Sex and gender have been confusingly categorised by many scholars.Sex refers to biological characteristics;gender, can also be influenced by biology but does not determined by it.Unlike sex, which is determined by nature at birth, gender is a social construct specifying the culturally prescribed roles that men and women are to follow and represent. In order to argue that gender attaches to culture and that gender identity is shaped socially and culturally, this essay analyses Jane Campion’s The Piano from three perspectives.Firstly, the essay will examine the way people in the film represent their gender characters through three repeatedly demonstrated narrative motifs, clothing, the axe and the piano,to illustrate that gender is performative and that cultural gender identities advocate specific performances in terms of behaviour,speech,views,etc.(Butler,2011).Then,through an analysis of the different gazes of the characters in the film, the essay indicates that social and cultural interaction between the genders can go beyond and blur the boundaries of the stereotypical categories of male and female. In the third section, the essay will argue that social rules and discourse also play a prominent role in shaping people’s gender,by discussing how the characters represent and re-define their gender identity under the pressure of the patriarchal society they inhabit.  相似文献

Social conventions sometimes are regarded as valuable treasure in some culture. But it can also lead to human tragedy. The Arti cle here tried to look into the social and religious conventions behind the human tragedy in Richard Jefferies’ short story "the Acorn Gath erer" and how those conventions and people’s belief affect the relationship between the grandmother and her grandson in the short story. The article discussed the underlying causes to the tragedy from three aspects, the outside pressure, the inner factors and the problem of the society. It attempted to explain how the social pressure influenced the attitude and action of the grandmother, how her inner belief com pelled herself to maltreat the boy and how the social convention and religious belief made the society seemingly pitiless and indifferent. It is also indicated that social and religious conventions still have a lasting effect on how people think and act in today’s world.  相似文献

Language is used to exchange information, but it means far more than that.It is also employed to establish and maintain social relationships.Language has varieties.Only by acquiring the variety of language a speech community adopts can a person be accepted and establish a target social identity. The movie My Fair Lady is a good illustration to this point, and Eliza’s experiences of transforming from a poor flower girl to a charming"princess"are cited in this paper. Both linguistic features like phonology, grammar, syntax and lexicon, and paralinguistic characteristics like pitch, volume, intonation, manners and topics will altogether contribute to the construction of a social identity. The ultimate goal is to cultivate people’s awareness of social identity and be conscious to speak.  相似文献

The use of language is one of the most important ways for us to build up our social identity and shape other people’s view of who we are. This intimate connection between language and social identity means that learners need the chances to build social identities and explore diversity of the language. This, however, poses a great chal enge to the educational systems and to norms of classroom teaching, which only provide an idealized (and reductionism) view of language. In this paper, I wil first discuss the relationship between language and social identity, and then discuss how this intimate connection should affect our English language teaching.  相似文献

A good teacher is often depicted by virtue of certain isolated competencies, such as knowledge, skills and attitudes. Teachers' identity and their spiritual and emotional integrity are often ignored. This paper reports a qualitative study of the professional identity of an English teacher in a middle school to understand the identity and ex-pertise of a beloved teacher. Through interviews and classroom observation, the study reveals (1) that the teacher who owns a more advanced diploma or profes- sional certificate but confines himself/herself to transmitting only formal knowledge is not well received by his/her students, and (2) that the teacher who is appreci- ated by his/her students teaches with heart and integrity of identity, and possesses a capacity for connectedness among his/her personal experience, subject, social context and students' needs. The study triggers some implications for pre-service teacher education in China. The authors argue that teacher education programs must concern themselves with nourishing persons rather than technicians who are merely equipped with competencies.  相似文献

All human relationships are constructed and defined by the relative power of the interacting persons. Women, most often than not have been defined in all spheres of life in terms of their relationships with men. Most literary texts written by men over the years have tended to give women subordinate roles. A new trend however seems to have emerged with the appearance of women writers on the scene. These writers have sought to reconstruct these negative stereotypes by redefining the role of the woman in the light of current global and contemporary trends. This article sought to examine how Doris Lessing in her Golden Notebook has given voice to feminist concerns through her major protagonist:Anna Wulf. The article specifically looks at how Anna challenges patriarchal conventions and choose to express herself through writing initially considered to be the sole preserve of men. The article used the feminist literary theory as the main instrument for analysis.  相似文献

Thomas Hardy is an outstanding novelist in the nineteenth century. He has produced numerous works including novels and poetry. His tragic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles has a great impact on the world literature. The paper is focused on the exploration of Tess’s tragedy through her life experiences.Tess’s tragedy can be illustrated by three factors—her family aspects, love experiences and her social images, which also contribute collectively to poor Tess’s destiny. The social background of the period provides a basis for the novel, and the deformed social values and morality is the root of her tragedy, together with her personal temperament and the Christian religious influences.Christian mores of self-sacrifice,wide love and purity have a great effect on characters in the novel. In the fourth part, there is some enlightenment from Tess’s tragedy. It is believed that women play a crucial role in society.Tess is a woman with good qualities and her experiences give a warning to women today:the proper treatment of one’s behaviors and the social rules is critical.  相似文献

When examined carefully, it is seen that there is not an available and detailed cttrriculum designed for the aim of foreign language teaching with integrated cultural items of the target language in the programs of the schools under authority of the Ministry of Education and Turkish higher education institutions. In recent years, the specialists have an agreement on the issue that foreign language instruction should be carried out by the means of target language's history, literature, geography and also its social characteristics. The idiom "it's raining cats and dogs" can be misinterpreted by a Turkish student without the knowledge of this idiom's story in English history as "Cats and dogs are pouring down from the sky". An important French architectural building "Saint Mary Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris" can be misunderstood as "Our Parisian Woman" by a student who is unfamiliar with French culture. Both examples show that encountered foreign words and phrases can be misunderstood and mostly these words are perceived and interpreted according to learners' own cultural figures. The aims of this study are to show the significance of culture-based foreign language courses and to make a contribution to the literature by regarding the views of researchers beheving that culture and language are inseparable concepts. In this context, Erzincan University French Language Teaching Department students' opinions on the relation between culture and language learning were received with the application of qualitative structured written response method. Then, document analysis of written comments was evaluated. Consequently, the analysis on the participants' written comments showed that a culture integrated foreign language course can make positive contributions to students' learning, language learning process and learning environment.  相似文献
