PURPOSE: The study seeks to determine how medical library professionals performing information-technology (IT) roles are compensated and how their positions are designed compared to information technology staff in their institutions. METHODS: 550 medical library directors in hospital and academic medical libraries were surveyed. The data was then compared to survey data from other compensation studies of the IT industry. RESULTS: There is a gap in compensation between medical library professionals and IT professionals performing similar functions using information technology. Technology-intense library jobs are compensated at higher levels than more traditional jobs. CONCLUSIONS: To compete with IT salaries, managers of medical library professionals will need to be ever more cognizant of the employment practices of IT professionals in nonmedical library disciplines. It is typically in the medical library's best interest to ensure that IT-related jobs, accountabilities, and capabilities of the medical library are known and understood by others, especially in the human resources and information technology staff departments.  相似文献

With the proliferation of distance education courses in the field of library and information science today, academic library paraprofessionals have the means to continue their education while continuing to be productive in their jobs. Courses can be taken online through institutions and organizations such as library schools, community colleges, and network consortia. Suggestions for types of places to look for appropriate courses are discussed. The paraprofessional library employee is in a unique position to pursue continuing education, and library administrators will find that supporting such efforts benefits both the employee and the library.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Studies report the need for personnel in all library fields to be skillful in software productivity tool usage. This skill is defined as encompassing collaborative and office automation software products and tools. Public library directors often find it difficult to assess this skill in applicants seeking employment. This research study, consequently, investigates the public library director's perception of the importance of professional job candidates having information technology skills as indicated by external certification in software productivity tools. The study divides the results based upon class standing among libraries and upon the tenure of the public library directors in their jobs. The conclusions support a positive response to the need for information technology skills and external certification of applicants by public library directors.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the development of NREN policy and its impact on library network budgets, jobs, and access. It uses Papers by and interviews with five leading Washington NREN and hbrary experts. The interv~ews provided the answers to several key questions. These answers calmed fears that AT&T would become America's library in 25 years. But they raised fears that user fee rates would challenge equal user access. Opinions varied concerning whether or not librarians were influencing policy decisions. But all agreed that librarians need to be active in developing network access and even network tools. “The Specialist” addresses the administration of special libraries, however, identifying the administrator of a small special library is problematic. In these small libraries within organizations, the librarian often works alone and the library is overseen by a non-librarian manager. In these cases, it is not as easy to identify or define the library's administrator as it would be in a public or academic library, or even a larger special library. This column introduces a model where the administration of small special libraries is a collaboration between librarians and non-librarian managers. In this model, information professionals exercise hidden leadership and management skills without leading a staff or possessing a management title. The column also suggests ways information professionals without explicit management responsibilities in the workplace can develop these skills and apply them in their jobs.  相似文献
