Asian Americans are commonly perceived as the diligent and high‐achieving “model minority.” This positive stereotype has negative consequences for this ethnic minority group because it trivializes their social and mental health problems. This image of success has made many overlook the true nature of the struggles many Asian American families have to face in the United States. Scientific literature suggests that Asian American children experience major adjustment problems in school including loneliness, isolation, withdrawal, rejection, anxiety, low self‐esteem, and interpersonal distress. Cultural barriers exist between the Asian and the dominant society and influence Asian Americans' cognitive appraisal and coping choices when personal and emotional problems arise. These barriers also prevent clinicians from identifying and subsequently providing effective mental health services for Asian American children and their families. In this article, the authors examine the Asian cultural conceptions of mental health and various cultural barriers in an attempt to promote cultural understanding and competence among clinicians working with Asian American children and their families. Recommendations for clinical practice and future research directions are provided. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

This study tested the proposition that national similarity between counselor and client results in improved counseling outcome. Using a repeated-measures, quasi-experimental design, eight female counselors (four Turkish, four American) saw 16 volunteer, expatriate female American clients for single, individual counseling sessions. Results indicated no differences on (a) clients’ and counselors’ ratings of working alliance and of progress on goals, or (b) clients’ ratings of utilization intent as a function of counselor nationality. Irrespective of nationality, clients’ ratings of working alliance were higher than their counselors. These results echo a trend suggesting that clients’ preferences for cultural/ethnic similarity dissipate as the research methodology approximates actual counseling sessions. Additionally, local mental health service providers may be a viable resource for expatriate Americans.  相似文献

Per the Bleaching Syndrome, people of color, including African, Asian, and Latino Americans, are both victims and perpetrators of color discrimination. The Bleaching Syndrome encompasses perceptual, psychological, and behavioral sectors that affect students' schooling experiences. Education professionals, including teachers, administrators, and counselors, must address these factors to promote mental and emotional health among learners. In this article, I discuss how the Bleaching Syndrome and color bias affects dark-complexioned African American children in contemporary US schools.  相似文献

Very little has been done to assist Native Americans in the procurement of mental health services. Cultural barriers and lack of understanding have limited the contact between Native Americans and the predominantly White mental health delivery system. The project described herein attempted to decrease and neutralize some of the impediments to Native Americans receiving services by training them to provide minimal mental health care for their own people and by training them to gain access to various state service agencies.  相似文献

Counselors value both the confidentiality of client information and the sanctity of human life. These values come into apparent conflict, however, when counselors work with life-endangering clients in such situations as child abuse and homicidal and suicidal threats. Legal incursions into the activities of mental health professionals should not threaten counselors into abandoning good clinical judgment or into refraining from treating potentially dangerous clients. Ethical and legal standards guide counselors in their treatment of such clients. Breaching confidentiality is rarely necessary. Counselors should understand their ethical codes and their state statutes.  相似文献

Asian international and native born Caucasian students indicated the source of help they would go to first if they had a personal problem; rated the importance of four counselor characteristics: ethnicity, university degree, age, and gender; and completed Fischer and Turner's scale of attitudes about seeking professional psychological help. There was no difference between Asian and Caucasian Students in the sources of help they would seek. Asian students indicated it was more important that a conselor be or similar ethnicity and older. There were no ethnic differences in attitudes toward professional help. Women were no ethnic differences in attituses toward professional help. Women were more likely to report indicate a need for help regardless of ethnic group. Caucasian women were more tolerant of the stigma of being a client, likely to report interpersonal openness, and to express confidence in mental health practitioners than Asian women or men form either group. Colleges should consider the use of older paraprofessional counselors of the same nationality as interantional student clients.  相似文献

This study investigated unique and shared effects of social support and cultural orientation on mental health indicators (depressive and anxiety symptoms, stress, and life satisfaction) of 896 college students. Results indicated that perceived social support predicted mental health variables and that cultural orientation variables (independent and interdependent self‐construal) moderated this association. Conclusions and counseling implications for university counselors are discussed on the basis of cultural orientation theory.  相似文献

In working with Vietnamese American refugees the mental health worker needs to be knowledgable of and sensitive to several areas: (1) the cultural history and history of the migration experience of the group; (2) the group's mental health dispositions; (3) cultural and systemic biases affecting counseling; and (4) the role of paraprofessionals. Some of the cultural factors affecting the utilization of mental health services are saving face, stoicism, respect for authority and discrimination which may cause them to seek help only at advanced stages of illness.Mental health counseling in the United States has run into some difficulty in serving the refugees as it has been mainly a white middle class profession that has focused on the individual which can be considered culturally biased when dealing with family centered Vietnamese Americans. For the reasons previously stated, in addition to language difficulties and cultural differences, many agencies employ indigenous paraprofessionals. While it is beneficial there are also problems to be considered.Recommendations for addressing these problems include: (1) the development of a community education and prevention program by actively involving ethnic community leaders in the planning process; (2) supporting ethnic community leaders; (3) training indigenous paraprofessionals about the mental health care system; (4) providing mental health services through medical care facilities; and (5) focusing on family therapy as oppossed to individual therapy.Prepared for presentation at the International Round Table for the Advancement of Counselling, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, July 15–19, 1985.  相似文献

This study explored 1st‐generation students' sense of belonging, mental health status, and use of mental health services in comparison to non‐1st‐generation students. Using the Student Experience in the Research University multi‐institutional survey, the authors found that 1st‐generation students tended to report lower ratings of belonging, greater levels of depression/stress, and lower use of services compared to non‐1st‐generation students. Implications for college counselors and suggestions for future inquiry are provided.  相似文献

