A new study shows that large amounts of vitamins and minerals can slow the loss of sight linked to aging. The condition is called age related macular degeneration (衰退) or A-M-D. The disease is a major cause of blindness among old people. Doctors do not know what causes it. EAP refers to the language and associated skills that students need to undertake study in higher education through the medium of English. EAP is a branch of ESP * in that the teaching content is matched to the learners requirements (Robinson, 1991, pp. 2-5): EAP is goal directed - students learn Enligsh because they need it. EAP courses are based on needs analyses - which specify clearly what students have to do in English (but see: Benesch, 2001). Most EAP courses are fixed term - short presessional courses are fixed term - short presessional courses or longer foundation courses - in preparation for academic courses. This study provides a glimpse into understanding the potential benefits as well as harm of playing video games from the perspective of six Malaysian secondary school students, aged 16-17 years old. The rationale of the study is to enable parents, educators, administrators and policy makers to develop a sound understanding on the impact of playing video games before making any judgment on the contemporary youth culture. Thus, further decision on the acceptance of video games as a new innovation in school or at home could be considered. Although this study is not very extensive, the findings suggest that playing video games contributes to cognitive, social, motivational and emotional development. However, potential harms do exist. Parents play an important role in guiding their children either directly or indirectly, as indicated by the respective students. Caution is advised in the interpretation of the study＇s findings as it is solely based on the perspectives of the students, as the first person＇s views. Nevertheless, each student has their very own perspective on the impact of video games on them. 相似文献

With the world globalization, China’s communication with other countries has become more frequent. The term "soft power" is coined by a noted American scholar Joseph Nye. It means a nation’s ability to get others to do what it wants without either coercive military or economic pressures, or material inducements. It is the attractiveness and seduction, the resources of which include culture, values, political ideas and policies. During the past two decades, the soft power concept has gained widespread acceptance and usage. In a global information age and in a multi-polarized world, the US government has all along attached much importance to the exercise of soft power in foreign policies. It goes to great lengths to advance its universal culture and values, promote public diplomacy, and shape the world order by helping establish the international institutions and norms. The US government draws on the resources of soft power to improve the national image and thus promote its popularity across the world with a view to serving the national interests. The idea of soft power improves the traditional concept of power, enriches the practice of the US diplomacy. However, we shouldn’t fail to see that it is based on US superiority with the ultimate goal of achieving US hegemony. The aim of this paper is to determine the elements which hinder peace, and emphasize the importance of the contribution of foreign language learning to international peace. Language affects the thought and behavior of human beings. The attitude of a person knowing more than one language of a position is not the same as a person not knowing a foreign language because of that the first person can comment about the position in different standpoints. He can see and evaluate the events in a much broader perspective. As knowledge gives comfort, peace and confidence to the human beings, ignorance causes repulse and revulsion. Knowing a foreign language means entering a world of human beings thinking and believing differently, accepting different life-styles, illuminating, clarifying the obscurities which cause prejudice and revealing human behaviors which seem not comprehensible whereas they are actually very easy to understand. A theory can be developed from all explanations emphasizing the contributions of knowing a foreign language to the international communication. The theory is called ＂push and pull theory in communication＂. The huge building of ignorance, which is the place of big wars and conflicts, can be eliminated through the power of love and peace language. To obtain international peace, all the nations in the world should try to maintain and create legal and social background in order to realize their common goal ＂international peace＂. All the governments should come together and develop a common program which provides a contribution to the improvement of the international peace language, which should be taught as a lesson called ＂common peace language＂ in all countries. Foreign language teaching should be started at the very early stage if possible. The children＇s books must contain differences that are natural but not the things to be ashamed of or things to boast about.
