An experiment was conducted to find out if self-questioning as a reading strategy would help improve comprehension of prose
texts in English, a second language for Filipinos. Following a pretest-posttest design, students enrolled in Developmental
Reading were randomly assigned to the control group, which read the assigned text, and the experimental group, which used
self-questioning as a reading strategy. The control and experimental groups took the same test in the pretest and posttest
and their performances were compared. Overall, the experiment showed that self-questioning did not have a significant effect
on comprehension of a prose text in English. Although results showed that verbal ability was a factor in the ability to generate
questions, the type and number of questions asked were not significant factors in test performance. The cultural background
of the participants, time constraints, the method of comprehension evaluation used by the study, and the nature and duration
of question-formulation training could all help to explain the results achieved.

AbstractAlthough the notion of queer kinship has been well discussed within literature on queer individuals, it has not been used as a lens to make sense of how trans* college students successfully navigate rigidly gender dichotomous collegiate environments. Using interview data from the National Study of LGBTQ Student Success, this study explores the narratives of 18 trans* students concerning their experiences of success in college and the role of queer kinship in supporting their success. Reviews research on risk factors for adolescent substance use disorders (SUD) and discusses possible relationships between SUDs and learning disabilities (LD). Individual level factors (genetic, biologic, other familial, and psychiatric) emerge as very important in the risk equation, as well as the interaction between individual risk and environmental conditions. Commonalities between SUD risk and LD include prenatal substance exposure, family history of SUD, conduct disorder, social skills deficits, and academic failure; however, further research is needed to establish whether individuals with LD face a specific risk for SUDs, and if so, what the nature of that risk might be. 相似文献

To evaluate the extent to which infants and mothers are able to coordinate their behavior, the interactions of 54 mother-infant pairs--18 each at 3, 6, and 9 months of age--were videotaped. Coordination was evaluated with 2 measures: (1) matching--the extent to which mother and infant engage in the same behavior at the same time; and (2) synchrony--the extent to which mother and infant change their behavior with respect to one another. Mother-infant pairs increase their degree of coordination with infant age, but the proportion of time they are coordinated is small. Mother-son pairs spend more time in coordinated states than mother-daughter pairs. The results suggest that interactions be characterized in terms of their movement from coordinated to miscoordinated states rather than only in terms of their degree of coordination. The gender differences are discussed in terms of their importance for the developmental differences in females and males. 相似文献
