The Counter-Elite＇s Spirit Reflected in The Bridges of Madison County

The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller occupies an important position in American popular literature. On August 16, 1992, The Bridges of Madison County debuted on the New York Times bestsellers list and it spent the following three years on Times bestsellers. In this fiction, the author knit the story from multipoint views to portray Robert Kincaid, the hero in the novel, and how he showed his counter-elite＇s spirit with his behavior during the 1960s in the United States （US）. The present paper, first of all, gives a brief introduction of the story. Then, the paper mainly explores the novel from two aspects： Robert Kincaid＇s challenge against the industrialized American society and the counter-elite＇s spirit reflected in the novel. The paper concludes that Robert Kincaid is a counter-elite in the industrialized American, where elites are the mainstream of the society.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

As an increasing number of Jewish summer camps welcome campers with disabilities, it becomes more important to understand the experience of these campers and that of their neurotypical peers. In this study, campers with disabilities and neurotypical campers participated together in a photography activity. Photographs and their accompanying narratives were analyzed, yielding three categories of results: (1) camp community and responsibility (2) Jewish experience at camp; and (3) challenges and opportunities. Results are discussed in terms of enhancing the experience of inclusion at camp for all campers.  相似文献

Visual news media's framing has been well studied; however, production factors and cultural conditions involved in photographer–subject interactions have attracted less scholarly attention although they are no less influential in determining the depiction. Guided by social constructionism theory, in-depth interviews with staff photojournalists at a daily community newspaper in the Midwest and an analysis of their work revealed 22 variables that impact how and why images look the way they do. Photojournalists have complete control of only two of these variables, share partial control of 13, but have no control over the remaining seven. The photographers also shared insights into how to improve their journalism's verisimilitude when dealing with reactive subjects. The results support concepts of social constructionism that the subjects of photographs are most comfortable with photographers who share similar characteristics, but that some characteristics can have greater influence. The results also highlight areas where photographers might focus in pursuit of authenticity in journalistic photographs.  相似文献
