Young children’s emotional competence—regulation of emotional expressiveness and experience when necessary, and knowledge
of their own and other’s emotions—is crucial for social and academic (i.e., school) success. Thus, it is important to understand
the mechanisms of how young children develop emotional competence. Both parents and teachers are considered as important socializers
of emotion, providing children experiences that promote or deter the development of emotional competence. However, compared
to parents, early childhood teachers’ roles in socializing young children’s emotional competence have not been examined. Based
on the findings from research on parental socialization of emotion, in this theoretical review we explore possible teacher
roles in the development of young children’s emotional competence. Additionally, we suggest future research focusing on early
childhood teacher socialization of emotion, and discuss theoretical and practical benefits of such research. 相似文献

This study examines how teachers’ use of affective strategies (voice intonation, dramatization, personal involvement comments)
during the reading and discussion of books influence young children’s affective reactions (dramatization, personal engagement,
language play comments). Twenty kindergarten teachers read four books, two fiction and two information ones (narrative/expository
text).
We found significant differences in both teachers’ affective presentation and young children’s affective reactions between
fiction and information books, between the two fiction books but not between the narrative and expository text. A strong bi-directional
relationship was found between teachers’ affective presentation of stories and young children’s affective reactions. In particular,
teachers’ personal involvement comments prompted children’s personal engagement reactions, teachers’ reenactment was followed
by children’s imitations of such reenactments and teachers’ voice intonation elicited children’s personal engagement comments.
On the other hand, children’s use of paralinguistic cues and personal engagement comments reinforced teachers’ use of voice
intonation and personal involvement comments. Finally, text features, such as rhyming, were followed by children’s language
play. 相似文献

This paper examines Korean mothers’ roles in the socialization of their adolescent children. First, the issue is analyzed
through a historical approach that takes into account the Confucian background of Korean family life. Secondly, we consider
concepts and results from recent studies on mothers’ attitudes, parenting styles, and adolescent socialization. Some of the
arguments and data are particularly relevant to middle class mothers. We point out that the Confucian influence remains strong
in modern South Korea while at the same time mothers responsibilities in parenting and socialization have increased. As a
consequence, the relationship between mothers and their adolescent children has become more complex, intense, and unstable.
We conclude that the balancing of autonomy and relatedness is the most important developmental task facing mothers and their
children.

This study investigated the relationship between children’s ability to regulate emotions and display of appropriate behavior
in social settings. A sample of 33 children representing a wide range of social economic status was randomly selected from
a Head Start Program and an Early Childhood Development Center in the Midwest. Data were collected using the Emotion Regulation
Checklist (ERC) developed by Shields and Cicchetti (Dev Psychol 33:906–916, 1997, J Clin child Psychol, 27:231–395, 1998). A “Behavior Recording” checklist was developed and used to record appropriate and inappropriate behavior observed during
children social interactions. Teacher ratings identified children as generally high emotion regulators. Girls had generally
higher scores than boys in emotion regulation ability. A high relationship (r = .76) was also found between emotion regulation and display of appropriate behavior. Results indicate the importance of
emotions in relation to a child’s well being and academic achievement. Additionally, these findings suggest a need for parents
and early childhood educators to teach children appropriate emotional behavior when confronted with situations that are in
conflict with societal norms. 相似文献

This study was conducted in a Reggio inspired child care classroom of 4-year olds where the fundamental principles of Reggio
Emilia preschools are interpreted for a Canadian context. Qualitative case study methodology was employed to investigate how
social interaction plays a role in young children’s learning processes. Drawing on social constructivist views of children’s
learning and socialization, children’s discussions and interactions within a preschool learning group were examined. Examination
of children’s discourse is valuable not only for understanding individual and group learning experiences but also for illuminating
children’s agency and their active roles in their own learning. The study focused on the in-depth study of six children’s
activities during a ‘Shades of Pink’ project. As the project, ‘Shades of Pink’ unfolded, the children faced cognitive conflict while they were talking about the details of Monet’s painting, but worked
toward building common understandings. In this study, children are considered to be meaning makers and active participants
in their own learning processes. In addition, the relationships between children became a context in which the co-construction
of theories, interpretations and various understandings of reality took place. Small group work became a basis for creating
unity, a space in which thoughts took shape as well as a way to compare interpretations; with the result that new thoughts
and meanings were produced. 相似文献

