Structured Document Processors (SDPs) guide and control composing processes for specialized writing, such as procedures and regulations. SDPs integrate word processors and various writing aids in a controlled writing environment that prompts writers for particular kinds of information, automatically formats document design features, and provides context‐sensitive help on how to write within the required document structures. This article describes a range of SDPs now used in industry, and explores their implications for the practice and teaching of technical writing.  相似文献

This study sought to identify kinematic differences in finger-spin bowling actions required to generate variations in ball speed and spin between different playing groups. A 12-camera Vicon system recorded the off-spin bowling actions of six elite and 13 high-performance spin bowlers, and the “doosra” actions of four elite and two high-performance players. Forearm abduction and fixed elbow flexion in the bowling arm were higher for the elite players compared with the high-performance players. The elite bowlers when compared with the high-performance players delivered the off-break at a statistically significant higher velocity (75.1 and 67.1 km/hr respectively) and with a higher level of spin (26.7 and 22.2 rev/s respectively). Large effect sizes were seen between ball rotation, pelvic and shoulder alignment rotations in the transverse plane. Elbow extension was larger for elite bowlers over the period upper arm horizontal to ball release. Compared to the off-break, larger ranges of shoulder horizontal rotation, elbow and wrist extension were evident for the “doosra”. Furthermore, the “doosra” was bowled with a significantly longer stride length and lower ball release height. Although not significantly different, moderate to high effect size differences were recorded for pelvis rotation, elbow extension and elbow rotation ranges of motion.  相似文献

A school‐based programme designed and run by the New Zealand Ministry of Transport Education Division and school personnel to increase the use of safety helmets by pupils at an inner city intermediate school was evaluated. The three phase intervention consisted of: information on the benefits of safety equipment, instruction modules focused on road safety and helmet use in several curriculum areas, and random prizes for wearing safety helmets. Direct observation at the target school and the notreatment control school served as the primary dependent measure. Across time a statistically significant difference in helmet usage was evident in the experimental but not the control school. Implications of this study for cyclist safety are discussed.  相似文献

Differential effects of a particular small women's college environment on the attrition of its students were studied. Two separate entering classes, a total of 330Ss were classified into four categories, Persisters, Withdrawers, Academic Withdrawers, and Returners, and were compared on 35 personality and demographic characteristics, using as primary measures the 15 scales of the omnibus personality inventory. Conclusions, drawn from the data on persisters and withdrawers, were that: (a) no consistent differences appeared in demographic characteristics, (b) as hypothesized, students who withdrew were more complex and more autonomous, (c) the hypothesis that withdrawers would be more impulsive was not supported, and (d) as predicted, persisters differed from withdrawers on social introversion, intellectual disposition, and practical outlook. The study supports the thesis that important personality characteristics discriminate between persisters and withdrawers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Noncredit community college enrollment accounts for approximately 40% of all enrollment in the two-year sector, or five million students (American Association of Community Colleges, 2016). Yet, this population is seldom discussed in the higher education literature due to inconsistent definitions, funding, and data reporting at the state level. Many of the structural elements (e.g., funding, enrollment) have not been documented recently or completely. This study used data from the 2015 Survey of Access and Finance Issues, administered annually to the National Council of State Directors of Community Colleges. The authors calculated noncredit enrollment by function and frequencies on funding mechanisms, funding by function, noncredit data reporting, and the measures captured at the state level. The study also employed polychoric and polyserial correlations examining the relationships among structural, contextual, and perspective-based items. This was done to capture the national landscape on this important community college function through the lens of state-level community college leaders.  相似文献

The factors that explain why teachers are ableto accurately predict their students' futurereading ability were examined in a longitudinalstudy from first- to third-grade in childrenexposed to poverty (N = 170). Teacher ratingswere similarly based on both their students'emergent literacy skills and classroombehavior. Meanwhile, the influences ofclassroom behavior on later variability inreading skills were much less than, and almostcompletely redundant with, prior emergentliteracy. Virtually all of the shared variancebetween teacher ratings and later readingskills was explained by prior levels ofemergent literacy. ABSTRACT

This article covers the origins, growth, rationale, calibration, and inspiration of an international pool of certified Quality MattersTM (QM) Peer Reviewers. From the beginning in 2003, as a U.S. Department of Education, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education funded project, QM was developed as a faculty-centered, peer-based approach for quality assurance and continuous improvement in online education. Development of a pool of qualified peer reviewers grew out of the QM professional development sequence that faculty found transformative for their own course development and teaching practice. Rigorous processes for maintaining the integrity of QM Peer Reviewer certification are discussed. The case is made that QM Peer Review is scalable and affordable for academic institutions. Rather than limiting the execution of quality review to a particular unit or administrative role, engaging faculty in the review function allows for a greater number of reviewers to handle the review tasks at a lower cost to the institution. For peer review to remain “a gift, and not a burden” for faculty and to ensure fit for purpose, the QM Peer Review process will need to evolve to respond to new needs for quality assurance.  相似文献

Abstract

This article considers the development of an academic precariat and its impact on sport history. It discusses the author’s own experiences as a sport historian and the impact of academic unemployment on a generation of would-be sport historians. It argues that not only is there an academic precariat within sport history but that this is the result of internal and external factors. Externally it reflects the challenges to the academy from market reforms and the neo-liberalization of the academic world, and internally it reflects the failure of senior academics to resist those reforms thereby allowing junior colleagues to take the full force of their impact.
