SUMMARY

Archive repository web pages have become more sophisticated in the past several years, and information about repository holdings is often readily available online. However, so long as full archival records are not available electronically, archivists will have to contend with the increase in reference requests from remote users. The author surveyed one hundred university archives web pages to examine the current availability of archival records on the Web and to explore the possible effects of this presence on archivists' efforts to provide remote users with access to repository holdings through “ask an archivist” forms, electronic mail, and other modes of communication.  相似文献

Summary

I describe a set of automated archives for electronic communication of research information that have been operational in many fields of physics, and some related and unrelated disciplines, starting from 1991. These archives now serve over 35,000 users worldwide from over 70 countries, and process more than 70,000 electronic transactions per day. In some fields of physics, they have already supplanted traditional research journals as conveyers of both topical and archival research information. Many of the lessons learned from these systems should carry over to other fields of scholarly publication, i.e., those wherein authors are writing not for direct financial remuneration in the form of royalties, but rather primarily to communicate information (for the advancement of knowledge, with attendant benefits to their careers and professional reputations). These archives have in addition proven equally indispensable to researchers in less-developed countries.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This article examines the evolution of a national register of the archives of science and technology in Australia and the related development of an archival informatics focused initially on people and their relationships to archival materials. The register was created in 1985 as an in-house tool for the Australian Science Archives Project of the University of Melbourne. Its potential as a public reference guide for historians of science and technology soon became apparent. The story of the computerisation and publication of the register provides the background for the examination of the use of archival authority records as a means of finding better ways of connecting archives with their potential users. The success of this approach led to demands from the community for a generic database tool using a framework based on the authoritative entities associated with archival materials-an activity that we started to call contextual information management. The Online Heritage Resource Manager (OHRM) was created in response to these calls, and the story of its development as a tool for mapping networks of contextual information is told in the latter part of the article.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

As more archival metadata and archival records become available online, providing effective interfaces to those materials is increasingly important to give users access. This article describes five approaches from the hypertext and visualization research communities which can be used to improve such access: (1) navigating hierarchical structures, (2) illustrating networks of relationships, (3) viewing organizational processes, (4) using time and space as organizing structures, and (5) spatializing arguments and discussions. This article addresses particular challenges in applying these visualization techniques to archival records and considers novel challenges introduced by them for both archival organization and for visualization research.  相似文献

Abstract

The decade that has passed since the last time The Reference Librarian looked at archival reference has seen many changes for the archival profession. While the techniques and procedures of reference service have not changed dramatically, a certain level of standardization has been reached. Access and outreach remain their traditional ties to reference; as archivists have become less willing to accept access restrictions, recent copyright decisions have tended towards limiting the use of archival material. Research in reference, in users and in use has increased, although not as much as some would prefer; it has also been affected by debate over the archival mission. The increasing pace of automation has provided new delivery mechanisms and opportunities for access and outreach while at the same time it has called into question some of the basic tenets of the archival profession. New approaches have been proposed for reference in the digital environment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The article reports the results of a usability study of an EAD interface. Findings indicate that subjects had trouble understanding archival terminology and how best to search for information in finding aids. Furthermore, they were not familiar with the structure or contents of finding aids. In addition to building interfaces that minimize archival jargon and rely heavily on users' prior understanding of hierarchical finding aids, this study indicates that users require new forms of virtual reference assistance in the online environment.  相似文献

Abstract

Libraries and archives are the subject of increasing depredations by thieves and vandals. One effective means of protection against losses to such criminals is sequestration of intrinsically valuable library and archival materials and making them available through a restricted access reading room. The identification of users of library and archival collections in such reading rooms is carefully authenticated. The actual use of the collections is done under constant staff scrutiny and is well documented. Response to reading room theft should be carefully choreographed but decisive.  相似文献

From the beginning of reference service in archives, the job has been defined as pointing users to potentially useful sources. Changes in the archival environment and in information require that the reference archivist become a front-line marketer of archives. This in turn requires that the reference archivist understand and utilize the concepts of marketing-customer-centered, exchange, and product-which are discussed in this article. Personality traits of archivists mitigate in favor of and against archivists' adoption of marketing as a strategy for advancing the archival service to society, but the reference archivist must use character strengths to overcome the weaknesses.  相似文献

Abstract

In today's world, library users are confronted with almost too many options for using information because of the ubiquitousness of technology. Yet, libraries can harness the power of the same technologies to help users find the information they need at the time it is needed. The tools described in this article represent a starting point for librarians looking for technologies that are easy to use, inexpensive, and have a reasonable learning curve. Technologies addressed include classroom technologies such as audience response systems and Web-based technologies, including Web tutorials and screencasting. Understanding user needs and the ways in which users utilize information systems is important since it can help us in developing and designing more effective and efficient information systems. This paper examines some of the theories that have evolved to explain what kind of mental processes are required for the use of information systems. Research on users of information systems is categorized into two basic groups (system-oriented vs. user-oriented studies), and reviewed. A sample of methodologies used for examining users and their information seeking behavior is then introduced and described. CASA is a project to develop a European metacatalog of serials and articles for both professional users (such as ISSN centers, bibliographic agencies, union catalogs, libraries, and publishers) and end users. The ISSN network will be the nucleus of the project, with ISSN centers being able to take advantage of telematic applications to exchange data, but union catalogs will also benefit.
