Background:With the mandate to review all available literature in the study''s inclusion parameters, systematic review projects are likely to require full-text access to a significant number of articles that are not available in a library''s collection, thereby necessitating ordering content via interlibrary loan (ILL). The aim of this study is to understand what effect a systematic review service has on the copyright royalty fees accompanying ILL requests at an academic health sciences library.Case Presentation:The library created a custom report using ILLiad data to look specifically at 2018 ILL borrowing requests that were known to be part of systematic reviews. This subset of borrowing activity was then analyzed to determine its impact on the library''s copyright royalty expenditures for the year. In 2018, copyright eligible borrowing requests that were known to be part of systematic reviews represented only approximately 5% of total filled requests that involved copyright eligible borrowing. However, these systematic review requests directly or indirectly caused approximately 10% of all the Spencer S. Eccles Library copyright royalty expenditures for 2018 requests. Conclusion:Based on the sample data set, the library''s copyright royalty expenditures did increase, but the overall financial impact was modest.  相似文献

Abstract

A study conducted at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library examines data from unfilled ILL requests to determine the status of materials housed in the Main Bookstacks of the library's collection. This study follows the research that was started in the original study conducted in 2002, “Needles in a Haystack: Using Interlibrary Loan Data to Identify Materials Missing from a Library's Collection.” The results of the second study indicate that the use of a high-density storage facility had a positive impact on the retrieval rate of ILL materials from the Main Bookstacks. It also indicated that fill rates increased when over 770,000 items were removed from the Main Book-stacks resulting in improved shelving conditions for the library's collection.  相似文献

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is an important service point in the academic library, a channel through which patrons can ask for specific books and expect that those books will be made available to them. Examining the methods in which libraries handle those requests may reveal new workflows wherein ILL can influence the direction of the library's permanent acquisitions. ILL data is able to drive immediate purchases of user-requested titles but also more complex models of acquisition. By comparing circulation rates and expenditures against traditional book-approval plans, acquisitions departments may also measure the financial effectiveness of purchase-on-demand programs and use them to both supplement and supplant those approval plans. At the core of Lehigh University's efforts is an internal library philosophy called “Flipped Interlibrary Loan” (F.I.L.L.), by which ILL can and should inform permanent acquisitions for the library collection.  相似文献

The term Electronic Library Information System is used to describe the Wallace Library Computer Access System at the Rochester Institute of Technology, a copmuter system that not only allows patrons to search the library's catalog but also remote online databases, the Internet, and a Logicraft CD-ROM server. The sources of 892 Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request citations processed between January 1 and March 31, 1992 were studied to determine how patrons used this increased acces to electronic resources. Information on source of request, patront type, material type, and fill rate was collected. Particular attention is paid to how ILL patrons are using the Internet. The impact of this technology on ILL, and areas for further research are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Beginning in July 2002, the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwent an 11 million dollar renovation. During three phases of the renovation, parts of the collection were inaccessible to patrons. In order to continue to make the library's collection available, library staff created a paging system. Patrons submitted requests for needed library materials using paper and electronic forms and library staff retrieved the requested items. The paging service was modified three times based on prior experience. Patrons were generally satisfied with the service. The renovation ended in December 2004.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Many events over the past decade have jeopardized the library's ability to fulfill its basic mission resulting in a shift of information delivery paradigms. Interlibrary loan, document delivery and resource sharing have become essential rather than peripheral and funding patterns are reflecting this philosophical shift. There is renewed interest in cooperative collection development and multiple options for meshing document delivery with an existing ILL program. Within this environment under a redefined mission statement, the Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks, addresses these shifting paradigms and has implemented a program to meet the information needs of its patrons.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Two macros are presented to track overdue ILL requests. The first tracks items your patrons have that are overdue, printing a report that includes the ILL#, due date, title of item, and patron info for each overdue record. The second macro tracks overdues that other libraries (as borrowers) have of your items, printing a report that includes the ILL#, the 3 letter symbol of the borrowing library, due date, status, and title of item for each overdue record.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

ILL Manager is a complete interlibrary loan system designed and marketed by the Research Libraries Group, Inc. Based on the ISO ILL protocols, ILL Manager can function as a distributed peer-to-peer system, sending and tracking requests directly with partners that also operate on an ISO-compliant system, server to server. ILL Manager can also trade requests with partners still residing on the centralized OCLC and RLIN ILL systems by sending protocol messages through ISO-compliant gateways to those systems. Users of ILL Manager search any Z39.50 compliant catalog, transfer bibliographic data into an ILL workform, and send protocol-compliant requests to virtually any resource-sharing partner. By achieving one workflow for all ILL transactions and automating many routine procedures, ILL Manager has potential for greatly reducing ILL unit costs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Interlibrary Loan Librarians are very busy, but taking time to develop a Holding Path is time well spent. A good Holding Path will save time, money, and speed up receiving requests. Developing a Holding Path with its Holding Groups is a relatively simple step by step process. One of the most important steps is the initial step of analyzing the library's borrowing activity in order to define the sets of lenders (Holding Groups) and making lists of libraries that fit in each group. Much of this information is available in already compiled lists of free libraries, reciprocal agreements, and low charging libraries that every ILL department uses. It is easy to add, delete, or change any aspect of a Holding Path once it is created.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

It has been established that much of the assistance provided to library patrons at reference desks does not require the knowledge and expertise of a professional librarian. Is the same thing true of the telephone calls received at reference desks in academic libraries? This article reports the results of one academic librarian's reference desk transaction log analysis which focuses on the categories of assistance provided to patrons who called the library's reference desk.  相似文献

Abstract

Many library directors and administrators spend a significant portion of their time attempting to market the library and its services. Getting patrons into the library and keeping their business is an integral part of the day-to-day management of the library. This mission, however, is not always effectively passed on to the front lines to the one group of people who face the patrons on a daily basis -the reference librarians.

