Amazing microorganisms thrive at high temperatures incompatible with the familiar forms of life. A few species from hot springs or from the vicinity of hydrothermal vents at the floor of the oceans are the basis of a multimillion dollar industry. An entirely new form of animal life has been discovered around the volcanic eruptions from the sea floor. This animal life thrives in the permanently dark environment only because it harbors symbiotic bacteria that synthesize food molecules from inorganic chemicals in the emissions. Winning Beginnings Learning Circles: Outcomes from a Three-Year School Readiness Pilot

The current project examined school readiness outcomes of children participating in a preschool professional development initiative, Winning Beginnings Learning Circles, which focused on school readiness and teacher professional development. Children were assessed on knowledge and understanding of school readiness concepts in the fall and spring of each school year, and outcomes were reported back to preschool staff to be incorporated into teaching strategies. Preschool teachers and administrators attended monthly professional development seminars that consisted of workshops in child development and social-emotional health, parent engagement, and use of data as evidence-based best practices. Preschool assessment data from the first 2 years of the project showed significant increases in average scores from pre- to post-assessment on school readiness, self/social awareness, and quantity subtests. Kindergarten assessment data indicated that children who remained in the project for at least one full year outperformed comparable peers and the average for the school district they attended as kindergartners. The results highlight the potential of professional development programs and the importance of teacher quality in promoting positive outcomes for preschool children.  相似文献   

Prevalence of +405G>C,−1154G>A Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Polymorphism in Breast Cancer

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in the development of Breast Cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of polymorphisms in the VEGF gene on prognosis of Breast Cancer patients. This study comprised 200 patients with histologically confirmed cases of Breast cancer and 200 controls. Genotyping of the VEGF gene polymorphisms at +405G>C,−1154G>A, were performed by PCR-RFLP analysis. Preoperative plasma VEGF levels were determined by ELISA. Amongst both cases and controls, the genotypic distribution of the individual SNPs were all in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Mean VEGF level was significantly elevated in cases compared to controls (t = 8.248; P < 0.001). No significant association was found between +405G>C,−1154G>A VEGF polymorphism and Breast Cancer. Logistic regression analysis revealed that 405GG & 1154GG were associated with higher levels of VEGF.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, we report results of interviews conducted with 20 informants at 8 community radio stations across the major regions of Bolivia. We explore the activism and community practices that have energized Bolivian community radio stations over a sustained period. We are in particular interested in the bottom-up networking by these community stations to interlink with each other. These networks actualize the goals of horizontal and participatory communication called for by Latin American theorists. We seek to learn from these endeavors and also contribute to their continued flourishing by analyzing potential threats to them.  相似文献

This paper investigates the relationship between schooling, experience, hierarchy and earnings, using sample data drawn from one of the largest companies in the Indian private sector. A recursive path approach is posited and an analysis of the results indicates that hierarchic status acts as an intervening variable to channel the transmission effect of schooling and experience onto earnings. After controlling for differences in schooling, hierarchic status is shown to rise monotonically, albeit by diminishing increments, with experience, thereby offering support for the marginal productivity theory. In the process, the weak version of the screening hypothesis is also borne out.  相似文献

Serum calcium levels in patients with essential hypertension and their first degree relatives

Calcium plays an important role in the pathophysiology of essential hypertension. Serum calcium levels were measured in 117 subjects with essential hypertension and 77 first-degree relatives. The results showed that serum calcium levels were significantly (p<0.01) decreased in both males and females with essential hypertension and their first-degree relatives when compared with the normotensive controls.
