T.S Elliot’s the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is just Prufrock’s inner monologue revealing that he was ripped apart by the struggle within him between his sense and his sensibility. According the analysis of the whole song, we can find that the speaker is a vacillating person, his character leads to his tragedy. His hesitation brings him the deepest misery and suffering.  相似文献

Kate Chopin’s (1899- ) The Awakening gives an account of Edna Pontellie’s awakening in soul and body and sing highly of her courage to pursue freedom and independence. But in a patriarchal society, women can only exist subordinate to men and any woman’s rebellion is to be defeated. Through a detailed analysis of the process of Edna’s awakening, it argues that Edna is not awakened but disillusioned, and she still lives under the heavy patriarchal shackles.  相似文献

There are many different views among scholars about the motif of Hawthome’s "Red Cross".In my opinion, the most meaningful view is from an American critic. He said that "Red Cross" is a novel describing the divergence between natural man and social man.As my part, this divergence can be understood on two levels. The first is the conflict between thongs of people represent the benefits of natural man and the other throngs of people represent the social man’s benefits;the second is the conflict of natural character and social character in everybody’s soul. The author tried to make those two conflicts to a certain agreement, and ended with a concordant state. Then who win? Who fail?  相似文献

The Scarlet Letter is a tragedy itself.Dimmesdale, the number one hero in the tragedy,is doomed to be a tragic character. He commits adultery with Hester, which should be punished by law.But because of his cowardice and selfishness and Hester’ protection,he escaped from the punishment of the law.Because he is selfish, cowardly, hypocitical, and lonely,he has hidden his sin for seven years. And because he is kind,he finally stands up actively and takes the responsibility, which belongs to him.At that time,he dies an honest true man.Through the analysis of Dimmesdale’ s characteristics,we can know his inner world, and we will be more sympathetic to him.  相似文献

On the perspective of psychoanalytic criticism, three human psyche models propounded by Freud,Jung and Lancan were employed to reveal the psychological trace of the tragic character, the grandmother in The Acorn-gatherer.Back to the country life in late Victorian England,a lonely elderly widow had to bring up her illegitimate grandson, but her grandson couldn’t bear her mistreatment, left home and died accidentally. The old grandmother bore the hardship strenuously but had to live her old and ailing days lonely which is like a candle guttering in the wind.Deluged with the social discrimination and bias led by the collective unconscious, her help doesn’t come from anyone in the utilitarian oriented grass roots.Nor does it come from the Lord’s real redemption owing to a country woman’s limited knowledge and inwardness.Under the great strain from the grey society, she was gradually distorted mentally. As a result, she was victimized by the grey tide of the society but she herself was a victimizing force to her grandson. The psychological exploration of the piteous victim can thoroughly interpret the author’s implication,i.e.condemning the evils of the society and man’s wicked nature.  相似文献

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning, yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original, but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later, based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary, just like the fragments of a vessel, responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.  相似文献

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle. He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle. In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about, then he can omit the things he knows, and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water."Here, one eighth refers to the information given by the author, and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth. The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle. This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story. With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.  相似文献

Jude the Obscure was Thomas Hardy’s last novel creation, and he spent eight year from preparation to publication.Although this novel received a lot of criticisms instead of praises when it came out,it also can be considered as Thomas Hardy’s classical works. The theme of this novel is so brave to explore the existing women’s living circumstances in that time. With the industrial revolution in England, new thoughts and ideas sprang out.Women were no longer belonging to husband and family, and they began to be aware of their social roles and reconsider their identity in society and marriage. The aim of the paper is to analyze this novel from the feministic perspective and re-read the character of Sue Bridehead in the light of the theory"the girl of the period".  相似文献
