In an attempt to increase applications from low-income students, some selective 4-year colleges are developing programs to target and attract low-income students. However, relatively little research has looked at factors important in the college application process, and in particular, how these factors differ for low-income students. This paper uses data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97) to analyze factors influencing students’ college application decisions, with a focus on the decision to apply to a selective 4-year college. We hypothesize that distance from a student's home to selective colleges may play a role in the application decision and differentially impact low-income students. Our results suggest that distance does matter, although the effects do not vary by family income level. 相似文献

Effective teaching skills consist of high levels of student engagement based on good classroom and time management skills; the ability to scaffold learning that is adapted to students' current levels of understanding; cognitively engaging students in higher-order thinking; and encouraging and supporting success. Experiments were conducted to explore the impact of combining various components of eight leading information retrieval systems.
Each system demonstrated improved effectiveness through the use of blind feedback, also known as pseudo-relevance feedback, a form of query expansion. Blind feedback uses the results of a preliminary retrieval step to augment the efficacy of a
secondary retrieval step. The hybrid combination of primary and secondary retrieval steps from different systems in a number
of cases yielded better effectiveness than either of the constituent systems alone. This positive combining effect was observed
when entire documents were passed between the two retrieval steps, but not when only the expansion terms were passed. Several
combinations of primary and secondary retrieval steps were fused using the CombMNZ algorithm; all yielded significant effectiveness
improvement over the individual systems, with the best yielding an improvement of 13% (p = 10−6) over the best individual system and an improvement of 4% (p = 10−5) over a simple fusion of the eight systems. 相似文献

Wikipedia is known as a free online encyclopedia. Wikipedia uses largely transparent writing and editing processes, which
aim at providing the user with quality information through a democratic collaborative system. However, one aspect of these
processes is not transparent—the identity of contributors, editors, and administrators. We argue that this particular lack
of transparency jeopardizes the validity of the information being produced by Wikipedia. We analyze the social and ethical
consequences of this lack of transparency in Wikipedia for all users, but especially students; we assess the corporate social
performance issues involved, and we propose courses of action to compensate for the potential problems. We show that Wikipedia
has the appearance, but not the reality, of responsible, transparent information production.

Most of today's students are skilled in instant messaging, Web browsing, online games, and blogs. These have become part of the social landscape and have changed how we learn and where we learn. The question becomes how to harness the attractiveness and ubiquity of electronic venues toward the goal of teaching neuroscience. At the Rice University Center for Technology in Teaching and Learning, a central focus is the creation of innovative materials that appeal to middle school students. A recent project was undertaken through a Science Education Drug Abuse Partnership Award (R25 DA15063) from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to inform adolescents about the neurobiology of substance abuse and the current research dealing with a class of drugs known as club drugs. Problem-based learning, multimedia pedagogy, and the National Science Content Standards were integrated to produce The Reconstructors, an episodic series available via the World Wide Web at http://reconstructors.rice.edu. A field test of students from five schools assessed the retention of content after "playing" The Reconstructors series titled Nothing to Rave About.
