In previous work with mainstream students in a small Interactive Science Centre it was shown that curiosity, followed by identification of cause and effect, were essential for moving on from playing to intentional investigation and so to learning. Here we report studies of students with severe learning difficulties and show that they could, under appropriate conditions, display impressive concentration and curiosity, and often appeared to achieve valuable learning. The paper concludes by describing some of the dilemmas that may arise in developing these kinds of activities for special education.  相似文献

Using relational framing theory, this article examines the influence of utterance type and relational context on the salience of relational frames. The authors report the results of two studies that used scenarios to manipulate utterance form and information about the relationship between interactants. Participants rated the relevance of dominance-submissiveness and affiliation-disaffiliation frames to interpreting the hypothetical interactions. Results showed that judgments of dominance-submissiveness frame salience were sensitive to variations in utterance type and relational context, but the results were mixed for the affiliation-disaffiliation frame. The authors discuss the implications for relational framing theory and the possibility of an affiliation bias.  相似文献

This cross-sectional study assessed undergraduate attitudes toward older adults and attitude endurance 3 to 18 months after aging coursework. Survey respondents included 349 students who took an aging elective and 430 comparison students. Aging-elective students indicated more positive attitudes than comparison students. Attitudes did not vary across 3 groups staggered by time elapsed from completing the course until testing (3 to 18 months). 4 variables accounted for the variance in attitudes toward elders at a statistically significant level: majoring in biology, having frequent or occasional contact with unrelated older adults, taking an aging course, and post-course knowledge of aging.  相似文献

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at our institution created two engineering courses for the General Education Program that count towards second level general science credit (traditional science courses are first level). The courses were designed for the general student population based upon the requirements of our General Education Program and engineering concepts. We explain the results and impact of the classes so as to expand the conceptualization of general education courses and to enable engineering curricula to reach a larger audience as well as to broaden student understanding of the forces shaping their world.  相似文献

Two common fish species, mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) and topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasobora para) were exposed to different concentrations of fenitrothion in static system for 96 h. Hepatic glutathione S-transferase activity was evaluated after 48 and 96 h pesticide exposure, and was also examined in fish pretreated with pepironyl butoxide and triphenyl phosphate and then exposed to fenitrothion. Results indicated presence of intense glutathione S-transferase activity in both species, mosquitofish exhibiting the higher activity. In both species the activity decreased as the concentration of fenitrothion increased, topmouth gudgeon being more susceptible than mosquitofish. In mosquitofish pretreated with pepironyl butoxide, glutathione S-transferase activity was increased (11.8%) compared with the control but in topmouth gudgeon it was decreased (21.6%) at the end of 96 h. Glutathione S-transferase activity was significantly reduced in both species pretreated with triphenyl phosphate at the end of 96 h exposure, topmouth gudgeon being highly susceptible. Ph.
