Abstract The author conducted a study with early childhood educators in New Delhi to understand the teachers’ perceptions of the relationship between their preparation and practice within a theory‐practice framework. The increasing incidence of obesity, leading to metabolic complications is now recognized as a major public-health problem.
Insulin resistance is a central abnormality of the metabolic syndrome, or syndrome X, originally hypothesized by Reaven Insulin
resistance is more strongly linked to intra abdominal fat than to fat in other depots. Adipose tissue secretes numerous factors
(adipokines) known to markedly influence lipid and glucose/insulin metabolism, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular integrity.
Some of these adipokines have been shown to directly or indirectly affect insulin sensitivity through modulation of insulin
signaling and the molecules involved in glucose and lipid metabolism. A pilot study was conducted with 80 healthy subjects
who were non diabetic, non hypertensive and having no family history of hypertension, the aim was to evaluate the correlation
of adiponectin and leptin levels with obesity and insulin resistance markers in healthy north Indian adult population. Serum
leptin, adiponectin and insulin was estimated by sandwich ELISA method. In our study, Leptin correlated significantly with
BMI (P value of 0.0000), WC (P value = 0.007), and HC (P value = 0.000). leptin showed significant positive correlation with fasting insulin (P value 0.002), post prandial insulin (P value = 0.000) and HOMA-IR (P value = 0.002). Adiponectin showed significant positive correlation with triglycerides (P value = 0.038), strong negative correlation with HDL-cholesterol (P value = 0.017). Serum concentrations of leptin are associated with central body fat distribution. Insulin resistance and
adiponectin is associated with dyslipidemia and these all disorders may ultimately lead to metabolic syndrome. 相似文献

In this article, we review research on the economics and sociology of education to assess the relationships between family and community variables and children’s educational outcomes in South Asia. At the family level, we examine the variables of family socioeconomic status (SES), parental education, family structure, and religion and caste. At the community level, we assess the limited research on the relationships between economic, cultural, and social characteristics and children’s educational outcomes. The literature presents several consistent relationships between the roles of family and community characteristics in determining educational outcomes and reveals several possibilities for further research. 相似文献

Eight weeks of latent iron deficiency in weaned female rats of Sprague Dawley strain maintained on experimental low-iron diet
(18–20 mg/kg) did not significantly change the gross body, weight and tissue weights of brain and liver. Packed cell volume
(PCV) and hemoglobin concentration remained unaltered. However, non-heme iron content in liver and brain decreased significantly
(p<0.001). The activities of glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamic acid decarboxylase, and GABA-transaminase (GABA-T) in brain
decreased by 15%, 11.4% and 25.7% respectively. However, this decrease was not statistically significant. Binding of3H Muscimol at pH 7.5 and 1 mg protein/assay increased by 143% (p<0.001) in synaptic vesicular membranes from iron-deficient
rats as compared to the controls.3H glutamate binding to the synaptic vesicles was also carried out under similar condition. However, the L-glutamate binding
was reduced by 63% in the vesicular membranes of iron deficient animals. These studies indicate that iron plays important
functional role in both excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors. 相似文献

Despite costly global efforts to improve and reward teacher qualifications like education and experience, little international
evidence exists on the relationship between these attributes and student achievement. It is also unclear whether these attributes
are more important for disadvantaged children, or in lower-income countries. This article examines the relationships among
teacher characteristics (experience, education, readiness to teach, and gender), student background, and fourth grade students’
mathematics and science achievement across 25 diverse countries participating in the 2003 Trends in International Mathematics
and Science Study. The analysis revealed limited evidence that the teacher characteristics deemed important in teacher upgrading
and compensation are systematically related to student test scores, or that these characteristics are more important for lower-income
students. It also found no relationship between national income and the importance of these characteristics. These results
add to increasing evidence that efforts to improve teacher quality must look beyond simply increasing and rewarding measurable
teacher qualifications like education and experience. Further, those who design cross-national studies should consider developing
richer measures of teacher skill and knowledge. 相似文献
