The recent surge in interest in progressive education ideas has often been accompanied by an increased advocacy for learning outdoors, with experiential and holistic learning approaches considered the most beneficial method for cultivating personal and social development and raising awareness of contemporary environmental concerns. However, theoretical and practical unease exists about how increased opportunities to learn outdoors can help young people to reflect on their experiences and make sound decisions. The paper reviews the contribution of John Dewey to debates about experiential education and the development of moral deliberation; as for Dewey there are strong connections between cognition, character and actions. This leads, in conclusion, to analysis of outdoor learning prospects and the extent to which these can benefit personal responsibility and social interaction, and provides learners with the capacity to make dependable voluntary decisions that display stable states of character.  相似文献

The angiogenesis-signalling pathway is a physiological response after mechanical loading to promote matrix remodelling and thereby maintain tissue homeostasis. Studies have shown increased expression of angiogenic molecules in response to loading and in ruptured ligaments. Recently, polymorphisms within the vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and kinase insert-domain receptor (KDR) genes were associated with risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures and Achilles tendinopathy in Caucasian study groups. A case-control genetic association study was conducted on 100 controls and 98 participants with surgically-diagnosed ACL ruptures; of which 51 participants reported non-contact mechanism of injury (NON). All participants were genotyped for five functional polymorphisms: VEGFA (rs699947, rs1570360, rs2010963) and KDR (rs2071559, rs1870377). Haplotypes were inferred. In the male participants, the KDR rs2071559 AG genotype was significantly over-represented (P = 0.048, OR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.00–3.59) in the controls. Furthermore, the GG genotype was significantly under-represented in the male controls compared to the male ACL group (P = 0.018, OR: 2.77, 95% CI: 1.17–6.55) and the male NON subgroup (P = 0.013, OR: 3.26, 95% CI: 1.24–8.58). Haplotype analysis implicated the KDR gene in all participants and in male participants separately. Collectively, these results implicate the angiogenesis-signalling pathway as a potentially key biological pathway contributing to ACL injury susceptibility.  相似文献

This study determined the effect of 8 wk of mindfulness training (MT) on salivary cortisol (sCort) and rate of salivary Immunoglobulin-A (sIgA) secretion in wheelchair-basketball players during a competition period. The mindful group completed 8 weeks of MT in addition to training and competition. sCort and rate of sIgA secretion were measured at baseline, at 2-week intervals, the end and 2 weeks following the intervention. A significant time and group interaction was observed for sCort (= 3.297, P = 0.040, ES = 0.191); sCort increased in the control group from MT-BL to MT-2wk (= 0.001) and remained significantly elevated at MT-4wk (= 0.013) and MT-6wk (= 0.002). sCort decreased from MT-6wk to MT-8wk (< 0.001) and concentrations were not different at MT-8wk and Post-2wk to MT-BL (> 0.05). Mindful group sCort increased from MT-BL to MT-2wk (= 0.042) but decreased to concentrations no different to MT-BL for the rest of the intervention period (P > 0.05). There were no group differences in rate of sIgA secretion during the intervention (= 0.810). It was concluded that 8 weeks of MT attenuated the increase in sCort associated with the competition period.  相似文献

In this study, the authors examine Major League Baseball free agency to identify whether certain factors beyond a player’s on-field performance contribute to contract premiums. These premiums are considered to be the difference between the compensation a player receives in free agency and the marginal revenue product (MRPt-1) in their contract year. Using 345 free agent transactions over a four-year period (2012–2015), the authors examine the relationships between potential free agent contract premiums and the attributes of a player’s previous team, as well as how contract premiums may be influenced by the level of interest from other teams and certain facets of the acquiring teams. Results suggest that free agents tend to receive compensation premiums when they played for a successful team during their contract year. Playing for a large-market team during their contract year also influenced contract premiums. In addition, free agents tended to realize compensations premiums when multiple teams were bidding for their services, the acquiring teams were in playoff contention the prior year, and the acquiring teams possessed relatively more financial resources. Findings shed additional light on how factors peripheral to a player’s on-field performance may influence the free agency market. Recommendations include that effective control mechanisms are necessary to ensure free agent compensation is commensurate with the value of the player.  相似文献

The determinants of fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders' intentions to perform science learning activities were investigated. Ajzen and Fishbein's theory of reasoned action was used to assess students (n = 254) on their laboratory and nonlaboratory behavioral intentions, which required using the two determinants included in the theory (attitude toward the behavior and subjective norm) as well as five external variables identified by the researcher. The five external variables were gender, grade, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status as determined by the range of the family's annual income, and attitude toward science. Two models were tested. The first model included the two determinants as predictor variables and behavioral intention as the criterion. The second model involved the analysis of the two determinants as they were considered in subgroups according to the five external variables. This model also included interaction terms. For laboratory learning activities, the two determinants (attitude toward behavior and subjective norm) were found to contribute collectively to the prediction of behavioral intention, accounting for almost a fourth of the variance. For nonlaboratory learning activities, the two determinants accounted for over a fourth of the variance in behavioral intention. Testing of the second model revealed that for both laboratory and nonlaboratory behavioral intentions, no interaction terms were significant. The results of post hoc tests on significant predictors of behavioral intentions for laboratory and nonlaboratory activities are reported. This study compares test-retest reliability and peak exercise responses from ramp-incremented (RAMP) and maximal perceptually-regulated (PRETmax) exercise tests during arm crank exercise in individuals reliant on manual wheelchair propulsion (MWP). Ten untrained participants completed four trials over 2-weeks (two RAMP (0–40 W + 5–10 W · min?1) trials and two PRETmax. PRETmax consisted of five, 2-min stages performed at Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) 11, 13, 15, 17 and 20). Participants freely changed the power output to match the required RPE. Gas exchange variables, heart rate, power output, RPE and affect were determined throughout trials. The V?O2peak from RAMP (14.8 ± 5.5 ml · kg?1 · min?1) and PRETmax (13.9 ± 5.2 ml · kg?1 · min?1) trials were not different (P = 0.08). Measurement error was 1.7 and 2.2 ml · kg?1 · min?1 and coefficient of variation 5.9% and 8.1% for measuring V?O2peak from RAMP and PRETmax, respectively. Affect was more positive at RPE 13 (P = 0.02), 15 (P = 0.01) and 17 (P = 0.01) during PRETmax. Findings suggest that PRETmax can be used to measure V?O2peak in participants reliant on MWP and leads to a more positive affective response compared to RAMP.  相似文献

The present study investigated the relationship between applied behavioral training and reinforcement preferences of classroom teachers. Data obtained from the Positive Reinforcement Observation Schedule (PROS), a paired comparison task, indicated minimal differential reinforcement preferences for classroom teachers with no training, limited training, or extensive training in applied behavioral analysis. The results are discussed with reference to the educational implications of existing behavioral training programs and class-room practice.  相似文献

Many forms of bias have been identified in higher education research, and in educational and social research in general. This article identifies a further form of bias, positivity bias, and places it in this broader context. Positivity bias is the tendency, in some forms of published higher education research, to only or chiefly report examples of initiatives or innovations that worked and received positive evaluations. Empirical evidence of positivity bias, in the form of an analysis of a sample of published articles from selected higher education journals, is presented and discussed. Suggestions as to the causes of positivity bias and how it might be handled are presented.  相似文献
