Based on an ethnographic case study and interviewing at an automobile manufacturing plant, this essay examines employee consent to health hazards and to the discursive and regulatory mechanisms that exclude employee experiences from official reports of workplace injury and illness. The article redresses the lack of scholarly attention in the occupational health and safety literature to the role of discourse in defining and negotiating risk and in constructing norms about reporting health and safety issues among employees. Findings demonstrate how employees themselves may participate in the construction of shared identity norms that act disciplinarily to shift responsibility for safety from management to individual workers. Understanding these hegemonic norms provides a basis to question occupational health and safety statistics, and offers strategic points of intervention to improve worker health protections.  相似文献

Drawing from qualitative data gathered at two correctional facilities, this paper empirically illustrates employee reactions to organizational contradictions in a total institution and advances a theoretical model positing that organizational tensions may be framed as complementary dialectics, simple contradictions, or pragmatic paradoxes—each accompanied by attendant organizational and personal ramifications. The analysis suggests that organizations can create structures in which employees are more likely to make sense of organizational contradictions in healthy ways and avoid the debilitating reactions associated with double binds. Specifically, through metacommunication about organizational tensions (for instance, manifest in role play enactment of contradictory occupational goals), employees are better able to understand the paradoxes that mark work life and make sense of them in emotionally healthy ways.  相似文献

This study examines the policies and occurrences of occupational health hazards among library personnel in private universities in the Southwest, Nigeria. A total population of 177 respondents from 15 privately owned universities were used for the study. The research instrument used in the collection of data was a questionnaire. The result of the study shows that most respondents have experienced occupational health hazards. The study also revealed that muscle strain, back aches, eye problems, and respiratory diseases are the most prevalent occupational health hazards experienced by library personnel. The study identified manual handling of library materials, constant exposure of the eyes to computer screens, inhaling of chemicals and dust, as well as long sitting position as the main causes of occupational health hazards among staff. Most respondents indicated that their organizations are not implementing policies on occupational health hazards. Recommendations were made on how to address the various issues raised.  相似文献

Because of the changing world of librarianship and the introduction of new technologies, telecommuting has become an innovative option for certain jobs in the library. Telework gives an organization the opportunity to retain skilled employees and cut the costs of recruiting, selection, and training of a new employee. There are certain tasks in the workflow of the interlibrary loan department that could permit an employee to work from a distance. This is specifically due to resource sharing management systems such as ILLiad. Florida Atlantic University decided to retain an interlibrary loan employee who had to relocate and try telecommuting on a trial basis. This paper details the employee's experiences.  相似文献

This article explores how activism by historians and archivists relates to and affects their work and how their work affects their activism. The findings are based on a survey of 195 historians (including educators) and archivists who self-identified as “someone who takes part in activities that are intended to achieve social or political change, especially someone who is a member of an organization.” The respondents participate in a wide variety of causes. Typically, their activities as activists reflect their professional skills and concerns, with a large majority involved in collecting and preserving the records of activist organizations. The article examines the benefits and costs for employers of employee activism, concluding the benefits outweigh the costs. The article also examines how activism affects the relationship between employers and their activist employees. While many activists receive recognition and other benefits from their employers for their activism, a minority suffers negative consequences up to and including firing and a substantial number feel inhibited from activism by their employers. The article also explores the effects of activism for the different occupational groups, determining that they are relatively similar but with some differences.  相似文献

档案职业健康管理,即档案从业者职业健康管理,是指在档案作业过程中,国家和用人单位为使档案从业者免受各方面有害因素影响而采取的措施的总称。文章基于管理维度理论,构建了档案职业健康管理模型(AOHM Model),其以主体要素、方式要素、资源要素、客体要素和内容要素为支撑轴,以代表档案职业健康管理终极目标的核心维、代表档案职业健康管理的运行机制的运作维、代表档案职业健康管理的指导思想的理念维为组成结构。该模型在职能交错与机构缺位的体制方面、投入不足与统筹缺乏的技术方面、修订滞后与内容零散的法制方面、意识培育与环节缺失的落实方面还存在一定的落地难度,可以从科研投入、法制建设和协会构建方面着手加以应对。  相似文献

Employee engagement has been shown to be related to higher organizational productivity and profitability, among other favorable outcomes; however, there is disagreement in the literature regarding the definition of employee engagement and how employees enact their engagement. The current study explored how employees of a cooperative communicatively displayed their own engagement to others inside and outside of the organization. Fifteen semi-structured interviews with employees were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results showed that employees displayed their engagement to others through external displays, which contradicts past research done on employee engagement. The study also revealed that social exchanges occurred between the organization and the employees. The ways in which employees communicated their engagement was a direct response to the exchanges occurring between these multiple stakeholders.  相似文献

