London 2012 was a contradiction of Kipling's meretricious couplet about East and West. What was the response of the East, specifically the South Korean media, to London's selection as the host city of the 2012 Olympics? Furthermore, what were the various viewpoints of the South Korean media regarding the significance of London hosting the Olympic Games hard on the heels of the Beijing Olympics? Answers to these questions can provide insights into the geopolitics and politics of modern South Korea, which has very different relationships with China and Britain. An analysis, macroscopic and microscopic, in terms of politics, economics and culture, of media reactions in South Korea to the Olympics of the two nations can provide illuminating insights into a sports mega-event as an instrument of soft power. 相似文献

To better understand factors underlying educational and career choices, this study used both survey data from an online networking tool and data collected in college classrooms to gauge differences between Asians (primarily Korean) and white students in the United States. More Asians (41%) than whites (9%) prioritized prestige over happiness, while more white students (67%) than Asian‐American students (28%) deemed happiness as paramount in selecting a college. When assessing their parents, more Asian Americans thought their mothers (51%) and fathers (34%) emphasized prestige in choosing a college than white mothers (9%) and fathers (17%). In addition, Asian parents were assessed as much more prone to stress the importance of financial independence in career selection while white parents were perceived as prioritizing career enjoyment. Certain parenting techniques were much more common among Asians, such as reminding children of parental sacrifices made for the next generation, teaching them that academic performance is a matter of family honor and prodding academic success by comparing their accomplishments with those of children of family and friends. These findings may reflect a conscious strategy to overcome racial discrimination if education is seen as the primary path to upward social mobility. Awareness of the social and emotional cost of the staunch emphasis on the duty to succeed is important for those involved in educating and providing career counseling for college students with an Asian family background. Acknowledgement of pressure to honor parental expectations of narrowly defined acceptable academic and career achievement should be a part of counseling sessions that might otherwise focus exclusively on individual aspirations without due recognition of an interdependent, collectivistic orientation where upholding family expectations is integral to perceived success. 相似文献

This paper deals with the use of the critical path method (CPM) and CRIT, a computerized CPM program, as a tool for reporting and developing management information systems for hospital decision making. A CPM analysis was applied at the Microbiology Department of Deaconess Hospital to coordinate and synchronize the various tasks for efficient management. Its numerous benefits are cited. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a trait emotional intelligence (EI) measurement for Korean adults. This scale was developed because there is still a lack of EI measurements that consider the effects of culture on emotions. It was found that the scale has a three-factor structure, and this structure was confirmed in cross-sample validation. If the construct validity of the measurement is confirmed in further studies, scholars as well as practitioners will be able to use the instrument in designing and evaluating EI development programs. In addition, by using the scale within various cultural settings, the effects of culture on EI may be uncovered. 相似文献

AbstractThis paper makes a bold attempt to make sense of contemporary Koreans’ common expectation of the educational role of public school teachers by tracing its historical and cultural roots to the neo-Confucian humanistic tradition of the Joseon dynasty in Korea that lasted for about 500 years until Korea began to modernize in the late nineteenth century. In this attempt, the key concepts to be explored as equivalent to the Western idea of ‘liberal learning’ are the Confucian ethics of ‘learning for oneself’ and its relation to schooling and teaching. The discussion focuses on whether and how this ethics of learning can be recovered in such a way as to accommodate the postmodern condition of our society, as the educational legacy of the humanistic tradition of East Asia that can keep the public spirit alive in (post-) modern schooling. 相似文献

Abstract The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of regular exercise on spleen and peritoneal exudate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lymphocyte proliferation by splenocytes. Twenty-four female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into trained (n = 12) and untrained (n = 12) groups. These two groups were further divided into mice that were studied at rest (trained/rest, n = 5; untrained/rest, n = 6) and immediately after a 2 h acute bout of exercise (trained/exercise, n = 6; untrained/exercise, n = 6). The animals were bred in the animal facility of the Yonsei University College of Medicine, where they were housed in a temperature- (22 – 24°C) and humidity- (50 – 60%) controlled environment, with a 12 h photoperiod, and provided with food and water ad libitum. The trained mice underwent 10 weeks of endurance swimming training (5 days per week) in water at 26 – 29°C for 60 min. Changes in body mass, proliferative activity and the production of reactive oxygen species from spleen lymphocytes and peritoneal exudate cells were determined. The splenic lymphocytes of the trained mice had much greater proliferative activity than those of the untrained mice (P < 0.05). Trained mice had lower ROS production in splenic lymphocytes and peritoneal exudate cells than untrained mice. In both groups, there was substantial inhibition of proliferative activity stimulated with medium, concanavalin A and lipopolysaccharide following the acute bout of exercise. This may have been caused by excessive ROS production following the acute exercise session. 相似文献

In this paper, the model matching inclusion problem for input/state asynchronous sequential machines (ASMs) is studied in the framework of corrective control. The considered ASM receives the external input with various frequencies which hinder full use of inherent reachability of the machine. We elucidate the existence condition and design procedure for a state feedback corrective controller that makes the closed-loop system have the largest behavior contained by a given reference model. To demonstrate the practicality of the proposed control scheme, experimental studies on an asynchronous error detection and correction (EDAC) module are conducted by implementing the controller and machine on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) system. 相似文献