This article will show how the library's service points can be used as marketing tools; outline what librarians and public service staff should know about their library; and discuss ways in which reference service librarians can help further the library's marketing and public relations goals.  相似文献

Abstract

Relais International Inc. would like to take this opportunity to introduce our latest product, Relais ILL. Instructional technology stands out amongst the array of products we have to offer as this product has been designed with the smaller library and interlibrary loan department in mind. Relais interlibrary loan combines the sophistication and automation of Relais Enterprise with ease of installation and implementation. Relais interlibrary loan is ideal for a wide range of libraries that are looking to streamline and automate their interlibrary loan operations.

For a cost-effective and integrated solution to your request management needs, use Relais ILL.

Use Relais ILL: to automatically search a range of catalogs via Z39.50 and use the results to automatically build a routing list; requests are sent out automatically, as ISO interlibrary loan transactions to libraries in the order you specify; stay in touch with patrons using predefined messages or create your own message on the fly.

The task of delivering documents between sites has always been a staff intensive undertaking for libraries due to physical distance, searching for locations for the requested document, availability of the requested document, as well as many other potential obstacles. Relais International Inc. is striving to overcome these barriers by offering swift and efficient Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan. Relais ILL's features include high levels of automation, tracking of requests, patron communication, and a plethora of possibilities to help simplify the interlibrary loan process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In June of 2001, the University of California Libraries initiated a pilot project that enabled library patrons to direct request items held in the University of California Special Collection Units. The pilot ended the need for patrons to initiate most requests for unique items in person through the Special Collections department and allowed patrons to self-determine the need for a unique item when searching the shared UC-wide catalog, Melvyl®. The following article discusses the process used to handle the requests, includes perspectives from the two units overseeing the requests, evaluates the overall success of the pilot and offers considerations for implementing a similar service elsewhere.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

What happens when libraries begin to use ILL to request items that they already own in their home collection? The goal of this multiyear study involving 9565 ILL requests to the Joint Library Facility in Bryan, Texas, is to examine whether or not the shared storage facility was becoming an ILL hub for some libraries. This paper reports the results of the study and how individual requesting and lending interlibrary loan policies and procedures might be altered to address these developing issues.  相似文献

Google Scholar is a free service that provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly works and to connect patrons with the resources libraries provide. The researchers in this study analyzed Google Scholar usage data from 2006 for three library tools at San Francisco State University: SFX link resolver, Web Access Management proxy server, and ILLiad interlibrary loan server. Overall, the data suggested that Google Scholar had become a very useful resource in the library and was a significant addition to the library's collection of research databases. SFX data revealed requests from Google Scholar grew ten-fold from 2006 to 2011, and that Google Scholar became the top-ranked SFX source for requests in 2011. Library patrons favored Google Scholar over San Francisco State University's federated search tool, MetaLib, and it has become an important source for interlibrary loan requests. Analysis of San Francisco State University usage data will assist other libraries in their decisions about the implementation of Google Scholar.  相似文献

Clio 1.2, the interlibrary loan records management software developed by Perkins and Associates, effectively tracks OCLC ILL transactions for both borrowing and lending. Clio is equipped to report statistical information, which it gathers as the user initiates or receives OCLC, ALA and fax requests. Interacting with OCLC's ILL Microenhancer for DOS and Windows, Clio 1.2 affords accurate and comprehensive information to its users and provides a number of access points to the database. Clio is another effective application software package that helps make the tracking of interlibrary requests manageable. This paper will cover and illustrate the larger elements of Clio and its operation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

At a large university library, helping patrons use a full text database such as LEXIS-NEXIS places pressure on reference staff because the service is complex. Staff cannot give the proper attention to patrons because activity at the reference desk can limit the time spent with each individual. Full-text services require more instruction and reference help than electronic bibliographic databases, but patrons often come for assistance just before the assignment is due. To relieve such pressure, librarians at Penn State's Pattee Library developed Just-in-Time demonstrations to help patrons learn how to use LEXIS-NEXIS when they need it. The Justin-Time demonstrations provide a weekly alternative which relieves the “I need it now” pressure by providing instruction on a weekly basis. These demonstrations have been well received by patrons and staff.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article illustrates the collaboration of three entities- the library, its online system and the authority service vendor-to achieve online authority control in a medium-sized academic library efficiently and cost-effectively. The authority service vendor checks and revises (as needed) the headings of the library's new bibliographic records, providing new authority records for them. Through a separate notification service, the vendor also provides revised authority records for the existing authority file, alerting the library when in-house online maintenance is needed. In this online environment, authority records and bibliographic records are maintained automatically by the vendor authority service. Thus, using various authority heading reports which can be generated by the local online system in conjunction with the notification service, the library concentrates its authority work on the elimination or correction of obsolete headings. The authority vendor services are effective and reduce the cost of maintaining the online catalog. Ultimately, accurate standardized headings enhance the ease and effectiveness of online searching and retrieval for all who consult the library's catalog.  相似文献

Summary

Librarians now have the capability, using a personal computer, to integrate bibliographic data, collection-use data, and even data from ILL requests into a customized serials database for the purpose of conducting automated use studies and qualitative collection analysis. This workshop builds upon a previous NASIG workshop and offers further ideas and enhancements for libraries creating customized databases. A general discussion of the issues and techniques related to building a customized serials database is presented, along with costs, benefits, and future considerations.  相似文献