This study tested Feeley and Barnett's (1997) Erosion Model (EM) of employee turnover which predicts that individuals who are more central in their communication network will be more likely to remain at their position (or less likely to turnover). Seventy employees from three different organizations were surveyed about their attitudes toward their jobs and were also asked to indicate (by checklist) which employees they spoke to regularly at work. Turnover data were obtained at 3 and 6 months time after the surveys were completed. Results generally supported the Erosion Model of employee turnover. Those employees with high Degree or number of links in the network were less likely to turnover. Employees who required fewer links to communicate to all others in the network (i.e., Closeness) were also less likely to turnover but this relationship only approached statistical significance (p = .06). Betweenness, defined as the frequency with which a person falls between pairs of other positions in a network, was also significantly related to employee turnover. It was also predicted, based on Feeley and Bamett's EM, that the relationship between network position and turnover would be mediated by an employee's level of commitment to the organization and his or her intentions to leave work. Closeness significantly predicted commitment while Betweenness and Degree were unrelated to commitment levels. Organizational commitment was negatively related to intentions to leave work and, unexpectedly, commitment levels were positively related to employee turnover. The results were discussed and the applications of this research for management practitioners were considered.  相似文献

本文基于引文分析方法,对2006—2015年国内学者参与发表的环境卫生与职业卫生学领域的6995篇SCI论文进行文献计量分析。采用HistCite引文编年可视化分析工具,绘制引文编年图,分析环境卫生与职业卫生学研究现状,找出该领域的重要机构、期刊和核心文献。结果本研究分析SCI文献6995篇,涉及机构5275家,包含作者18571位,分布于162种期刊,施引文献173354条,关键词10287个。2006—2015年国内环境卫生与职业卫生领域SCI发文量年均增长率1.14%。研究结果帮助了解2006—2015年该学科领域的研究规律和发展趋势,识别重要的研究机构、期刊和著作,为开展后续科研工作加以指导。  相似文献

Using validated and reliable psychometric instruments, 87 non-manager library employees were surveyed to determine the nature of the relationships between non-manager perceptions of authenticity and trust in two levels of leadership with self-rated engagement. The results provide insights about how non-managers perceive authenticity and trust in both direct managers and senior supervisors, and how those perceptions are related to self-ascribed employee engagement. While perceptions of trust and authenticity accounted for some of the variance found, undetermined variables may explain more of the variance in employee engagement. Recommendations for developing authentic leaders and engaging employees in a library setting are offered.  相似文献

Although there is a healthy amount in the literature about the importance of motivating student library employees in an academic setting, very little of it discusses the practical aspects of how to motivate students. A supervisor must often use ideas from other disciplines, including the business world and academia. In this article, the author suggests six highly effective, yet cost-conscious methods that have been used successfully in an academic library setting to keep student employees motivated and to retain them year after year. These six methods are: (a) encouraging autonomy, (b) holding contests, (c) providing food, (d) being open to suggestions, (e) using employee strengths, and (f) celebrating seasonal or university-specific events.  相似文献

Leadership faces a number of paradoxes that can be challenging and confusing, particularly as individuals take on new leadership roles. Employees want leaders to be decisive but participatory in decision making, focused on big pictures but contribute to detailed discussions, and engage but not micromanage. It is confusing as mixed messages are given to leaders and the opinions of employees vary, creating a situation in which it is difficult for leaders to fully understand employee expectations. Leaders not only need to understand these paradoxes but develop methods to balance employee expectations and communication strategies that help employees appreciate the balancing act that each leader must develop.  相似文献

Confidentiality breaches of health information can affect every person who seeks medical care. To better understand this phenomenon, breaches of confidentiality by employees in a health care organization were examined and compared to the perceived confidentiality maintenance actions of the organization's health care providers. The study, using observation and interviews of a health promotion department, supported Brann and Mattson's (2004) typology of confidentiality breaches, provided evidence for another type of communicative breach, and revealed inconsistencies between health care providers' actions and their perceptions of those actions. Future research should address the prevalence of such discrepancies in other health contexts and its impact on patient care.  相似文献

The circulation staff at Staley Library, Millikin University, in Decatur, Illinois, experimented with using Blackboard courseware to train student employees. Staff and students' feedback offer additional ways to utilize Blackboard's features. Some promising applications for training and communicating with student employees are described. This study uses diffusion of innovation theory to determine the relationship between transformational leadership and employee innovation via the mediation of organisational learning and knowledge sharing, as well as to examine the moderating role of social media use. A total of 375 employees and supervisors were recruited via random sampling from 89 municipal committees (one of the tiers of local government organisations) in Pakistan. Results indicate that transformational leadership has a positive impact on organisational learning and knowledge sharing. Similarly, organisational learning and knowledge sharing have a significant impact on employee innovation. Likewise, transformational leadership indirectly influenced employee innovation via organisational learning and knowledge sharing. Surprisingly, the moderating influence of social media use on the relationship between organisational learning and employee innovation proved insignificant. However, social media use had a significant effect on the relationship between knowledge sharing and employee innovation. This study provides informative insights by demonstrating that public sector leaders undertaking the transformational role and encouraging followers to use organisational learning, knowledge sharing and social media can help facilitate employee innovation in the public sector.  相似文献
