This article details the work of the Birmingham Initiative, a Methodist inspired, ecumenical research project that operated in Birmingham, in the West Midlands of the United Kingdom between 1995 and 1999. As the Christian Education Development Officer employed by this project, the author undertook doctoral research among twenty-six inner-city, Black majority churches from Methodist, Baptist Anglican, and Reformed Church traditions. One of the central aims of the research was to create the first African-centered Black Christian Education of Liberation for the British context. The major outcome of this research was the creation of the first practical Black Christian education curriculum in Britain, entitled Growing into Hope.  相似文献

Assessment of the functional vision of visually handicapped children is currently carried out by teachers using materials which are visible because they reflect incident light. The back-lit, light-emitting screen of the microcomputer can present two-dimensional images more closely matched to the 'optimum' than is possible through conventional means. Microcomputers have a part to play in the assessment of functional vision in the classroom. The authors, who are Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) research associates at Birmingham University's Research Centre for the Education of the Visually Handicapped (director: Dr M.J. Tobin), describe the software produced by some years' research at that centre.  相似文献

A placement at the National Institute of Conductive Education (NICE) in Birmingham for children with motor disorders is strongly preferred over mainstream or special schools by some parents, but it has been noted that this is usually refused following the current statementing process. Although funding constraints have been articulated, Angela Morgan, a Research Fellow at the Wolverhampton University Policy Research Institute, and Kevin Hogan, also at the University of Wolverhampton, contend in this article that other explanations are possible, as variability remains in placement decisions. The experiences of education administrators working within the special educational needs departments of local education authorities who make the ultimate decision regarding school placement have hitherto been unexplored. This study offers findings from an exploratory qualitative study, which suggests that administrators are working from disparate understandings of conductive education within an arena fraught with conflict. Recommendations derived from the study include further in-service training for education administrators and prior training for individuals seeking a career in education administration to enhance collaborative working partnerships between administrators and parents.  相似文献

Barrie Wade (Reader in English in Education, in the School of Education, The University of Birmingham) and Maggie Moore (Senior Lecturer at Newman College, Birmingham) focus on ways in which students with special educational needs perceive themselves. They have discovered that a significant number of a cross-cultural sample, most of whom are denied school responsibilities, felt inadequate compared with their peers. It appears that more consultation, with serious implications for school policies, is necessary to lessen feelings of difference.  相似文献

Abstract

This article makes an “exercise in the archaeology of education” and focuses on the City of Birmingham (UK) in the year 1935 where the Education Committee allowed an experiment on the use of classroom film in senior elementary schools. Arrangements were made to provide projectors, films, operators, and screens for a series of exhibits at 80 schools. The aim of the experiment was to test the value of cinema for class teaching purposes. This article argues that this experiment with sound film could equally be considered an experiment in cultural learning. The first section describes the experiment and the local context in which it took place. The second section broadens the perspective by providing context beyond the local level that puts the experiment in time and place. The third and final section picks up on some of the findings of the first two sections and considers contemporary sources, mainly articles published in the British Film Institute’s film magazine Sight and Sound, as well as recent scholarship on both educational and documentary film in order to discuss the notions of “background” and “excursive” film and to show that the experiment was a genuine adventure in cultural learning.  相似文献

Over ten years research into photography and education has been undertaken at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design in collaboration with the Arts Council of England, West Midlands Arts, and local community photography agencies. A range of case studies were undertaken to explore how young people used photography, particularly in self‐empowerment. These ranged from students in Further Education challenging concepts of visual stereotypes of disability, young lesbian, gay and bisexual people constructing their own website, and individuals and groups creating and modifying their own images in a shopping centre. A democratic action research methodology was developed to enable the young people to establish their own agenda and generate standards for evaluating their work. A particular feature of the later research was a self‐reflective journal that was shared between the researcher and everyone engaged in the project. This resource has considerable potential in photography and elsewhere in art and design education.  相似文献

This study examines the significance of acoustic conditions on the reception of sound signals in children with multi sensory impairments, using distraction/behavioural observation audiometry techniques. The important factor in initiating a response proved to be the + 10dBA signal over background noise level. Joan Graham, peripatetic teacher of pre-school children with hearing and multi sensory impairments, City of Birmingham education authority, and Brian Fraser, School of Education, Birmingham University, discuss these findings with reference to educational practice and classroom design, with the aim of improving conditions for the development of residual hearing in children with multi sensory impairments.  相似文献

'Statementing' is an ugly, clumsy and depersonalising word, which has become established in the vocabulary of special education. It is not too late to root it out, before it permanently damages the more flexible approach to the assessment of special educational needs for which the 1981 Education Act provides an opportunity, writes Colin J. Smith, lecturer in education, Department of Special Education, Birmingham University.  相似文献
