This study examines resilient and nonresilient characteristics in mathematics among Hispanic students in a major metropolitan city located in the south central region of the United States. The study examined data from semistructure interviews of 118 resilient and nonresilient English language learners (ELLs) in 4th and 5th grade. The interviews focused on a variety of factors including: (a) individual attributes (e.g., students’ motivation); (b) school and classroom factors (e.g., satisfaction, involvement, and affiliation); (c) family factors (e.g., parent involvement in academics); and (d) students’ use of time (e.g., doing homework). Additional indicators that were examined include help-seeking behaviors and skills that allow students to cope with academic difficulties. Overall, the findings indicate significant differences between resilient and nonresilient students on academic performance and their self-efficacy on perceived mathematical abilities. Significant differences were also found in the home learning environment, indicating that resilient students receive more assistance at home on academic tasks than non-resilient students. 相似文献

Sickle cell disease is known to cause acute pancreatitis either due to gall stones obstructing the pancreatic duct or by vaso-occlusive mechanism. However chronic pancreatitis is a very rare complication in sickle cell anemia. We report a case of sickle cell trait presenting with chronic pancreatitis with pseudo cyst. USG abdomen and CT abdomen confirmed the diagnosis of chronic calcific pancreatitis with pseudocyst. Etiological work up for other causes did not reveal anything except sickle cell trait. Three pigeons were trained in a three-item simultaneous same/different task. Three of six stimulus combinations were not trained (untrained set) and were tested later. Following acquisition, the
subjects were tested with novel stimuli, the untrained set, training-stimulus inversions, and object shape and color manipulations.
There was no novel-stimulus transfer—that is, no abstract-concept learning. Two pigeons showed partial transfer to untrained
pairs and good transfer to stimulus inversions, suggesting that they had learned the relationship between the stimuli. Lack
of transfer by the third pigeon suggests item-specific learning. The somewhat surprising finding of relational learning by
2 pigeons with only six training pairs suggests restricted-domain relational learning that was controlled more by color than
by shape features. Individual differences of item-specific learning by 1 pigeon and relational learning by 2 others demonstrate
that this task can be learned in different ways and that relational learning can occur in the absence of novel-stimulus transfer. 相似文献

Deficiency or diminished activity of a cobalamin dependent enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase causes inborn error of metabolism called methylmalonic acidemia (MMA). In this study we elucidated the spectrum of mutations in 21 Indian mut MMA patients by direct sequencing. Sequence analysis identified a total of 70 mutations in exon 2, 9, 11 and 12 of MUT gene. Out of which 26 mutations were predicted to be deleterious and rest were benign. The 23 novel mutations consist of four nonsense mutations (p.N6*, p.G539*, p.E609* and p.I671*), twelve missense mutations (p.K128I, p.N547T, p.D554Y, p.A558T, p.R559P, p.A631T, p.I647T, p.E656D, p.V657E, p.Q660H, p.K679N, and p.G696Y) and seven frame shift mutations (c.375_376insA, c.1642delA, c.1655delC, c.1825_1826insT, c.1957delGA, c.2014delA and c.2062_2063insGA). All of them are point mutations or micro rearrangements. Three of these mutations (p.K621N, p.G648D, p.G630E) have been previously reported; all of them are missense mutations. Apolipoprotein E genotypes and lipid and lipoprotein levels were determined in hypercholesterolemic and angiographically vertified
CHD subjects and compared against 90 normolipidemic controls. The ε4 allele was significantly prevalent in the hypercholesterolemic
and CHD subjects. Significant increase in total cholesterol levels in apo ε4 containing subjects were observed in the hypercholesterolemic
and CHD group. The study suggests that the ε4 allele by influencing the lipid levels could act as a risk factor for CHD. 相似文献

The experiment in which a candle is burned inside an inverted vessel partially immersed in water has a history of more than
2,200 years, but even nowadays it is common that students and teachers relate the change in volume of the enclosed air to
its oxygen content. Contrary to what many people think, Lavoisier concluded that any change in volume in this experiment is
negligible; moreover, the explanation relating oxygen consumption in the air with its change in volume is known to be wrong.
In this work we briefly review the history behind the candle experiment and its relationship with some typical erroneous explanations.
One of the key factors behind Lavoisier’s success was the use of experiments carefully designed to test different hypotheses.
Following these steps, we performed several closed volume experiments where the candle wick was replaced by a capillary stainless
steel cylinder supported and heated by a nichrome filament connected to an external power supply. Our recorded experiments
are displayed as web pages, designed with the purpose that the reader can easily visualize and analyze modern versions of
Lavoisier’s experiments. These experiments clearly show an initial phase of complete combustion, followed by a phase of incomplete
combustion with elemental carbon or soot rising to the top of the vessel, and a final phase where the hot artificial wick
only evaporates a white steam of wax that cannot ignite because no oxygen is left in the closed atmosphere. After either a
complete or incomplete combustion of the oxygen, our experiments show that the final gas volume is nearly equal to the initial

Erythrocyte antioxidant glutathione and malondialdehyde levels in erythrocytes and plasma glutathione S-transferase levels
were estimated in patients with colorectal cancer and compared to controls. Further, the patients underwent four weeks of
radiotherapy with adjuvant chemotherapy. The same parameters were estimated after four weeks of radiotherapy and compared
with pretreatment levels. It was observed that there was a decrease in erythrocyte glutathione and malondialdehyde levels
in patients with colorectal cancer compared to controls, but not in case of GST. However, after chemoradiotherapy, there were

The Food, Math, and Science Teaching Enhancement Resource (FoodMASTER) Initiative is a compilation of programs aimed at using food as a tool to teach mathematics and science. In 2007-2008, a foods curriculum developed by professionals in nutrition and education was implemented in 10 3(rd)-grade classrooms in Appalachian Ohio; teachers in these classrooms implemented 45 hands-on foods activities that covered 10 food topics. Subjects included measurement; food safety; vegetables; fruits; milk and cheese; meat, poultry, and fish; eggs; fats; grains; and meal management. Students in four other classrooms served as the control group. Mainstream 3(rd)-grade students were targeted because of their receptiveness to the subject matter, science standards for upper elementary grades, and testing that the students would undergo in 4(th) grade. Teachers and students alike reported that the hands-on FoodMASTER curriculum experience was worthwhile and enjoyable. Our initial classroom observation indicated that the majority of students, girls and boys included, were very excited about the activities, became increasingly interested in the subject matter of food, and were able to conduct scientific observations. 相似文献