A commonly accepted belief is that the violence depicted in television programs, particularly cartoons, has a negative impact
on young children’s behavior. However, young children may be less inclined to emulate violent actions seen on television than
currently thought. Research indicates that young children have limited comprehension of television content but relatively
sophisticated moral reasoning. Children’s understanding of the immorality of violence on television and the distinction between
reality and make-believe may mediate these effects, as may the comic aspect of cartoons they view. We review current research
concerning the effects of cartoon violence on children’s moral understanding and behavior to with the goal of helping early
childhood educators and parents make informed decisions about children’s television viewing. 相似文献

Atom Surprise: Using Theatre in Primary Science Education 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Early exposure to science may have a lifelong effect on children’s attitudes towards science and their motivation to learn
science in later life. Out-of-class environments can play a significant role in creating favourable attitudes, while contributing
to conceptual learning. Educational science theatre is one form of an out-of-class environment, which has received little
research attention. This study aims to describe affective and cognitive learning outcomes of watching such a play and to point
to connections between theatrical elements and specific outcomes. “Atom Surprise” is a play portraying several concepts on
the topic of matter. A mixed methods approach was adopted to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of children (grades 1–6)
from two different school settings who watched the play. Data were gathered using questionnaires and in-depth interviews.
Analysis suggested that in both schools children’s knowledge on the topic of matter increased after the play with younger
children gaining more conceptual knowledge than their older peers. In the public school girls showed greater gains in conceptual
knowledge than boys. No significant changes in students’ general attitudes towards science were found, however, students demonstrated
positive changes towards science learning. Theatrical elements that seemed to be important in children’s recollection of the
play were the narrative, props and stage effects, and characters. In the children’s memory, science was intertwined with the
theatrical elements. Nonetheless, children could distinguish well between scientific facts and the fictive narrative. 相似文献

This article describes an integrated art and early literacy project entitled, ‘Picture Partners’. The main purpose of the
project was to explore how young children create and express meaning through art. Children’s responses, both written and spoken,
were included because accompanying modes of expression expand the nature and content of their drawings and inform teachers
about children’s intentions and processes of thinking. A secondary purpose was to investigate how children use illustrations
from familiar picture books as models for their own creations and whether children’s responses to stories might be enhanced
through their collaboration with peers. Partnerships were formed and participants worked in close proximity as they drew pictures
in response to a teacher directed prompt. Using qualitative, interpretative analysis, a small subset of drawings produced
by kindergarten and first grade children was examined. The results revealed that the process of drawing was influenced by
illustrations in picturebooks, peer interactions, and the artwork of partners in close proximity. The shift in emphasis away
from the interpretations of visual realism in children’s drawings towards their own purposes allowed readers to focus on the
way drawings represent meaning within children’s socio-cultural worlds. 相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between family factors and students’ scientific literacy performance in Hong Kong,
which has excelled in science performance in previous international studies. Data were obtained from the 2006 Programme for
International Student Assessment. Multilevel analysis was used to examine the relationship between parental involvement and
investment and students’ scientific literacy performance. It was found that students’ scientific literacy performance, which
was measured by their science achievement and self-efficacy towards science, were significantly associated with certain types
of parental investment and involvement even after controlling background factors of both students and schools. Parental investment
in cultural resources and parental involvement in terms of organising science learning enrichment activities at an early age
were found to be significantly associated with students’ scientific literacy performance. Activities that could be provided
at an early age (e.g. watching TV programmes about science, reading books on scientific discovery, watching, reading or listening
to science fictions) were found to be highly effective activities for promoting children’s science achievement and self-efficacy. 相似文献

