One of the roles of the modern zoo is to provide environmental education. Zoo visitation comprises primarily family groups seeking to spend time together. There is potential for tension between message and audience expectation as zoos seek to raise awareness of the effects of irresponsible human behavior on the environment. This may unsettle family visitors. This study explored levels of tolerance of the zoo audience to a disturbing exhibition covering broad environmental themes. Results showed that participants were prepared to reflect on the content and at times feelings were sufficiently strong for zoo visitors to challenge one another's beliefs. The delicate positioning of zoos as environmental education providers is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Changes were observed in the thickness of a subcutaneous fat layer as a result of exercising an underlying unilateral muscle over a period of time using the subcutaneous fat layer over the inactive contralateral muscle as a control. The observations were made on 15 male subjects who participated in a ten-week weight-training program which involved the triceps of the dominant arm. A Harpenden skinfold caliper was used to estimate the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layers. The findings did not support the postulate that subcutaneous fat is reduced in localities where muscles are active and in proportion to their activity.  相似文献

This paper finds its origins in a multidisciplinary research group’s efforts to assemble a review of research in order to better appreciate how “spatial reasoning” is understood and investigated across academic disciplines. We first collaborated to create a historical map of the development of spatial reasoning across key disciplines over the last century. The map informed the structure of our citation search and oriented an examination of connection across disciplines. Next, we undertook a network analysis that was based on highly cited articles in a broad range of domains. Several connection gaps—that is, apparent blockages, one-way flows, and other limitations on communications among disciplines—were identified in our network analysis, and it was apparent that these connection gaps may be frustrating efforts to understand the conceptual complexity and the educational significance of spatial reasoning. While these gaps occur between the academic disciplines that we evaluated, we selected a few examples for closer analysis. To illustrate how this lack of flow can limit development of the field of mathematics education, we selected cases where it is evident that researchers in mathematics education are not incorporating the important work of mathematicians, psychologists, and neuroscientists—and vice versa. Ultimately, we argue, a more pronounced emphasis on transdisciplinary (versus multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary) research might be timely, and perhaps even necessary, in the evolution of educational research.  相似文献

Lifelong education is more than an extension of existing provision, ‘schooling‐plus’. An important result of the microtechnology revolution will be to offer a challenge to the practice of education as primarily teacher‐centred instruction. Television already plays an enormously influential role in family life; its own transformation, to take account of the arrival of video, cable and other developments, implies a greater appreciation of the fact that audience response is the key to effective educational programming. Meanwhile, students are using video with increasing ease and familiarity and the advent of video discs offers exciting new opportunities. The contribution of video to stimulating imagination, and to a wider and deeper role for education in our changing society, is an intriguing one.  相似文献
