Self-concept and ego development, two intertwined aspects of self-indicating well-being and social-cognitive maturation, respectively, were examined in a representative sample of deaf adolescents of normal intelligence (N = 68), using translated and adapted versions of Harter's (1988, Manual for the self-perception profile for adolescents. Denver, CO: University of Denver) multidimensional measure of self-concept and Loevinger's (1998, Technical foundations for measuring ego development. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum) measure of ego development. Compared to hearing norm groups, deaf adolescents showed lower levels of self-perceived social acceptance, close friendships and ego development and higher physical appearance. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses controlling for sociodemographic variables showed positive associations of global self-worth with support for signing during childhood and quality of parent-child communication and of ego development with attending a regular school. Cluster analysis identified three social competence profiles: uniformly low competence, uniformly high competence, and low social acceptance with high physical appearance. Cluster membership was associated with school type, ego development, and (past) neurological disorder. The results are discussed in reference to interventions aimed at the well-being of deaf youth. 相似文献

This study examined the relationship between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism, stress, depression, and satisfaction with life in a sample of undergraduate women. The authors found that maladaptive perfectionists had lower satisfaction with life and higher stress and depression scores compared with adaptive perfectionists. Results also indicated that stress mediated the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and depression and between both maladaptive and adaptive perfectionism and satisfaction with life. The lack of technologies that combine automated manipulation, sorting, as well as immobilization of single metazoan embryos remains the key obstacle to high-throughput organism-based ecotoxicological analysis and drug screening routines. Noticeably, the major obstacle hampering the automated trapping and arraying of millimetre-sized embryos on chip-based devices is their substantial size and mass, which lead to rapid gravitational-induced sedimentation and strong inertial forces. In this work, we present a comprehensive mechanistic and design rationale for manipulation and passive trapping of individual zebrafish embryos using only hydrodynamic forces. We provide evidence that by employing innovative design features, highly efficient hydrodynamic positioning of large embryos on a chip can be achieved. We also show how computational fluid dynamics-guided design and the Lagrangian particle tracking modeling can be used to optimize the chip performance. Importantly, we show that rapid prototyping and medium scale fabrication of miniaturized devices can be greatly accelerated by combining high-speed laser prototyping with replica moulding in poly(dimethylsiloxane) instead of conventional photolithography techniques. Our work establishes a new paradigm for chip-based manipulation of large multicellular organisms with diameters well above 1 mm and masses often exceeding 1 mg. Passive docking of large embryos is an attractive alternative to provide high level of automation while alleviating potentially deleterious effects associated with the use of active chip actuation. This greatly expands the capabilities of bioanalyses performed on small model organisms and offers numerous and currently inaccessible laboratory automation advantages. 相似文献

Veterinary students at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London learn about bovine abdominal anatomy using a virtual reality simulator, the Haptic Cow. A haptic device is positioned inside a fiberglass model of the rear‐half of a cow, allowing students to palpate virtual abdominal structures via a robotic arm. The Haptic Cow helps to address some of the practical and ethical issues around sourcing and using cadavers and live animals in teaching. Abstract In this article, the editors of the recent National Research Council report Learning Science in Informal Environments: People, Places, and Pursuits discuss the report’s implications for museum professionals. The report is a synthesis of some 2,000 studies and evaluations of learning in non‐school settings such as museums. Here we focus on three specific topics discussed in the full report, which we see as particularly important for museum professionals. These are: a framework for developing and studying science learning experiences; cultural diversity as an integral resource for learning; and assessment of learning. Many museums include “learning” among their goals and many researchers concern themselves with how museums and other settings can be organized to support learning. Yet this wealth of research is rarely brought into focus and offered as guidance to the museum community. 相似文献

Numerous skill batteries assess fundamental motor skill (e.g., kick, hop) competence. Few skill batteries examine lifelong physical activity skill competence (e.g., resistance training). This study aimed to develop and assess the content validity, test-retest and inter-rater reliability of the “Lifelong Physical Activity Skills Battery”. Development of the skill battery occurred in three stages: i) systematic reviews of lifelong physical activity participation rates and existing motor skill assessment tools, ii) practitioner consultation and iii) research expert consultation. The final battery included eight skills: grapevine, golf swing, jog, push-up, squat, tennis forehand, upward dog and warrior I. Adolescents (28 boys, 29 girls; M = 15.8 years, SD = 0.4 years) completed the Lifelong Physical Activity Skills Battery on two occasions two weeks apart. The skill battery was highly reliable (ICC = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.72–0.90) with individual skill reliability scores ranging from moderate (warrior I; ICC = 0.56) to high (tennis forehand; ICC = 0.82). Typical error (4.0; 95% CI 3.4–5.0) and proportional bias (r = ?0.21, p = .323) were low. This study has provided preliminary evidence for the content validity and reliability of the Lifelong Physical Activity Skills Battery in an adolescent population. 相似文献

This paper attempts to explore the diminishing contributions of psychology in teacher preparation programs. Using situated
learning as a basis for discussion, I have argued that a student may take a course in educational psychology and then subsequently
discover that subsequent preparation may ignore those psychological caveats regarding the efficacy of proposed instructional methodology such as situated learning. These include cognition, group processes,
and transfer of training. However, the presence of such concerns is not confined to situated learning specifically. It may

Evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acid supplementation could reduce muscle soreness and maintain muscle function following eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage. The aim of this applied field study was to investigate the effectiveness of consuming a protein-based supplement containing 1546?mg of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) (551?mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 551?mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) twice daily (FO) compared to a protein-based placebo (P) on muscle soreness, countermovement jump (CMJ) performance and psychological well-being in 20 professional Rugby Union players during 5 weeks of pre-season training. Players completed a 5-point-Likert soreness scale with 5 indicating “no soreness” and a questionnaire assessing fatigue, sleep, stress and mood each morning of training, plus they performed CMJ tests once or twice per week. Data were analysed using magnitude-based inferential statistics and are presented as percent beneficial/trivial/harmful. On day 35, there was a likely (% beneficial/trivial/harmful: 94/5/1) moderate (0.75, standardized mean difference (SMD)) beneficial effect of FO vs. P on the change in lower body muscle soreness compared with day 0 (FO: ?3.8?±?21.7%; P: ?19.4?±?11.2%). There was a likely (92/7/0) moderate (SMD: 0.60) beneficial effect of FO vs. P on CMJ performance (change from baseline to day 35, FO: +4.6?±?5.9%; P: ?3.4?±?8.6%). From day 20, a moderate beneficial effect of FO on fatigue was observed. In terms of practical relevance, the moderate beneficial effect of adding fish oil to a protein-based supplement on muscle soreness translated into the better maintenance of explosive power in elite Rugby Union players during pre-season training. 相似文献
