Conclusions In view of growing national concern over the decline in scientific literacy among students and the need to attract more students
to science and engineering, it is incumbent upon college and precollege science faculties to work together to find ways to
help solve these problems. To this end, college and precollege science teachers and administrators established the NEW Science
Forum and its dinner-and-lecture series and Science Teacher Day field trips. These activities stimulate teacher interest in
science, upgrade scientific understanding, and provide new insights and information for classroom use. In addition, the Forum
is an opportunity for discussion among techers and between teachers and university science faculty members. The continued
high level of participation by teachers and professors during the seven years since the founding of the NEW Science Forum
attests to its value to area educators. Our experience prompts us to encourage our colleagues at other colleges and universities
to explore the feasibility of establishing a similar program in their regions. The rewards of strengthening ties with area
school science teachers far outweigh lost time from research and the trepidation of operating with a zero budget. 相似文献

In three experiments, we examined the effect on the patterns of responding noted on fixed interval (FI) schedules of prior
exposure to a range of interval and ratio schedules. Rats leverpressed for food reinforcement on random ratio (RR), random
interval (RI), or variable interval (VI) schedules prior to transfer to FI schedules. In Experiment 1, prior exposure to an
RR schedule retarded the development of typical FI patterns of responding. Exposure to a yoked RI schedule produced even greater
retardation of typical FI performance. This effect was replicated in Experiment 2, using a within-subjects design. Rats responded
on a multiple RR-RI schedule prior to a multiple FI-FI schedule. Typical FI performance emerged more slowly in the component
previously associated with the RI than with that associated with the RR. In Experiment 3, exposure to an RR schedule retarded
the development of FI performance to a greater extent than did exposure to a VR schedule. The latter schedule was programmed
to allow the possibility that inhibitory control would develop after reinforcement. These results confirm that ratio schedules
independently result in the disruption of FI responding. This effect was not long lasting and cannot be used plausibly to
explain species differences in responding to FI schedules. However, it does suggest that temporal control—as manifested by
the transfer of inhibitory control from one schedule to another—could facilitate movement between interval schedules. 相似文献

Service-learning is a high-impact educational practice that benefits the community, the university, and students (Jacoby, 2015). It also represents an educational practice that specifically supports the integration of Christian thought and action within Christian institutions (Schaffer, 2004). The purpose of the study was to determine the level of service-learning institutionalization within the faith-based, faith-affiliated, and secular institutions of the Gulf Coast Region of the United States. Utilizing an electronic version of Furco's (2009) Self-Assessment Rubric for the Institutionalization of Service-Learning in Higher Education, chief academic officers at independent colleges and universities of the Gulf Coast region provided their respective institution's current stage of development on the institutionalization continuum. The majority of administrators reported scores indicative of development at the midpoint of the continuum, the Quality Building Stage. The presence of a university philosophy and mission was the most developed dimension, and community partner involvement was the least developed. This study provides data-driven, researched-based recommendations regarding the institutionalization of service-learning for Christian colleges and universities. 相似文献

This study examines violence in prime-time broadcast network television programs aired between 1967 and 2015. The data show that violence has been a consistent and central part of programming, although levels vary by genre. Violence decreased in the 1990s, due mostly to the greater prominence of sitcoms and crime-related procedurals (such as Law & Order and CSI), which feature fewer explicit acts of violence. However, violence is making a serious comeback on prime time, with four of the five measures we examined reaching historically high levels in the 2010s. The percentage of characters involved in violence remains lower than in earlier years. Despite some ebbs and flows over the years, and dramatic institutional and technological changes, even at its lowest points violence on television is never far from the scene and remains difficult for the heavy viewer to avoid. 相似文献

This study aims to understand the role that optimism could play in the context of a health asset approach to promote adolescent health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Adolescents (n = 948), between 11 and 16 years old from a medium-sized rural town in Sweden, answered questionnaires measuring optimism, pessimism, and HRQOL. The findings indicate a significant decrease in optimism and a significant increase in pessimism between early and midadolescence. The study has allowed us to present associational evidence of the links between optimism and HRQOL. This infers the potential of an optimistic orientation about the future to function as a health asset during adolescence and by implication may provide additional intervention tool in the planning of health promotion strategies. 相似文献

Policies toward nonresident students by public institutions of higher education are an increasingly important issue. This paper looks at the determinants of student migration and the interrelationship of student migration and tuition rates. Students are found to be attracted to schools in states that are attractive to migrants in general, specifically schools in states with favorable economic and environmental conditions, and high tuition rates are found to be a significant deterrent to nonresident students. Tuition rates for nonresident students are found to be largely determined by tradition, although states are found to have a tendency to increase nonresident tuition if they are strong net importers of students. 相似文献
