The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that 51% of American workers receive some type of pension from their employers. Yet surveys have shown that recent changes in government regulation and employee benefit practices have left workers and employers at a loss. This article evaluates Web sites that provide business librarians with information to keep up to date with changes in private pension systems. Business librarians will find the research and data provided on the sites useful for a broad range of library patrons including workers, retirees, business professionals, students, and the media. Clearly, as 71 million baby boomers head to retirement over the next two decades, private pensions will persist as a crucial issue for all Americans. 相似文献

Summary Holdings are multipurpose data which libraries use to acquire and control publications, display information to users, and manage physical and sometimes virtual items. This workshop focused on how the various functions interact, what further services librarians will demand from automation of their holdings, and what they can do in the meantime to make their holdings more useful. The workshop gave special attention to the USMARC Format for Holdings Data (MHFD), its features, advantages and difficulties, and its particular role in conveying serials information. It explored possibilities for adapting the format to solve the special problems associated with multiple versions and title changes. 相似文献

ABSTRACTDue to limited disclosure requirements, obtaining private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) information presents challenges to academic researchers. However, the universe of commercially available resources that focus on private equity and venture capital has increased substantially over the past decade. This article examines recent academic business literature to evaluate whether resources from newer providers in this subject area (CB Insights, PitchBook, Preqin, PrivCo) are gaining traction among academic researchers. It also matches the resources that researchers are citing to library holdings in an effort to measure library support for PE/VC research. The results indicate that data from traditional providers (Dow Jones, S&P Capital IQ, Thomson Reuters) continues to be heavily used and that libraries are providing moderate support for PE/VC research. 相似文献

Major holdings libraries within the UK higher education (HE) sector have until very recently received no compensation for the ‘burden’ imposed by visiting research‐active staff and students from other UK higher education institutions. The joint UK higher education funding bodies' Research Support Libraries Programme (RSLP) Access strand seeks to compensate the libraries for extra costs incurred in providing access and services for these ‘external researchers’. As there was no comprehensive and auditable data already available, RSLP commissioned the first large‐scale survey of the use made of UK higher education libraries by external researchers. Almost 5,000 research‐active staff and students were surveyed. The work was carried out between March and August 1999 and measured the number (and length, where appropriate) of in‐person, e‐mail, letter, fax and telephone contacts that researchers had with libraries other than those of their own institution. It also asked respondents to list the top five UK HE libraries in terms of importance for research in their discipline(s). The survey confirmed that there is very extensive use of libraries beyond those of the ‘home’ institution and provided the data on which the RSLP Access strand annual allocations for the academic years 1999–2000 to 2001–2002 were made. 相似文献

There was no single source of information about survey work being done in this country. The purpose of this study was to determine whether common elements in fund allocation formulas could be used to articulate “best practices” for fund allocations in academic libraries. Methodology involved a meta-analysis of published articles and Internet sites in which 75 fund allocation formulas were presented. Of the 75 formulas, 28 usable examples were analyzed to determine if there were any statistically significant elements within these formulas that could be identified, as well as to determine the degree of correlation for each component identified in the usable set. Findings are presented in this article, as well as implications for further research. 相似文献

Rational individuals may use a tax or license-fee financed public service TV channel to mitigate the paradox of rational ignorance. The approach presented in this article assumes that increased consumption of information by voters improves democratic decisions, but marginal returns decrease. Depending on how fast marginal returns decrease, the public service TV channel broadcasts either only (unbiased serious) news or, to induce voters to watch the informational content, sports and shows (entertainment) as well. 相似文献

If public libraries are going to provide essential information to immigrants, they must center their efforts to help on streamlining government Web sites. The necessity for this library approach comes because of the way government agencies have chosen to communicate with immigrants and others in need of government services. This article details how Hartford Public Library developed The American Place, an electronic information center, on its Web site. In the process, staff members had to become expert in finding, analyzing, organizing and communicating information on many different kinds of immigration and refugee institutions. [目的/意义]数字化的出现,给整个图书馆行业带来了巨大冲击和挑战。科学开展纸质馆藏管理工作,对于馆藏资源结构的调整、特色资源挖掘、电子图书建设、图书经费的节省起着关键作用。我国图书馆正经历资源重组的变革,借鉴国外图书馆管理工作中的经验与做法,有助于推动我国图书馆纸质馆藏的管理。[方法/过程]通过梳理OCLC官网信息及纸质馆藏可持续收集服务(SCS)具体服务案例,从基本概况、服务要素、服务流程等方面对SCS进行分析性介绍。[结果/结论]SCS借助GreenGlass软件,通过数据建模和数据可视化分析等手段,利用数据驱动管理纸质馆藏,可以为图书馆用户提供更加完善的纸质馆藏解决方案,指出纸质馆藏现状和发展趋势。其在数据采集及数据分析方面的经验可在服务流程、管理标准、软件开发等方面,为我国图书馆纸质馆藏管理工作提供有益的参考。 相似文献

Online public access catalogs (OPACS) enable the user to search a library's holdings in ways never before possible and to know the status of the desired items before going to the shelf. Serials constitute an important part of a library's collection. Holdings information is a necessary adjunct to bibliographic information. The online catalog of the future will give access to serial literature beyond that held by a library. As users become accustomed to the OPAC's capabilities their expectations for access to information will rise. Libraries should be aware of the factors to be considered when incorporating serials information into an online catalog. A management information system (MIS) is being developed as an aid to academic library collection development decisions and budgeting. It will utilize data on current publication output, library cataloging, current library holdings, library performance, and academic programs of the institution. Furthermore, it will relate these factors to one another. The MIS will describe what each library in a system is cataloging in relation to the current publication output and the academic programs supported by the library. It will also generate data regarding the funds required to purchase a specified portion of the current U.S. publishing output in each subject and may eventually predict the funds required to achieve a specified level of user satisfaction in each subject. The U.S. Government produces and provides massive amounts of statistics. Government initiatives have made much of the statistical information emanating from its various federal agencies, departments, and offices digitally accessible on the Internet. Assisting users in locating specific statistics can be one of the most challenging duties librarians have. This article provides a guide to government sources that will help librarians locate health statistics for researchers, health professionals, health consumers, and others. Some selected sites may be an endpoint of the search, and others may offer a solid beginning to a complex answer. Links are also provided to gateway Web sites, where a search strategy utilizing some of the tips discovered while compiling this list can be used to help promote successful outcomes.
