Education, Work and Well-being

The current crisis in the 'work-society' has implications for future educational policy. This paper explores some of the philosophical issues of relevance here. It starts with the meaning of 'work' and the claim that work should be central to our lives. It then examines the arguments that Richard Norman and Sean Sayers have provided for work as a basic human need, concluding that the case has not been made out. A section on the place of both autonomous and heteronomous work in personal well-being is followed by one on education and the future of work.  相似文献

The career development and disability knowledge of 97 students with learning disabilities from three postsecondary institutions in the Midwest was examined through semi‐structured interviews. Students with disabilities who were eligible for services while in high school generally did not engage in transition planning as required by federal law. Their career development activities were limited despite having unique career needs. The majority of students had difficulty describing their disability and its impact on their career exploration and planning. For students with learning disabilities at the postsecondary level, career development services should be provided, including training in self‐advocacy and career exploration in the first two years. Instruction in career self‐management skills should be ongoing.  相似文献

Efficient approximate representation of bi-objective tradeoff sets

The problem of efficiently approximating the tradeoff (Pareto-optimal) curve or set for optimization problems with two conflicting objectives is considered. In particular, a new method is proposed for computing a relatively small number of points to define an approximate representation of the tradeoff set. The efficiency of the method is established by showing the maximum number of points required to achieve a prescribed precision of approximation. Redefining reference in an academic health sciences library: planning for change.

Deciding that changes in the pattern of questions at the reference desk required focused consideration, the reference librarians at the Health Sciences Library of the University at Buffalo held a planning retreat. Technology-induced changes in the information-seeking behavior and reference needs of the library's clientele caused a reassessment of how these needs could best be met and what is the best use of librarians' time. The librarians considered current trends in reference in other academic libraries, the specific needs of the clientele of the Health Sciences Library, and the strengths and expertise of the library staff. Conservation of chemically degraded waterlogged wood with sugars

The effectiveness of two non-reducing sugars, both analogues of sucrose, to conserve degraded waterlogged wood was examined. The two sugars examined are trehalose and sucralose, both stable and relatively unreactive. The ability of these sugars to conserve a series of degraded tongue depressors was measured by determining the anti-shrink efficiency of each at various concentrations and comparing them to sucrose. The findings of this study indicate that both sucralose and trehalose may be effective conservation treatments for waterlogged archaeological wood and that at moderate concentrations the performance of both is comparable to sucrose. However, sucralose has a lower solubility, and concentrations higher than 60% w/v were not examined, whereas concentrations of up to 100% w/v of trehalose were studied. At these higher concentrations trehalose performed as well, if not better than sucrose, although there were crystalline deposits on the wood surface at these higher concentrations. With modifications and careful control, both of these sugars may be suitable conservation alternatives to sucrose due to their long-term stability and resistance to hydrolysis.  相似文献
