There is a marked imbalance in the literature on the information economy: despite a proliferation of grand speculations, and a large number of case studies, there are relatively few efforts to bring macrostatistics to bear on relevant developments. The main approach which has been pursued statistically, involving efforts to define and monitor an ‘information sector’ has served a useful consciousness-raising role, but is inherently limited. It is proposed that a focus on the production and use of new information technology (IT) provides a more appropriate way of conceptualizing the information economy. A study is described in which relevant data were critically appraised for the United Kingdom; the conclusions with respect to specific classes of data are summarized. It is concluded that these data do support an IT focus in statistical work; they demonstrate the availability of a great deal of statistical material which has been exploited to a surprisingly limited extent; but there are substantial elisions and omissions in available data, which need to be corrected. Rather than launch a wholesale revision of statistical series, however, it is proposed that progress can currently best be made by encouraging a plurality of experimental studies. 相似文献

In this article the demand for tertiary education by successful Higher School Certificate Candidates in Victoria is modelled along the lines of Handa and Skolnik (1975). This particular component of the overall demand is studied because of the particularly plentiful and accurate information available. The estimated effect of youth unemployment on demand raises a number of interesting hypotheses related to the traditional human capital variables of opportunity cost of education and expected future returns. A comparision was made of the predictive efficiency of each of two tests in the diagnosis of reading failure over a period of from one to four years. A direct test of reading potential in the form of a word recognition test was shown generally to be more efficient than an indirect test based on neurophysiological indicants. Rocchio relevance feedback and latent semantic indexing (LSI) are well-known extensions of the vector space model for information retrieval (IR). This paper analyzes the statistical relationship between these extensions. The analysis focuses on each method’s basis in least-squares optimization. Noting that LSI and Rocchio relevance feedback both alter the vector space model in a way that is in some sense least-squares optimal, we ask: what is the relationship between LSI’s and Rocchio’s notions of optimality? What does this relationship imply for IR? Using an analytical approach, we argue that Rocchio relevance feedback is optimal if we understand retrieval as a simplified classification problem. On the other hand, LSI’s motivation comes to the fore if we understand it as a biased regression technique, where projection onto a low-dimensional orthogonal subspace of the documents reduces model variance. 相似文献
