more economical microfiche storage of catalog records than would be feasible for comparable online magnetic disk storage. Experimental tests demonstrate the feasibility of the online microfiche catalog system for use in library technical services and retrieval of bibliographic data. The primary result of the project is the creation of a completely operational facility, including all equipment, software, procedures, and data bases necessary to demonstrate the system. A second set of results is derived from the experimental use of the system and the evaluation of costs and times for various operations. The cost effectiveness of the online microfiche catalog is demonstrated.  相似文献

Sixty-one undergraduate and graduate students in psychology, economics, and librarianship provided the subject terms they would use to search an academic library catalog in 30 hypothetical search instances. The subject indexing tested was that of the Library of Congress, which is used in most large libraries in the United States. The large number of responses on each search instance enabled an unusually detailed, systematic evaluation of various aspects of the LC approach. Results (including evidence of many inadequacies) were produced on see references, subject/place order, noun/adjective order, specific entry, direct entry, and a priori probability of subject term matching. It was found to be very difficult to develop a good strategy for searching a catalog using LC subject headings. The overriding conclusion was that the LC subject cataloging approach is badly in need of rationalization.  相似文献

ERLI was asked by the French TELECOM to develop a specific system to query the professional headings of the French Yellow Pages directory. Approximately 4 million end users now have access (via their “Minitel” terminals) to some 6 million professionals registered under 2500 different headings. (A second application has also been developed using a similar system: the Minitel Applications Directory, which gives information on all the available applications in the Minitel network.)Although the retrieval of a heading is a necessary step in accessing data, it is of no real interest to the user, who wishes only to retrieve the phone number of a given professional or tradesperson.The general aims of the Natural Language System (NLS) are to facilitate access to headings by intelligent query processing (or even to bypass completely the necessity of choosing between headings).This is done through: • The association of a specific knowledge base to the list of headings, • The construction of a “grammar” ensuring a consistent interpretation of the queries.ERLI's system is as an alternative to the existing one, which is based on a key-word indexing technique. The weaknesses and insufficiencies of such a technique are well known, especially in this context, where queries are expressed by unqualified users, who are unfamiliar with the data (i.e., the headings of the directory).Finally, it is important to note that the NLS was developed with regard to industrial considerations (in particular, the minimizing of the average processing time per query). The system is not a prototype. Extensive on-side testing is scheduled to begin in July 1988 and a complete installation will be carried out at the end of the year.  相似文献

A technique of online instruction and assistance to bibliographic data base searchers called Individualized Instruction for Data Access (IIDA) is being developed by Drexel University. IIDA assists searchers by providing feedback based on real-time analysis while searches are being performed. Extensive help facilities which draw on this analysis are available to users. Much of the project's experimental work, as described elsewhere [1–3], is concerned with the process of searching and the behavior of searchers. This paper will largely address itself to the project's computer system, which is being developed by subcontract with the Franklin Institute's Science Information Services.  相似文献

This article addresses file maintenance of subject headings in the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE, a bibliographic retrieval file which is indexed using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), NLM's subject authority. The emphasis is class maintenance in which sets of records in MEDLINE are changed by maintenance actions which reflect yearly changes in MeSH. Specific types of maintenance action are described with examples to highlight problem areas. Class maintenance failures, checking class maintenance, and informing end-users of MeSH changes resulting in class maintenance are discussed. Technical constraints and feasibility are not analyzed in detail; rather, the approach is geared toward requirements and impact of maintenance from the standpoint of vocabulary specialists and end-users. The article concludes with a brief statement on defining file maintenance policy.  相似文献

Expert finding addresses the task of retrieving and ranking talented people on the subject of user query. It is a practical issue in the Community Question Answering networks. Recruiters looking for knowledgeable people for their job positions are the most important clients of expert finding systems. In addition to employee expertise, the cost of hiring new staff is another significant concern for organizations. An efficient solution to cope with this concern is to hire T-shaped experts that are cost-effective. In this study, we have proposed a new deep model for T-shaped experts finding based on Convolutional Neural Networks. The proposed model tries to match queries and users by extracting local and position-invariant features from their corresponding documents. In other words, it detects users’ shape of expertise by learning patterns from documents of users and queries simultaneously. The proposed model contains two parallel CNN’s that extract latent vectors of users and queries based on their corresponding documents and join them together in the last layer to match queries with users. Experiments on a large subset of Stack Overflow documents indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method against baselines in terms of NDCG, MRR, and ERR evaluation metrics.  相似文献

文章阐述了黑龙江省图书馆俄文文献书目数据库回溯建库中早期俄文文献有关著录的主要问题,其中包括俄文文献书目数据库规则的制订;俄文文献书目数据著录的基本原则与格式;1945年前俄文文献书目数据库著录中遇到问题的处理方式等。作者认为,黑龙江省图书馆俄文文献书目数据库回溯建库著录遇到的问题及解决办法具有一定的典型意义,可为各大型图书馆回溯建库参考。  相似文献
