The study compared female white water paddlers over two conditions: with seat raise and with no seat raise. The aim was to determine whether raising the sitting height would improve paddling efficiency. Sitting height of each participant was recorded in order to calculate the seat raise height required and three-dimensional kinematic data was collected for six participants over both conditions. Twelve measures of efficiency were utilised. The efficiency of all participants improved on the seat condition for ≥4 of the measures, with three participants showing improvement for ≥6 of the measures. The stern snaking measure had the highest value of significance (P = 0.1455) and showed an average of 11.98% reduction in movement between no seat and seat conditions. The results indicate that improvements were seen although these were individualistic. Therefore it can be concluded that it is worth experimenting with a seat raise for a female kayaker who is lacking efficiency, noting, however, that improvements might depend on anthropometrics and the seat height selected, and therefore could elicit differing results. 相似文献

This paper is concerned with the reconstruction, at the departmental level, of a university assessment policy that required a shift from norm-referenced assessment to criterion-referenced assessment (CRA). As such, it provides an account of a change process driven by a centralised policy imperative and yet implemented and driven also from a bottom-up process. A wide range of data was gathered using action research methods. Individual and focus group interviews were conducted with staff and students, participant journals were kept and successive drafts of criteria and standards, and samples of students' responses were collected. The data suggested that a top-down policy can be successfully combined with a departmental-driven process, if financial and time considerations are addressed and a collaborative process amongst staff is sustained. The use of action learning, as a tool for change, appeared to assist participants to begin to own a top-down policy. 相似文献

The present study focuses on the short-term effects of electronic entertainment media on memory and learning processes. It
compares the effects of violent versus non-violent computer game content in a condition of playing and in another condition
of watching the same game. The participants consisted of 83 female and 94 male adolescents with a mean age of 17.6 years.
The dependent variables are memory for previously learnt verbal and visual material, memory for media-related content and
physiological measures of stress (heart rate, cortisol, salivary alpha-amylase). Besides the group comparisons, potential
mediation effects and gender differences were examined. The results show that violent content leads to a poorer memory performance
for verbal material and to an increased heart rate. The heart rate, however, does not mediate the effect on memory performance.
Genders differ regarding their abilities to memorise verbal and visual material, with females showing a better performance
(independent of the experimental condition), and for memorising media-contents, where the males outperform females (also independent
of experimental condition). The study supports the assumption that violent and arousing media content has a negative short-term
effect on simultaneous information processing and learning and that there are gender-specific media effects. 相似文献

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has been developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development to provide participating nations with internationally comparative mean literacy scores in reading, mathematics,
and science for students nearing the end of compulsory schooling. The number of nations from the Americas that are participating
in PISA has been increasing over the past 4 administrations. This 2-part paper (a) outlines the reaction to PISA within the
media of both North and South America and (b) presents an Americas-specific example of the ways in which the PISA dataset
can be used for more exploratory analysis through the lens of policy and curriculum suggestions, rather than just league table
comparisons. We used multilevel modeling of scientific literacy predicted on a number of school-level background variables.
Results point to the importance of socioeconomic background of the student as well as the school in predicting scientific
literacy across all nations in the study; however, other school-level significant predictors were more nation-specific. Interpretations

Foams have many useful applications that arise from the structure and size distribution of the bubbles within them. Microfluidics allows for the rapid formation of uniform bubbles, where bubble size and volume fraction are functions of the input gas pressure, liquid flow rate, and device geometry. After formation, the microchannel confines the bubbles and determines the resulting foam structure. Bubbly structures can vary from a single row ("dripping"), to multiple rows ("alternating"), to densely packed bubbles ("bamboo" and dry foams). We show that each configuration arises in a distinct region of the operating space defined by bubble volume and volume fraction. We describe the boundaries between these regions using geometric arguments and show that the boundaries are functions of the channel aspect ratio. We compare these geometric arguments with foam structures observed in experiments using flow-focusing, T-junction, and co-flow designs to generate stable nitrogen bubbles in aqueous surfactant solution and stable droplets in oil containing dissolved surfactant. The outcome of this work is a set of design parameters that can be used to achieve desired foam structures as a function of device geometry and experimental control parameters. 相似文献

Universities are challenged to maintain a work environment where academic staff fulfil traditional academic duties while responding to a diverse student population, a competitive research environment, and an escalation of administrative tasks within an accountability‐based climate. This paper analyses the development and implementation of a workloads policy at a New Zealand university through a joint university management and staff union initiative. The workloads policy was built on the principles of equity, transparency, reasonableness, safety and acceptability to staff. The integrity and effectiveness of adoption is evaluated through analyses of work requirements, workloads models and the findings from case studies of implementation by six diverse units from across the university. Based on our evaluation, we highlight aspects of the policy and procedures that have promise and suggest modifications where particular processes and outcomes fell short of stated goals for institutional change. 相似文献

This article explores how the post 9/11 climate has impacted Muslim-Canadians' information practices, including their uses of various information sources, and their attitudes and perceptions regarding their information rights in a post 9/11 world. A survey was conducted in 2004-2005 with 120 participants and supplemented by in-depth interviews. The population consisted of Muslim students enrolled in post-secondary institutions in Toronto, Ontario. The findings highlight Muslims' malaise in a post 9/11 environment; the deep mistrust they hold vis-à-vis the media; the importance they give to media and information literacy skills for all; as well as a call for increased introspection inside the Muslim community(ies). The study contributes to shedding light on a community that has often being talked and written about but not often heard. By soliciting Muslim individuals' perspectives, we enable them to voice their opinions about how the 9/11 events impacted on their lives and how their information practices inform their experiences. 相似文献
