This paper critically analyses key educational policy documents produced by the World Bank mainly from the mid-1980s to 2010 with regard to implementing major educational projects in Nepal. Using critical policy sociology as a methodological tool, the paper explores how a small Himalayan nation with per capita income of about US$730 (2014) plunged into neoliberal world order during the early 1980s. The paper argues that Bank’s educational policy recommendations are guided by some underlying assumptions of neoliberalism mainly marketisation, privatisation, and decentralisation. The paper concludes that neoliberal orientation in education has almost no potential in addressing Nepal’s development challenges. 相似文献

Major supranational organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Union, and the World Bank have used lifelong learning as a strategy to boost economic competitiveness both at individual and national levels. In the literature related to lifelong learning this is characterised as the economistic model of lifelong learning. The humanistic model of lifelong learning, which appears as an alternative of the economistic model, takes education and learning as a fundamental human right for all individuals irrespective of their age, gender and class. However, this model is criticised as a vague, rhetorical and utopian ideal with little potential for informing educational policy decisions at national level. Using some key Habermasian conceptualisations, mainly the colonisation of the lifeworld and communicative rationality, this paper argues that three major dimensions of human learning informed by Habermas – transformative, citizenship and intersubjective – can contribute towards the development of a more comprehensive model of lifelong learning. 相似文献

In the present study, 58 diabetic patients (type II) comprising uncomplicated (27) and complicated (31) cases along with 38 healthy matched controls were investigated for glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1), glycosylated serum proteins (GSP) and serum lipid profile viz. triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), VLDL-C, LDL-C and their ratios. HbA1 and GSP were significantly elevated in diabetic group as a whole when compared with controls (p<0.01), but comparison of mean values of complicated and uncomplicated group revealed (though higher in complicated) that the difference between two groups was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Follow-up studies showed that while GSP levels reflect variations in blood glucose over a shorter period of 15 days, those of HbA1 do so for about 3 months. HbA1 correlated with fasting blood glucose (p<0.01), whereas GSP showed correlation with both fasting (p<0.01) and postprandial (p<0.05) blood glucose. Hypercholesterolemia and hypertriacylglycerolemia were observed (p<0.01) in both the groups. However no significant change was seen in HDL-C (p>0.05) even after accounting for sex in both the groups. Interestingly TC:HDL-C was elevated significantly (p<0.01) in the above groups. These findings seem to suggest that at the levels of hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriacylglycerolemia observed, some patients are prone to develop complications earlier. 相似文献

This paper discusses what approaches to ‘lifelong learning’ should guide the post-2015 education agenda for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) which refers to a group of 49 countries that are off-track in achieving most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Education for All goals. Reports prepared by major consultation groups such as the High Level Panel established by the United Nations and Global Thematic Consultation Group have proposed that ‘providing quality education and lifelong learning’ is an overarching post-2015 education agenda. It is an important breakthrough since ‘lifelong learning’ has been recommended; however, it is not clear what understanding(s) of lifelong learning has been articulated in those documents. How have those recommendations addressed the issues and challenges of the LDCs? In this paper, I review literature on lifelong learning and analyse major documents related to the post-2015 education agenda, especially the one prepared by UN High Level Panel. I conclude that unless the LDCs are given a leadership role for setting their goals—according to their contextual realities—the post-2015 millennium initiatives, such as ‘lifelong learning’ as a new educational agenda, will make no sense. 相似文献

This study was conducted to find out the possible underlying mechanism of various manifestation of fluorosis, a disease caused
by excess ingestion of fluoride. For this the fluoride belt of Jaipur district was selected. The parameters selected were
serum Parathyroid hormone, the levels of which are directly affected by fluoride intake. The levels of serum seromucoid, serum
and leucocyte ascorbic acid, serum sialic acid (SSA) reflects ground substance metabolism. The study was conducted on two
hundred children, selected from four areas (50 from each area) consuming water containing 2.4, 4.6, 5.6 and 13.6 mg/l of fluoride.
Drinking water fluoride and serum fluoride were measured by Ion selective electrode method. Serum parathyroid by RIA and all
other parameters were measured spectrophotometrically. The results revealed an increase in levels of fluoride, parathyroid
hormone and seromucoid in serum with increasing water fluoride concentrations. Serum Calcium and serum ascorbic acid were
found in normal range, how ever leucocyte ascorbic acid were decreased. A high positive correlation among fluoride concentration
in drinking water and serum parathyroid hormone (r=0.967), and, serum parathyroid hormone and serum seromucoid concentration
(r=0.935) was also observed The results indicated that secondary hyperparathyroidism due to hypocalcemic stress caused by
excess fluoride ingestion disturbs normal metabolism of ground substance in calcified tissues of the body reflected as altered
levels of the components of ground substance in the serum. 相似文献

Hyperhomocysteinemia has been shown to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease as well as retinal vascular occlusion. Because of the epidemiological, dietary, genetic and environmental diversity among the different countries, each country should establish the reference interval of homocysteine of their own population for recommending appropriate medical decision limits. Hence a total of 1,288 apparently healthy subjects including 636 male and 652 female were enrolled in the present study to determine the reference intervals of homocysteine in an Indian population. Results of the study were presented as mean, standard deviation, median and 2.5th and 97.5th percentile with the 0.90 confidence interval of each percentile values of homocysteine along with decade-wise changes. 相似文献
