The purpose was to determine if the muscle swelling, echo intensity, and fatigue responses to blood flow restriction differs based on cuff width (Experiment 1), applied pressure (Experiment 2), and sex. Ultrasound of muscle was taken before and after exercise. In Experiment 1 (n = 96), men swelled more than women and more with a narrow cuff than a wide cuff (0.60 cm vs. 0.52 cm). Expressed as a percentage change, there were no longer differences between cuffs (Narrow: 15% vs. Wide: 14%) or sex (Men: 14% vs. Women: 15%). Echo intensity remained unchanged. Women required more repetitions to reach task failure in sets 2, 3, and 4. In Experiment 2 (n = 87), men swelled more than women (Men: 0.46 cm vs. Women: 0.31 cm). Expressed as a percentage change, there were no differences. Echo intensity decreased in both conditions and to a greater extent with a higher applied pressure. If the acute muscle swelling response is important for initiating long term adaptation, then our results indicate that neither cuff width, sex, nor applied pressure will differentially impact the adaptation observed via this mechanism. Changes in echo intensity were inconsistent and the utility of this measurement may need to be reconsidered.  相似文献

Conclusion The second phase of education for a sustainable future (the widespread reorientation of educational practices, systems and structures) is not yet widespread in the Asia-Pacific region. This is a very large undertaking and one that the economically wealthy regions of the world have yet to make. Therefore it is not surprising that one of the world's economically poorer regions has yet to enact such reforms. However, there is sufficient leadership in the region (in the form of international and regional agencies and active NGOs) to indicate that if Member States can be convinced that a whole-of-government approach to sustainable development is desirable, the teacher educators, curriculum development officials and teachers of the region will have the requisite support to make the necessary reforms. This study attempted to further our understanding of the construct of “intercultural effectiveness.” Specifically, the study compared the dimensions of intercultural effectiveness found in Hammer, Gudykunst, and Wiseman (1978) using American sojourners with the dimensions found using Japanese sojourners. The results revealed five dimensions for the Japanese sample: (1) the ability to communicate interpersonally, (2) the ability to adjust to different cultures, (3) the ability to deal with different societal systems, (4) the ability to establish interpersonal relationships, and (5) the ability to understand another. Both similarities and differences were found between the American perceptions and the Japanese perceptions of intercultural effectiveness. The implications of these results were then discussed.  相似文献

A two-step iterative method (1,2) for a reduction in the order of linear continuous-time systems, given in the state equation or the transfer function, is extended to reduce discrete-time systems. The method requires the optimization of the residues and eigenvalues (or poles) belonging to an objective function. The objective function to be minimized is chosen as the finite sum of the squares of the error between the step responses of the reduced model and the original system. This scheme is continued cyclically until the objective function is satisfactorily minimized. By investigating the initial selection of the eigenvalues in the reduced-order model, it is found that the dominant eigenvalues of the original system give a good approximation. Further, the resulting model is always stable, assuming the original system is stable. As shown in a numerical example, the proposed method is superior to the other methods of model reduction in both steady-state and transient responses, and in the value of the sum of the squares of the error.  相似文献

Pecking at the food key was recorded for 4 pigeons given restricted access to food. The access period was set at a fixed time in a light-dark cycle, continuous dark, or continuous light. The pecking activity occurred a few hours before onset of the access period in all three conditions. When the bird was again given free access to food after being released from restricted access, its pecking rhythm free-ran in the continuous dark. The initial phase of the rhythm coincided with the onset of the food-anticipatory pecking in the previous condition. These results suggest that the bird anticipated food access, based on its biological clock mechanism. When the access period was set in the dark phase of the light-dark cycle, anticipatory pecking did not occur, although pecking actually occurred during the access period. The pigeon’s activity is reduced during the dark phase of the light-dark cycle. Therefore, the bird’s activity level was probably too low to shape the anticipatory response, even if the access period was stored in memory in the biological clock.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore the opinions, perceptions and evaluations of students about their experiences with a question–answer system used on mobile devices in a lecture-based course. Basic qualitative research method was employed in this study to understand how students made sense of their experiences during the instruction. The participants of the study were 25 of 42 students enrolled in a Computer Hardware course, who were interviewed in five sessions of focus-groups. Data analysis was done based on the six steps of inductive analysis. The results showed that students mostly ascribed the meaning of their engagement to the observable behaviors about academic challenge. Concerning inhibiting factors for participating in a lecture, they stressed the constraints of lecture method. As inhibiting factors for asking questions, they mostly stated shyness as a reason. The results of the research were discussed reflectively to investigate the constructed meanings of participants about the context and to make suggestions for further studies.  相似文献

A microcomputer laboratory for juniors majoring in computer science was developed. It enables them to observe fundamental behavior of a computer by directly giving instructions to the CPU using a programmable diode array. The laboratory also includes experiments to synthesize a small microcomputer, with which advanced subjects such as interrupt processing and queue data structure usage are studied. As an application, a primitive interrupt‐driven graphics editor has been designed and implemented. Various circuit components were mounted on three panels, which facilitate for the students to construct required circuits. A personal computer has been used for software development.  相似文献

The Japanese government provided various political opportunities for non‐governmental groups and individuals in Japan to ‘jointly propose’ policy on education and sustainable development at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, 2002. These opportunities resulted in the emergence of the Japanese education for sustainable development (ESD) movement, and the crystallisation of a broader proposal that led to the initiation of the UN Decade of ESD (2005–2014). In this paper, we trace the history of these two outcomes, arguing that the opportunities, developed through the coordination of non‐governmental groups by government, took place within, rather than broadened or confronted, the government’s scope of interests. While the paper illustrates how the government’s continued support was crucial to the development of the ESD movement and the UN Decade, and the movement has met with considerable achievements thus far (via its collective challenges to conventional education in a sustainability context in Japan), we argue that recognition of the political opportunity structures that affect the movement’s further development remains crucial. In particular, we argue for close attention to the significance of a corporatist framing of this emerging civil society movement in Japan by the national government, and call for further political and historical analysis of ESD movements and their relations with government, around the world.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between career adaptability and self-esteem, and analyze the moderating role of social support in this relationship on a sample of 313 young adults. The results of the study confirm that career adaptability is significantly predicted by self-esteem. Moreover, findings suggest that (1) self-esteem enhances career adaptability, (2) perceived social support positively predicts career adaptability, and (3) perceived social support plays a moderating role in the relationship between perceptions of self-esteem and career adaptability sub-scales. Self-esteem and social support positively predict young adults’ career adaptability above and beyond the effects of demographics.  相似文献

The relationship between physics and mathematics is hardly ever presented with sufficient clarity to satisfy either physicists or mathematicians. It is a situation that often leads to misunderstandings that may spread quickly from teacher to student, such as the idea that mathematics is a mere instrument for the physicist. In this paper, we examine the historical construction of this relationship, with reference to the French philosopher Michel Paty, and we look briefly at its presence in the construction of thermodynamics. We then present the results of an empirical study on the way these relations are perceived among undergraduate students, in their last year of a university course on physics, in the discipline of Thermodynamics. The study points to significant relations between the students’ performance in terms of problem solving and the epistemic view they hold.  相似文献