This study investigated linkages between aspects of emotional competence and preschoolers' social skills with peers. Whether parental emotion socialization practices contributed to the prediction of social skill once emotional competence was statistically controlled was also of interest. Eighty-one predominantly Caucasian preschoolers were videotaped as they participated in three same-sex triadic peer situations. Four peer variables were coded from the videotapes: social initiations, the frequency with which children were the targets of positive social bids, non-constructive anger-related reactions, and prosocial acts. The emotional competence measures included situation knowledge, children's explanations of emotions, positivity of emotional expression during peer play, and emotional intensity. Maternal anger directed at the child was the measure of emotion socialization. Results revealed that the emotional competence variables were meaningfully related to the peer variables and that, for non-constructive anger reactions, maternal reports of anger explained unique variance. Results are discussed in terms of how emotional competence and emotion socialization contribute to peer behavior and the importance of designing and implementing affective intervention programs for young children and their families. 相似文献

This case study was designed to describe how an effective English-speaking prekindergarten teacher develops strategies for
communicating with and teaching young English language learners. The teacher’s classroom practices to enhance her own relationship
with the children promoted opportunities for the Latino children to become full participants in the classroom community. At
the end of the year, the Latino children showed progress in formal and informal measures of receptive vocabulary in both English
and Spanish. Findings from the study suggest the importance of the affective and social nature of second language learning
in young children. Implications for practice and research are discussed. 相似文献

In recent times there has been an enormous interest in Vygotsky’s writing on conceptual development, particularly his insights
on the differences between everyday and scientific thinking. In drawing upon cultural–historical theory, this paper seeks
to examine the relations between everyday concepts and scientific concepts within playful contexts, such as preschools, with
a view to better understanding how very young children develop conceptual understandings in science. This paper presents an
overview of a study which sought to map the transformation and appropriation of scientific concepts within two early childhood
settings. Approximately ten weeks of data gathering took place, with video recordings, field notes, photographic documentation,
and child and teacher interviews for recording child concept formation within these naturalistic settings. The findings indicate
that when teacher programs are more oriented towards concepts rather than materials, children’s play is focused on conceptual
connections. Importantly, the study showed that: It was possible to map the multiple and dynamic levels or stratas of thinking
that a child or group of children may exhibit within play-based contexts; An analysis of ‘unorganised heaps’ and ‘complexive
thinking’ evident in conceptually or materially oriented play-based programs can be determined; the dialectical relations
between everyday concepts and scientific concepts in play-based programs can be understood; and greater understanding about
the nature of concept formation in situated playful contexts have been possible. 相似文献

As the number of young children displaying challenging behavior in early childhood grows, so too does the need to implement
evidence-based practices that prevent challenging behavior. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) provides a framework of tiered
interventions focused on promoting social-emotional development and preventing challenging behavior. This study investigated
the effects of consultation on teachers’ implementation of universal PBS practices and children’s academic engagement. A multiple-baseline
design was applied across four preschool classrooms serving children from 33 to 63 months of age. A strong relationship was
documented between consultation and teachers’ implementation of PBS skills. High levels of academic engagement were maintained
following consultation. Implications of the results are provided for applications of universal PBS practices in early childhood
settings. 相似文献

Social-emotional learning in early childhood sets the stage for students’ future behaviors in schools. The current study examined
the effects of a social-emotional skills curriculum on the behavior of students in an early childhood program. The children
received instruction in social and emotional skills using the Connecting with Others: Lessons for Teaching Social and Emotional Competence program. Pre-test and post-test scores for the BASC-2 Rating Scale and the Connecting with Others Rating Scale were used
to determine if the children demonstrated progress in their behaviors by the end of the intervention. The results indicated
that the social skills curriculum Connecting with Others: Lessons for Teaching Social and Emotional Competence was associated with positive changes in the children’s behaviors. 相似文献

