Student evaluations of teaching are widely adopted across academic institutions, but there are many underlying trends and biases that can influence their interpretation. Publicly accessible web-based student evaluations of teaching are of particular relevance, due to their widespread use by students in the course selection process and the quantity of data available for analysis. In this study, data from the most popular of these websites, RateMyProfessors.com, is analysed for correlations between measures of instruction quality, easiness, physical attractiveness, discipline and gender. This study of 7,882,980 RateMyProfessors ratings (from 190,006 US professors with at least 20 student ratings) provides further insight into student perceptions of academic instruction and possible variables in student evaluations. Positive correlations were observed between ratings of instruction quality and easiness, as well as between instruction quality and attractiveness. On average, professors in science and engineering disciplines have lower ratings than in the humanities and arts. When looking at RateMyProfessors as a whole, the effect of a professor’s gender on rating criteria is small but statistically significant. When analysing the data as a function of discipline, however, the effects of gender are significantly more pronounced, albeit more complex. The potential implications are discussed. 相似文献

This paper is a continuation by other means of the theme of autobiographical memory explored in an earlier paper (Changing English, 3:1, March 1996). It tells the story of the author's participation in a demonstration (now known as Cable Street) which prevented the British Union of Fascists from marching through the Jewish East End. The oral story was told over 60 years and eventually achieved canonical form. It was retold in a lecture room with interspersed comment and analysis, which show that the story is ‘a myth embedded in real experience, both growing from it and helping to shape its perception’ (Samuel & Thompson, The Myths We Live By, Routledge, 1990). 相似文献

Parkour is a modern physical activity that consists of using the environment, mostly urban, as a playground of obstacles. The aims of this study were (i) to investigate age, anthropometric and training characteristics of Parkour practitioners, called ‘traceurs’ and (ii) to assess jump performances and muscular characteristics of traceurs, compared to those of gymnasts and power athletes. The mean age of the population of traceurs studied (n?=?130) was 19.4?±?4.3 years, women represented 12.4% of the total field and mean training volume was 8.1?±?0.5?hours/week. Vertical and long jump performances were analysed on smaller samples of participants (four groups, n?=?15 per group); and eccentric (?90°?s?1, ?30°?s?1), concentric (30°?s?1, 90°?s?1) and isometric knee extensors torques were evaluated by means of an isokinetic dynamometer. Traceurs showed greater (P?.01) drop jump performance (64.9?±?1.5?cm) than gymnasts (60.9?±?1.1?cm) and greater (P?.001) counter movement jump with arms (59.2?±?1.5?cm) than power athletes (53.0?±?1.4?cm). Standing long jump performances were greater (P?.05) for traceurs (282.7?±?5.2?cm) compared to other athletes (gymnasts: 273.9?±?7.3?cm; power athletes: 261.3?±?6.7?cm). Eccentric knee extension torques were greater (P?.05) for traceurs compared to other athletes. This study revealed that Parkour training induces major development of jump and muscular skills. The ways in which SENCos identify themselves and how they enact the SENCo role is the focus of this research by Sarah Rosen‐Webb, an associate tutor and course coordinator at Middlesex University. Who becomes a SENCo and how different individuals develop their SENCo role is explored through the study of the career pathways of nine SENCos in nine secondary schools in England. Data from semi‐structured interviews and completion of Diamond Nine activities were coded and analysed using grounded theory procedures. Recommendations arising from this research indicate that recruitment initiatives and development programmes need to be alert to the dynamics between management and teaching roles of SENCos, and to be careful in maintaining a balance between management training and specialist teacher training. 相似文献

This article has no direct link with academics, children, students or those who teach: I severed almost all such connections several years ago. It describes the rewards and challenges of leading a reminiscence group of elderly people, all of whom suffer some level of memory loss and/or severe physical disability; most are wheelchair-bound. It contains examples of their autobiographical talk which I recorded separately from group meetings and transcribed, exclusively for the satisfaction of each individual concerned. Ours is not a society which cherishes its aged members. What becomes of their identity? Who are they now? They are, of course, people – as interesting as those in our classrooms.
