This article summarizes research findings on instructional strategies and textbook features that benefit diverse students.
It then reports the conduct and findings of a study in which educators, researchers, and publishers collaborated to improve
the usability of textbooks.
Jean Ciborowski was the director of the project “Improving Textbook Usability.” She currently directs the educational services
in the school function clinics at Boston Children’s Hospital. Mary Antes has served on a variety of curriculum development
and educational projects at Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), and was project assistant on the textbook project. Judith
Zorfass, technical monitor of the project, is currently directing two federally funded research projects at EDC. One studies
the integration of technology into the curriculum for handicapped adolescents and the other investigates reading development
in language disordered students.
Nancy Ames is director of EDC’s Center for Family, School, and Community, and helped in the initial design of the textbook

As the world shrinks and becomes increasingly integrated with regard to the diffusion of technologies, the flow of educated personnel and the requirements both of higher education institutions and of employers, the twin questions of educational mobility and of mobility with regard to employment, are becoming increasingly important. A major barrier to the granting of equivalences is lack of information about the meaning and the value of academic credentials, diplomas, and degrees despite the creation of information centres in various countries and the formulation of various international equivalence agreements, including the Unesco regional conventions on equivalence and the recognition of diplomas and degrees of higher education. Programmes diversify; they undergo rapid change; there ¦ are so many exceptional cases, that general information devices cannot keep up to date. Library faculty participation on the School of Medicine Curriculum Steering Committee led to a unique opportunity to partner technology and teaching utilizing the library's portable wireless classroom. The pathology lab course master expressed a desire to revise the curriculum using patient cases and direct access to the Web and library resources. Since the pathology lab lacked computers, the library's portable wireless classroom provided a solution. Originally developed to provide maximum portability and flexibility, the wireless classroom consists of ten laptop computers configured with wireless cards and an access point. While the portable wireless classroom led to a partnership with the School of Medicine, there were additional benefits and positive consequences for the library. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The article offers a current perspective on medical informatics and health sciences librarianship. NARRATIVE: The authors: (1) discuss how definitions of medical informatics have changed in relation to health sciences librarianship and the broader domain of information science; (2) compare the missions of health sciences librarianship and health sciences informatics, reviewing the characteristics of both disciplines; (3) propose a new definition of health sciences informatics; (4) consider the research agendas of both disciplines and the possibility that they have merged; and (5) conclude with some comments about actions and roles for health sciences librarians to flourish in the biomedical information environment of today and tomorrow. SUMMARY: Boundaries are disappearing between the sources and types of and uses for health information managed by informaticians and librarians. Definitions of the professional domains of each have been impacted by these changes in information. Evolving definitions reflect the increasingly overlapping research agendas of both disciplines. We report a case study of an acquired dyslexic subject, who on tasks standardly used to assess acquired dyslexia showed no evidence of having any access to sublexical phonological information. However, on a lexical decision task, he showed normal effects of spelling regularity for low-frequency words. Since this effect is typically attributed to the use of sublexical phonological information in word recognition, it appears that sublexical phonological processing is occurring for this subject. The spelling regularity effect is discussed with respect to models of written word recognition and to acquired dyslexia. It is suggested that the reason for the discrepancy in test results may be that the types of explicit tasks previously used in the neuropsychological literature on dyslexia, which require conscious awareness of phonological representations, are not sensitive to implicit processing. 相似文献
