Pro-oxidant and anti-oxidant status in patients of sickle cell anaemia

The role of oxidant damage to red cells in sickle cell anaemia has been of interest in recent years. Although, available reports suggest that sickle cell erythrocytes are susceptible to endogenous free radical mediated oxidant damage there remains discrepancy in the status of antioxidant enzymes and antioxidant vitamins in these patients. In view of this, 107 cases of sickle cell anaemia (36 ‘SS’ and 71 ‘AS’ pattern—as confirmed by haemoglobin electrophoresis) were subjected to analysis of malondialdehyde, ascorbic acid, superoxide dismutase and albumin. The results were compared with 54 age and sex matched healthy controls. The results indicate a marked increase in lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase levels in both ‘SS’ and ‘AS’ types of sickle cell anaemia as compared to controls. Although no difference was observed in the levels of albumin in these groups the levels of ascorbic acid were significantly depleted in sickle cell anaemia patients. The results are indicative of enhanced lipid peroxidation along with imbalance in the pro-oxidant and antioxidant status in patients of sickle cell anaemia.  相似文献   

Oxidant-antioxidant status in colorectal cancer patients—Before and after treatment

Erythrocyte antioxidant glutathione and malondialdehyde levels in erythrocytes and plasma glutathione S-transferase levels were estimated in patients with colorectal cancer and compared to controls. Further, the patients underwent four weeks of radiotherapy with adjuvant chemotherapy. The same parameters were estimated after four weeks of radiotherapy and compared with pretreatment levels. It was observed that there was a decrease in erythrocyte glutathione and malondialdehyde levels in patients with colorectal cancer compared to controls, but not in case of GST. However, after chemoradiotherapy, there were no statistically significant differences in all the parameters studied.  相似文献   

Biochemical changes in polymorphonuclear leucocytes in patients suffering from diabetes

The microbicidal capacity of polymorphonuclear leucocytes of diabetic and control subjects was evaluated by estimating the release of lysosomal enzymes viz beta-glucuronidase, lysozyme, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, in response to a particulate stimulus-serum treated zymosan (STZ). The cells untreated and pretreated with cytochalasin B were exposed to STZ The total enzyme activities were estimated after cell lysis. The total enzyme activities were not altered in diabetic subjects as compared to control subjects. The release of lysosomal enzymes by cells pretreated with cytochalasin B was high as compared to untreated cells. The release of lysosomal enzymes from the cells isolated from diabetic patients, untreated and pretreated with cytochalasin B was reduced as compared to controls. The findings of the present study that the total lysosomal enzyme activities are normal while the release of these enzymes in response to stimulus is impaired in diabetics, suggest that the bactericidal capacity of these cells which involves phagocytosis is impaired in these patients.  相似文献

Orthogonal functions approach to optimal control of delay systems with reverse time terms

Using block-pulse functions (BPFs)/shifted Legendre polynomials (SLPs) a unified approach for computing optimal control law of linear time-varying time-delay systems with reverse time terms and quadratic performance index is discussed in this paper. The governing delay-differential equations of dynamical systems are converted into linear algebraic equations by using operational matrices of orthogonal functions (BPFs and SLPs). The problem of finding optimal control law is thus reduced to the problem of solving algebraic equations. One example is included to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.  相似文献

Pathogens, especially Gram-negative bacteria or bacterial endotoxin, along with other classical factors, may be involved in inflammatory response within the aortic endothelium during the progression of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that bacterial endotoxin activates various inflammatory processes in the body. Our study aims to establish a correlation between endotoxemia and vascular expression of antioxidant enzymes. Swiss albino mice (4 weeks old) were fed a high fat diet for 24 weeks and then were administered Escherichia coli endotoxin intraperitonealy, for 4 weeks. Tissue antioxidant enzymes, serum levels of IL-6 and TNF alpha were measured from the mice. We report that i.p. administration of endotoxin to hyperlipidemic mice resulted in elevation of superoxide dismutase and catalase enzymes, which was paralleled by a systemic reduction of serum cholesterol and LDL expression. Myeloperoxidase levels were also found to be elevated in aortic tissue, while an increase was also observed in the serum cytokine levels.  相似文献

The essay explores the mobility of Whiteness in networks of Communication Studies that posture themselves as speaking from the Global South. Depoliticized languages of de-westernizing, internationalizing, and decolonizing are often articulated by elites in North-South networks pushing neoliberal governmentality, erasing claims to radical equality that emerge from within socialist struggles in the Global South. In resistance, a radical framework of knowledge from the Global South emerges from within subaltern struggles for hegemony, achieved through (a) delinking from the metropoles of the North and (b) explicitly crafting a socialist anticolonial politics that names and dismantles Whiteness as a capitalist project.  相似文献   

Hyperhomocysteinemia, as an Independent Risk Factor for Retinal Venous Occlusion in an Indian Population

Total plasma homocysteine was analysed in 64 cases of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) of which 24 cases of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and 40 cases of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and compared with 45 age and sex matched control. Homocysteine was significantly increased in RVO cases in respect to control (P < 0.001). Analysis also revealed that prevalence of rise of plasma homocysteine was more in cases of CRVO (OR = 13) than that of BRVO (OR = 5.03).  相似文献   

An initial preparation for human cadaveric dissection ameliorates the associated mental distress in students

It is universally recognized that cadaveric dissection is an essential part of anatomy training. However, it has been reported to induce mental distress in some students and impair their intrinsic motivation (IM) to study. One of the postulated reasons for this behavior is the lack of adequate information and preparation of students for cadaveric dissection. Therefore, it is hypothesized that providing relevant information prior to cadaveric dissection will ameliorate the mental distress, enhance the IM of students, and improve their academic performance. A cohort of occupational therapy students enrolled in an anatomy course were psychologically prepared for cadaveric dissection. Students were provided with a curated list of YouTube videos and peer-reviewed journal articles related to cadaveric dissection prior to the commencement of the anatomy course. All students were also required to attend an oral presentation immediately before commencing dissection. The control group included students who had not been provided with any resources in preparation for cadaveric dissection. Compared to the control group, students who had been prepared demonstrated better quality of cadaveric dissection, improved academic performance, reported less mental distress and greater IM. Moreover, students reported the oral presentation to be most relevant and journal articles to be least useful in their preparation. Therefore, this is an effective approach in the amelioration of mental distress and improvement of performance in anatomy students. Consequently, this study represents a paradigm shift in the pedagogy of anatomy, and could represent a vital element in the evolution of a revitalized anatomy curriculum.  相似文献   

An Interesting Case of Polyuria in a Child

A 1 year old male child with increased frequency of urine associated with increased thirst was found to have some developmental delays. Laboratory investigations showed increased serum sodium level and serum osmolality with decreased urine osmolality. An empty sella turcica was seen in contrast brain MRI; however focal demyelinating lesion was not present. He was managed with intranasal desmopressin therapy. Developmental delays in such cases can be prevented by early referral to a tertiary health care center where laboratory and imaging facilities are available.  相似文献
