SUMMARY

This article highlights the California Cultures Project as a case study examining the architecture and framework required to support the deployment of digital objects as virtual collections at the California Digital Library. Chronologically arranged, it describes the Online Archive of California (OAC) Working Group's functional requirements for access to digital objects independent of parent finding aids, and the development and implementation of infrastructures supporting this vision. Discussion includes project organization and content selection for digitization, Web site service vision for K-12 teacher target audience, best practices for encoding, data standards, lesson plans, metadata requirements, METS creation tools, project manuals, repositories, search engines, tools enabling customizable interfaces, user assessment, and usability testing.  相似文献

Carol McCormick was Learning Resources Advisor in the library at James Cook University Hospital, South Teesside when she completed her BSc (Hons) Librarianship (Work Based Learning) degree at Northumbria University. She gained a 1st Class Honours and is now Learning Resources Librarian. Carol's dissertation formed part of a wider action research project into the provision of current awareness services at James Cook University Hospital. This article reports on the evaluation which was conducted after a Web 2.0 Startpage, or portal, had been introduced to improve access to current awareness information for all staff within the Trust. The Columbia University Online Books Evaluation Project sought to understand both user reactions to online books in the scholarly world and the cost profiles of print and online books. Scholars appreciated the opportunity to use the online format to locate a book and to browse it. However, they sought a print copy for extended reading. Incremental costs of online books are small for publishers. Libraries’ life-cycle costs are lower for online books than for print books. Summerfield and Mandel were both members of the Columbia University Libraries staff during the time of this project. Summerfield was a Project Director and Coordinator of this Project and Mandel was Deputy University Librarian and Director of this Project.  相似文献

The Mark Twain Project Online (MTPO) was launched in October 2007 and, in this first phase, digitally published several thousand of Twain's letters, almost 100 facsimiles of original documents, and over 28,000 records of other correspondence. The partners involved in the building of MTPO – the Mark Twain Papers, the California Digital Library, and University of California Press – created the site on the premise that Web‐accessible versions of this content, enhanced by innovative design and site architecture and a suite of research tools, would greatly improve scholars' ability to discover and work with this unique material. Anecdotal feedback supports this premise. Early data analysis confirms the usefulness of facsimiles and browsing functionality. Users tend to prefer simple keyword over complex searches; however, those conducting advanced searches are using the tool flexibly, as we had hoped. Further analysis is expected to improve our understanding of how researchers use these tools in combination.  相似文献

Birmingham City University's Library and Learning Resources’ strategic aim is to improve student satisfaction. A key element is the achievement of the Customer Excellence Standard. An important component of the standard is the mapping of services to improve quality. Library and Learning Resources has developed a methodology to map these “customer journeys” with students. The article considers themes in the published literature and provides an overview of a pilot project and its outcomes. The project's aims are evaluated including an assessment of the effectiveness of the mapping methodology in engaging students, the staff resource implications, and the identification of service improvements.  相似文献

The Journey Project, part of the Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries' Social Work Information Specialist in Context Fellowship, was designed to merge social work and consumer health librarianship skills in order to improve the provision of health information to patients. A resource notebook was created encompassing the many dimensions of cancer health information. A social work informationist distributed the notebooks and provided individualized consultations with respect to patients' health information needs. Areas of congruence as well as key differences between social work and consumer health librarianship emerged during the course of the project. Merging the two professions into the role of a social work informationist increased the ability to attend holistically to clients' health information needs.  相似文献

In the current environment of widely dispersed and disparate electronic data sources, collection managers increasingly need tools such as decision support systems to routinely perform common types of collection analysis: collection comparison, usage, package deals, and resource sharing. Four commercial decision support systems, Serials Solutions’ 360 Counter, Thomson Reuters’ Journal Use Reports, Swets’ ScholarlyStats, and Serials Solutions’ Ulrich's Serials Analysis System, are considered for their strengths in the above types of analysis and across five additional dimensions: Project COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources) reports supported, analysis tools, custom data sources supported, reporting features, and product support. Abstract

Distance Learning Library Services at the University of Kentucky provided an electronic reserves service as a pilot project for distance learning courses in the 2000–01 academic year. Distance Learning Programs, which is a part of the Distance Learning Technology Center, funded the project. Policies and procedures were formulated, an account was set up with the Copyright Clearance Center, and the service was marketed. Our first electronic reserves were available for the Fall 2000 semester.  相似文献

