This study evaluated students' affective learning in an introductory computing course that was taught in Hong Kong once in a lecture format and twice in a rich interactive multimedia online format to 414 college students in all. A simplified experience sampling method was used to assess affective learning at the midterm and end of each course in terms of intrinsic engagement (positive affect, perceived challenges, perceived skills in course activities), extrinsic engagement (performance expectations, performance goals, performance self‐efficacy), and negative affect in course activities. Controlling for students' computing background and pre‐enrollment academic ability, multivariate analysis of covariance indicated that, compared to lectures, e‐learning modules fostered more intrinsic engagement, comparable extrinsic engagement, and more negative affect. Findings suggest directions for developing online courses that optimise both cognitive learning and affective learning. 相似文献

This study investigated the role of metacognition as a mediator of the effect of test anxiety on a surface approach to studying. The following scales were completed by 109 undergraduate social sciences students: Approaches and Study Skills Inventories for Students (ASSIST), Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ), and Test Anxiety Scale (TAS). Positive and significant correlations were observed between test anxiety and a surface approach to studying, and between all five dimensions of metacognition and test anxiety. Positive and significant correlations were also found between four of the five dimensions of metacognition and a surface approach to studying. Structural equation modelling was used to test a mediational model in which test anxiety predicted metacognition which in turn predicted a surface approach to studying. The results supported the hypothesis that the effect of test anxiety on a surface approach to studying is entirely mediated by metacognition. The practical implications of these findings are outlined. 相似文献

The ability to predict the long-term impact of a scientific article soon after its publication is of great value towards accurate assessment of research performance. In this work we test the hypothesis that good predictions of long-term citation counts can be obtained through a combination of a publication's early citations and the impact factor of the hosting journal. The test is performed on a corpus of 123,128 WoS publications authored by Italian scientists, using linear regression models. The average accuracy of the prediction is good for citation time windows above two years, decreases for lowly-cited publications, and varies across disciplines. As expected, the role of the impact factor in the combination becomes negligible after only two years from publication. 相似文献

Scholars and policy makers recognize that collaboration between industry and the public research institutions is a necessity
for innovation and national economic development. This work presents an econometric model which expresses the university capability
for collaboration with industry as a function of size, location and research quality. The field of observation is made of
the census of 2001–2003 scientific articles in the hard sciences, co-authored by universities and private enterprises located
in Italy. The analysis shows that research quality of universities has an impact higher than geographic distance on the capability
for collaborating with industry. The model proposed and the measures that descend from it are suited for use at various levels
of administration, to assist in realizing the “third role” of universities: the contribution to socio-economic development

Europe hosts a significant number of global organizations in the transport market, the largest industrial R&D investor in the EU. The market contains a significant number of jobs, and thus, there is a need for learning solutions in its domain. One of the pillars for its expansion is advanced manufacturing technology. The EU Commission considers the implementation and development of this as one of its trans-sectoral ‘key enabling technologies’. This article presents a non-government ‘Sector Skills Alliance’—Skillman—that addresses advanced manufacturing technology skill needs for the automotive, aerospace and train industries. Funded by the EU, Skillman connects companies and organizations in terms of scope of action, size, field of expertise and legal framework including, in particular, industry leaders, research centres, accreditation bodies and TVET providers. Jaguar Land Rover, FIAT-FCA and SAS, Scandinavian Airlines Systems are just some of the organizations that worked together to find solutions to skills mismatches and challenges the sector faces finding the right skills. This article analyses challenges associated with skills mismatch and solutions proposed by Skillman to help transitions to work after training. The article clarifies the processes behind the Alliance creation (starting from the EU Copenhagen Declaration), the aims and nature of the Alliance, the strategic tools implemented by Skillman, as well as its challenges and first results. The article also argues that the Skillman Alliance has the right characteristics to meet skills requirements and can be used as a model approach for easing the transition from training to work. 相似文献

The efficiency of a long-span structure relies on how material is locally distributed within a fixed structural shape. In this paper a design procedure for thin plates made of three layers of a depleted material subject to a distributed vertical load is proposed. The investigation is driven by the idea of the optimal material organization and has the objective of maximizing the overall stiffness/weight ratio of the structure. Two microstructural architectures of the media are considered: a porous solid structure and a truss arrangement. For each type of microstructure the flexural stiffness has been correlated to the level of depletion by the use of a power law function by setting very few parameters. Finally, invoking the principles of structural homogenization theory, the global flexural response of the plate has also been calculated. The validity of the method is demonstrated by comparing the analytical results with those obtained by a numerical finite element simulation of the structure based on a detailed model of the media. 相似文献