Although the idea of primary prevention has become prevalent in the literature of the helping professions, actual services in this area have lagged behind. If counselors can develop the special skills needed to carry out primary prevention strategies, they may be effective in helping their clients find and maintain personal and environmental resources that they need to ward off problems. Primary prevention skills include educational skills, program development skills, and change agent skills, all of which can be learned in the context of master's level education or in-service training. Mention the words “primary prevention” in mental health circles these days and you're a hero!  相似文献

The roles and responsibilities of community college counselors have altered over the last 40 years as a result of profound social, cultural, economic, and political changes. A compounding factor is the dramatic demographic shifts that have occurred across the United States. Although academic and career-related issues traditionally have been the cornerstones of the work of community college counselors, this too is changing. Reports of the escalating frequency and severity of mental health concerns of community college students have prompted counselors to increasingly emphasize personal counseling. This article summarizes some personal issues that counselors are now likely to encounter with community college students. Recommendations for community college counselors working with students experiencing personal difficulties are also included.  相似文献

Given their societal toll and ubiquitous nature, counselors and other mental health professionals inevitably will encounter clients who have experienced racial microaggressions in their practice. In this primer, we examine key issues relative to racial microaggressions and their impact on the lives of members of racial and ethnic minority groups. Drawing on burgeoning research, we also address likely coping strategies. Finally, we offer implications for mental health training and counseling practice. Throughout, we highlight the evident resilience of racial and ethnic minority individuals in the context of racial microaggressions.  相似文献

At a time when the courts are increasingly called on to settle disputes, the mental health profession finds itself vulnerable to litigation under legal doctrines that were previously limited to the medical establishment. The possibility of being sued by a client is not limited to individual practitioners. Counseling supervisors and administrators in counseling centers are likely to be named co-defendents. This likelihood is reinforced by recent decisions that have held counselors, supervisors, counseling centers, and sponsoring institutions responsible for the public threat posed by clients. This article describes elementary principles of law involving supervisors and counselors and explores the ramifications of these doctrines in reference to “the duty to warn.” Suggestions for avoiding litigation are also offered.  相似文献

The present study examined whether mental health stigma (i.e., negative attitudes toward people with a psychological disorder) and self-concealment are unique predictors of help-seeking attitudes in Asian American and European American college students with no history of seeking professional psychological services. The Asian American group had less favorable help-seeking attitudes overall, lower levels of stigma tolerance and interpersonal openness, greater mental health stigma, and greater self-concealment than the European American group. Mental health stigma and self-concealment were unique predictors of help-seeking attitudes overall in both groups. However, mental health stigma was not a unique predictor of recognition of need for psychotherapeutic help and confidence in mental health practitioners, the components of help-seeking attitudes theorized to be most associated with actual help-seeking behavior. Self-concealment was a unique predictor of confidence in mental health practitioners in the Asian American group, but not in the European American group.  相似文献

Summary Career counseling cannot be neatly separated from the counseling that affects the remainder of clients' lives, and mental distress cannot be considered independent of the career which encompasses so much of an individual's world. Life is complex and includes many facets which counselees bring to the counseling relationship. Counselors must be able to deal with the major issues in clients' lives including career issues and issues of mental health. Minimum skill for counselors would include the ability to assist a range of clients and the knowledge to effectively refer others. For too long career counseling and mental health counseling have been viewed as separate entities. This view of career and mental health counseling as separate is inconsistent with the development of counseling as a profession and does not serve potential clients well.Spencer G. Despite decades of research on racial disproportionality in special education, the underrepresentation of Asian Americans in services tends to be overlooked in policy and practice. Underrepresentation, however, raises the possibility of similar concerns about misidentification, bias, and racial inequality within schools as overrepresentation. Yet, little is known about the scope and magnitude of underrepresentation for Asian Americans in special education. National and state-level data are helpful in documenting trends but tend to ignore the wide variation in Asian American representation across local areas. This study assesses Asian American underrepresentation in special education across all school districts in California and explores district-level factors that may predict these disparities. The results show that while Asian Americans are underrepresented in special education in nearly all districts, the disparities are greater in those with larger Asian American populations. In the case of autism, however, Asian Americans are overrepresented in most districts. A consistent predictor of these disparities is the racial composition of the teaching staff. Overall, the study shows that national data can underestimate the extent of Asian American underrepresentation in special education and calls attention to Asian American students who may be overlooked for needed services.  相似文献

Drawing on the experiences of a Mental Health Counselor trainee in the Anti-Torture and Mental Health Unit of the Legal and Psychosocial Department of the Refugee Law Project in Kampala, Uganda, this article provides an overview of the refugee population and services in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically in East Africa. Using case examples, this paper highlights the challenges of and opportunities for providing effective mental health services to this population within this context, while reflecting on the first author’s experience. The article concludes with considerations for ethical and culturally competent practices for mental health counselors in the early stage of their professional careers who are new to the field of human rights and social justice.  相似文献

This paper examines the responsibilities of mental health professionals, particularly counselors, to those who identify or might be identifiable as “transgendered.” There are two main objectives. The first is to describe the critical reflection necessary to deal with gender-variant clients in an ethical and effective manner. The second is to discuss a psychotherapeutic model that is likely to be effective in integrating such reflection into the clinical process, and to make counseling recommendations on that basis.  相似文献