This study focuses on mothers’ and young children’s everyday social experience by analyzing their social relationships, social
support in child care, mother-child interaction, and mothers’ evaluations of all these aspects. Three hundred and eighty-four
mothers with a child aged between I and 3 years, living in a city in Central Italy, were interviewed. A Principal Components
Analysis was performed on items concerning mothers’ and children’s social experience and mothers’ evaluations. Four PCA generated
factors were regressed on the mother’s and Four PCA generated factors were regressed on the mother’s and child’s characteristics.
Results show that, even in a context characterized by social conditions supportive to mothering, there is a comparatively
widespread desire for social interaction with other mothers and children. A stress related to intensive mothering was found
in a minority of the mothers and was predicted by the mothers’ continuous commitment in child care during the whole day. Results
are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that social contacts with other mothers may have a mitigating effect on mothers’
stress. One implication is that early educational services that provide the opportunity for social intercourse among parents
can be an important resource for them. 相似文献

Research Findings: We examined relations of effortful control with parent emotion socialization practices and child social behavior using a person-centered approach in children ages 18 months to 5 years. A total of 76 parents (66 mothers, 10 fathers) completed questionnaires at screening and 6-month follow-up. There were no age differences in change in effortful control. K-means cluster analysis identified 2 clusters for parent emotion socialization: low-involvement parents (lower levels on emotion coaching/dismissing and positive/negative expressivity) and high-involvement parents (higher levels on all such practices). Parent socialization profile was indirectly associated with children's positive social behaviors through children's change in effortful control. These associations did not extend to aggressive behavior. Children with parents who actively engage in a variety of emotion socialization practices may increase more in regulatory capacities and engage in more positive social behavior. Practice or Policy: The present study suggests the importance of using a variety of socialization strategies with young children to foster adaptive regulatory and social behaviors. 相似文献

To achieve the overall goals and purposes of education is closely related to the living environments of students. Different
family backgrounds will put children into a situation where they face unfair competition. According to a survey conducted
in China’s Urumqi and Changchun about parents’ awareness of educating their children, this paper will suggest that families
with different backgrounds have different expectations for their children’s education. Moreover, it suggests that parents’
social status is related to their children’s education expectations. Therefore, we can find that parents’ social status influences
their children’s education, and their positions in social class are related to education.

Research Findings: Prior research with older urban children indicates that a disadvantaged neighborhood context is associated with poorer early development, including poorer verbal ability, reading recognition, and achievement scores among children. Neighborhood disadvantage in rural communities and at younger age levels may also be related to development; however, this relationship has received little examination. In this study we utilized data from the Family Life Project, a representative sample of babies born to mothers in poor rural counties in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, to address questions related to the relationship between neighborhood context (disadvantage and safety) and children's early language development. We examined the mediation of this relationship by child care quality. We also examined geographic isolation and collective socialization as moderators of the relationship between neighborhood context and child care quality. Results indicated that although neighborhood disadvantage did not predict children's development or child care quality, neighborhood safety predicted children's receptive language, with child care quality a partial mediator of this relationship. Collective socialization but not geographic isolation moderated the relationship between neighborhood safety and child care quality. Practice or Policy: Implications for policy, practice, and future research are discussed, including improving community safety through community policing, neighborhood watch, and social networks and increasing access to quality child care. 相似文献

This study examines what a Korean heritage language school means to Korean immigrant families and their children, considering
Korean immigrant mothers’ perspectives on American early schooling. As part of an ethnographic research project on Korean-American
children’s peer culture in a heritage school, seven mothers, two guardians (grandmothers), and their young children were observed
and interviewed during one academic year. The analysis showed that the heritage language school functions as a social and
emotional support system, a buffer for reducing the detachment from parents, and a safety net for the Korean-American children’s
challenging lives. The Korean immigrant mothers also showed that they felt burdened by different cultural views of their children’s
behaviors, and described how their children were often considered problematic. The social and culture barriers caused by their
immigrant status profoundly influenced their reasons for sending their children to a Korean heritage language school. This
study suggests that teachers’ deep understanding of culturally different perspectives on children’s behaviors, along with
systematic social and emotional support, can help these children attain psychological well-being. 相似文献
