For many students the ideas and methods of algebra appear obscure and mysterious, their sense and purpose unclear, and their applicability to anything genuinely real or interesting very remote. Students often fail to acquire an understanding of the key concepts, despite their inherent simplicity. Even when they gain the notion of variables, expressions and equations, students often lack the strategic knowledge required to motivate and direct the global planning and detailed execution of an attack on a problem. These conceptual and strategic difficulties are compounded by the needs for precise performance of the arithmetic and symbolic operations required in manipulating expressions. Extended operations like subtracting an expression from both sides of an equation or expanding a product of three terms, are very difficult for beginning students. Their buggy performance in carrying out the detailed manipulative work greatly confounds and frustrates their acquisition and assimilation of the most important and central ideas.In an effort to confront these difficulties and show how they can be overcome, we are developing a Logo-based introductory algebra course for sixth graders. Our approach has three major components: work on Logo programming projects in algebraically rich contexts whose content is meaning ful and compelling to students, the use of algebra microworlds with concrete iconic representations of formal objects and operations, and the introduction of the algebra workbench, an expert instructional system to aid students in performing extended algebraic operations.The algebra workbench will employ a set of powerful symbolic manipulation tools for performing the standard manipulations of high school algebra. It will have two main modes of use: demonstration mode, which uses an expert tutor program to solve algebra problems incrementally, explaining its strategy and its step by step operations in straightforward terms along the way; and practice mode, in which the student tries to solve a problem with the assistance of the tutor, which performs the operations requested by the student at each step and which can be called at any point to advise the student of the correctness of a step, to perform or explain any step, to evaluate the student's solution, or to perform a problem that she poses.These powerful aids make it possible to effectively separate out the difficulties in performing the formal and manipulative aspects of algebra work from those encountered in learning the central conceptual and strategic content. Distinctly different kinds of instructional tools and activities-Logo programming, expert tutors, or algebra microworlds-can thus be brought to bear where each is most appropriate and effective.  相似文献

In Tennessee, several medical library outreach projects have involved collaborative work with health-care professionals, public librarians, consumers, faith-based organizations and community service agencies. The authors are medical librarians who worked as consultants, trainers and project directors to promote health literacy using PubMed medline and other health information resources in the several funding projects described here. We explain the programmes briefly, focusing on lessons learned and suggestions for those who follow us.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to provide information on basic issues in library management identified by the Medical Library Association's (MLA's) seventh triennial salary survey. METHODS: The survey was a Web-based questionnaire. A nonrandom sample of persons was obtained by posting messages to MLA's membership and to the MEDLIB-L e-mail discussion list. Employed MLA members and nonmembers employed in medical library settings filled out a Web-based form designed using common gateway interface (CGI) programming. RESULTS: Six hundred forty-five usable responses were analyzed by the Hay Group and presented in the MLA publication, Hay Group/MLA 2001 Compensation and Benefits Survey. Results from the 2001 survey in this article focus on pay and job satisfaction. Salary survey results since 1983 were analyzed to review trends in seniority, diversity, and pay equity. CONCLUSIONS: Given the age progression of respondents from 1983 to 2001, it is clear that succession planning is a core issue for medical libraries. Although efforts to create more diversity in medical libraries in member organizations have started to yield results, pay for white respondents has increased at a higher rate than for other racial categories. The authors found that the pay-for-performance system in the organizations of approximately two-thirds of the respondents is suboptimized and that most of the reasons medical librarians cite for leaving their organization can be addressed and potentially changed by management. Results from the eighth salary survey, slated to be conducted in the fall of 2004, will further track these trends and issues.  相似文献

What is the organizational impact of becoming a digital library, as well as a physical entity with facilities and collections? Is the digital library an add-on or an integrated component of the overall library package? Librarians see sweeping environmental and technological changes. The staff members feel exhilarated and challenged by the pressures to adapt quickly and effectively. Librarians recognize that a Web presence, like other technology components, must be continuously enhanced and regularly re-engineered. The Health Sciences Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is reinventing its digital presence to better meet the needs of the community. This paper provides a case study focusing on major changes in planning processes, organizational structure, staffing, budgeting, training, communications, and operations at the Health Sciences Library.  相似文献

This study examines the intersection of two key reform ideas in science teacher education – professional teaching standards and the use of case methods. In this article, we track the historical development of what can be called second wave teaching standards and describe how those standards can be exemplified through multimedia web cases of science teaching. We describe a web case development project in which a group of experienced secondary science teachers work together over several months to video their own classes, and assemble video and audio commentaries of their lessons based on a set of science teaching standards. We conclude that the project was a rich professional development experience for those involved. Further, as the teaching standards movement gathers momentum in Australia and elsewhere, we contend that high quality multimedia cases linked to a standards framework show considerable promise as a vehicle to assist science teachers to reflect on their practice.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the complex and dynamic inter-relationships between individual science teachers, the social space of their work and their dispositions towards teacher leadership. Research into the representation of school science departments through individual science teachers is scarce. We explore the representations of four individual teachers to the assertions of teacher leadership proposed by Silva et al. (Teach Coll Rec, 102(4):779–804, 2000). These representations, expressed during regular science department meetings, occur in the social space of Bourdieu’s “field” and are a reflection of the “game” of science education being played within the department. This departmentally centred space suggests an important implication when considering the relationship between subject departments and their schools. The development of an individual’s representation of teacher leadership and the wider “field” of science education appears to shape the individual towards promoting their own sense of identity as a teacher of science, rather than as a teacher within a school. Our work suggests that for these individuals, the important “game” is science education, not school improvement. Consequently, the subject department may be a missing link between efforts to improve schools and current organizational practices.  相似文献

The Internet has been seen as a resource for reforming education. Researchers and reformers have had some success in developing reform-based innovations using the Internet. However, most teachers who use the Internet are not part of such projects and instead, are developing their own approaches to Internet use. This study explores the experiences of one teacher as she uses the Internet on her own as a tool for changing her practice. Ms. Owens is a high school chemistry teacher who used the Web as part of a unit on nuclear chemistry. Her experience suggests that reform by way of the Internet is complex and challenging; that it makes huge demands on teacher knowledge and time; and that, even with commitment and effort, the results can be distant from the kind of science reform at which the NRC Standards are aimed.  相似文献

In Australia, the Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) remains a popular program but considerable anguish persists within the university sector over just what it is offering students. In this article, we use the process of postgraduate socialisation to understand how candidates, supervisors and administrators navigate pathways to successful completion and offering of a DBA program. We identify four modes of knowledge applicable to the DBA and suggest that universities and candidates may draw on one another's cultural capital to determine which mode(s) can be offered. We also illustrate how candidates exercise agency through their cultural and social capital as they move through the program. We present a conceptual framework to help guide future research, and resource allocation on the DBA.  相似文献

Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is a much debated and studied construct. In this article, we adopt an all‐embracing view of PCK to examine the development of one elementary science teacher's knowledge over a 10‐year period. We portray this teacher's knowledge at three critical points in her career—as a student teacher, beginning teacher, and established teacher—and represent and analyze the growth of her science PCK using the metaphor of a knowledge tree. The tree metaphor shows that while science knowledge begins as the major branch of science PCK, it is soon overshadowed by the general teaching and interactive knowledge branches of science PCK; however, taken together, all three branches contribute over time to the formation of a healthy, established tree of science PCK. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
