This preconference was a presentation of the Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop created by the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP). The workshop assumed a general knowledge of print serials cataloging and focused on issues specific to cataloging electronic serials. ABSTRACT Scholars working in the fields of medieval history and cultural history have recognized that understanding the cataloging and accessioning of books is central to understanding the transmission of ideas. This view should come as no surprise to catalogers themselves, who daily struggle with the problem of providing intellectual, and sometimes physical, access to texts and information. Unfortunately, general histories of libraries and even the library literature seem content to sketch out a chronological development of cataloging in line with the nineteenth and twentieth century view of library development, from a simple list to complex intellectual systems. In truth, however, those individuals responsible for cataloging books in medieval libraries faced many of the same challenges as catalogers today: how to organize information, how to serve local needs, and how to provide access to individual works within larger bibliographic formats. This article will summarize recent scholarship in the history of the book that relates to library cataloging, as well as providing parallels to the cooperative library environment of today. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis article discusses errors in subject analysis for Slavic materials due to “false friends,” words similar in form but different in meaning. An overview of false friends in Slavic languages is presented, followed by case studies demonstrating how false friends in book titles can lead to errors in subject analysis. We also review the resources that can assist Slavic catalogers in identifying false friends: print dictionaries, online lists, online translation tools, and records from the catalogs by the national libraries of countries of publication. Finally, implications for workflow in dealing with Slavic false friends in cataloging practice are discussed. 相似文献

AbstractRecent developments have altered the work performed in library technical services. As with similar positions, responsibilities for serials/continuing resources catalogers have experienced changes. This study examined qualifications sought by employers between the period from January 1, 2002 to May 21, 2017. Through content analysis of job advertisements, with emphasis on professional-level cataloging of serials/continuing resources, this study found a demand for a diverse mix of both traditional and emerging skills. AbstractNearly every library where the dominant language is English also has materials that are written in other languages. These materials can present unique challenges for catalogers. Many non-English language materials are located in the array of collections of the Special Collection Department of Mississippi State University (MSU). To properly process and catalog these materials, the cataloger used online tools which provided a greater understanding of the materials, allowing a higher cataloging standard. ABSTRACT In 2002, Texas A&M University (TAMU) Libraries obtained a National Level Enhance authorization for the OCLC visual materials format, allowing TAMU catalogers to upgrade records for video recordings in OCLC's WorldCat database at all encoding levels. This article presents examples of typical changes made by one cataloger to video recording records that were either enhanced or upgraded to full-level at TAMU during the last five years. Common changes included: correcting information in the title and statement of responsibility, correcting date information, adding or correcting information in notes, and creating access points. ABSTRACT Rather than being outsourced, catalog departments should become the agents for accessing departmental resources in a university or college. Trained, practicing catalogers are able to create MARC records that are a perfect fit for the OPAC. In an era of declining monies for resources, cataloging professionals ensure that all available materials are accessible via a unified database which is as close as any computer. Departmental libraries would continue to be in charge of all other aspects of their collections, but would not be responsible for loading information into the catalog. 相似文献

Summary The published literature specific to electronic serials cataloging over the decade of the 1990s and the work of CONSER, MARBI, the ALCTS Committee to Study Serials Cataloging, and others were reviewed to identify issues and developments. The proliferation and the changing nature of e-serials were challenges to catalogers throughout the period examined. Policies and procedures were offered by CONSER and its members. The entries are categorized as biographical sources, library bibliographies and catalogs, regional cartobibliographies by place of publication or geographic area of map coverage, thematic cartobibliographies, indexes to monographic and serial publications, comparative studies and introductory texts accompanying facsimile publications, basic bibliographies on the history of cartography, and cartographic periodicals. It provides examples of these various types of sources and comments on their helpful features. While the selections focus on English language resources and maps of North America, it suggests leads to find additional sources pertaining to particular unmet needs that may arise. 相似文献

Abstract Communication of public catalog issues throughout the University of Alabama Libraries has been and still is a major concern of the cataloging department. Many cataloging department heads hold the firm belief that improved user access to the libraries' collections can be provided through an improvement in the communication patterns between several key departments of the libraries and the catalog department. Through the input of a group of public service and collection development librarians, the department should be able to assess the time priorities for materials processing, resulting in a greater degree of probability that useful backlogs would be made accessible with a minimum of delay. As a cataloging department head, it is also my belief that a discussion of the cataloging process and the concerns of the catalogers could lead to more consistent and more efficient processing of materials. In November 1993 the Cataloging Advisory Group was formed as a one-year experiment in communication. Since that time the group has gone through numerous changes in both membership and charge but has continued to be one of the stronger discussion groups in the UA Libraries. The paper explores the group and its successes and failures during its six-year history. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Catalogers have been reporting the ways they use the Internet for several years, but as yet there has been little evaluation done to determine for which areas of cataloging the Internet is a valuable tool and for which areas it is not as useful. A survey was conducted in an effort to elicit this information. The responses indicated four areas in which catalogers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloging documentation and publications, and authority work.