Abstract

This article reports on the “2019 Best Practices from World Libraries” Photo Gallery Project initiated by the International Connections Committee (ICC) of the International Relations Round Table (IRRT) at the American Library Association (ALA). The project was inspired by a 2018 ALA-IRRT Emerging Leader’s project, Toward Increasing Engagement of International New Professional Leaders in ALA Activities, which followed a survey study developed to explore IRRT’s ability to engage its international members. The article shares the project planning process and the key actions taken to build a virtual and physical gallery for the 2019 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, as well as highlights example programs from the project which demonstrate how libraries around the world are building stronger communities. Finally, the authors consider how the project may be improved upon and further developed in the future.  相似文献

This paper describes an ongoing improvement effort directed at increasing the quality of mediated searches at the Sladen Library and Center for Health Information Resources. The project is the result of an analysis of literature statistics for mediated searching for 1997. The improvement project utilizes Deming's Plan-Do-Check-Act or PDCA cycle. Henry Ford Health System encourages use of the PDCA methodology for improvement projects. A key component of this improvement effort was the introduction of a productivity standard that each searcher is required to meet. The library has global productivity goals, but this is the first time that individual searchers have been held to a quantitative performance standard. The outcome of the Literature Search Improvement Project has been favorable.  相似文献

Abstract

Blackboard Learning System(tm) enhancements can provide high levels of sophistication and make it relatively simple to provide a seamless connection between online courses and library services. But not all institutions are willing or able to make the investment for these additional features. Yet providing direct links to library resources from Blackboard courses may still be the best way to facilitate a connection between the two Web environments. This paper is intended to introduce the key points for consideration as an institution begins a project to insert a library presence into online and courseware-enhanced classes taught on Blackboard. A general “primer” on the potential functionality of Blackboard is included as well as instructions for the various means of creating links from course menus to a library Web page.  相似文献

Abstract

As digital natives enter higher education, there is the need to improve their information skills but they often overestimate their information research skills and are unfamiliar with the library. The serious games give the opportunity for innovative and engaging approaches to information literacy learning. The paper describes NAVIGATE - Information Literacy: a Game-based Learning Approach for Avoiding Fake Content, a project funded by Erasmus?+?program. The Project aims to improve the competences to avoid fake content of the higher education students in the Humanities. The paper focuses on the comparative analysis of the students’ skills gap and the difficulty of actually assessing the learning improvement achieved by games, highlighting the lessons learned and the open issues.  相似文献

Abstract

The Distance Learning Project (DISLEAP) was designed to give the OCLC Office of Research a fundamental understanding of the technologies underlying current distance learning capabilities. In particular, Internet and World Wide Web-based systems were studied. A primary goal of the study was to determine what the short- and long-term impacts of distance learning might be on libraries and what role OCLC might play in supporting libraries in their involvement with distance learning. In conjunction with this study, we undertook a parallel technology assessment to support the Regional OCLC Network Director's Advisory Committee (RONDAC) Distance Learning Task Force. The latter led to the demonstration of interactive, Internet-based conferencing capabilities to the OCLC Users Council in February 1998. We then purchased and deployed White Pine Software's MeetingPoint Conferencing Server and Microsoft's NetMeeting conferencing client. This report gives the details of the results of the assessments of distance learning technologies.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This article discusses the process for the production of online finding aids with BASYS-Fox system and it describes the scope of application of EAD in the Bundesarchiv. In 2000, the project “Presentation of Online Finding Aids with the EAD system” was started at Bundesarchiv. The project was promoted by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). The objectives were, first, to examine whether EAD could be applied to German archives, especially to the federal archives. Second, the possibilities for software development were to be assessed. BASYS-Fox is the result of this software development. Fox is an acronym for “Finding aids Online with XML.” The production of finding aids with BASYS-Fox starts with an XML export from the archive database of the federal archives (BASYS-S). After the XML file is imported into the BASYS-Fox system, different elements, which at present are not available in the database, have to be added to the file. After the completion of these additions, the finding aid is published with BASYS-Fox. Publishing in this context means the production of XML files according to EAD and to the local BArch DTD, which are saved in a file system. Access to these online finding aids is made possible by the classification scheme and via the Lucene search engine. At present there are about 200 online finding aids (list of Fox-Finding aids: http://www.bundesarchiv.de/foxpublic/index.html).  相似文献
