A formal mentoring programme to align equity mandates with research outputs: A case study

Abstract

To sustain research outputs while progressively ensuring that staff profiles reflect demographic realities, the College of Human Sciences at the institution under study embarked on a formal mentoring programme in April 2009. The focus of the programme is to mentor newcomers to academe by productive academics who will be retiring from the system over the following decade. The aim of the research was to investigate the functioning of the formal mentoring programme and to determine the extent to which the programme provided for research output opportunities after one year of implementation. A qualitative intrinsic case study approach was followed, employing document study and in-depth individual interviewing. It was found that planning had been thoroughly done and the formal mentoring programme was professionally implemented. Concerns about an initially too formalised approach were counteracted by building flexibility into the reporting on mentoring initiatives. A cost to mentoring was found to arise from the fast-tracking of unrealistic research output expectations.  相似文献   

Why Men Run

The philosophical groundwork of modern (naturalistic) physical education is based on the doctrines of dualism and empiricism—together, empiricistic dualism. Dualism has taught that the intellectual and physical aspects of our experience are qualitatively distinct substances. Empiricism has argued that all knowledge has its origin in, and takes the fundamental form of sensory experience, of experience rooted in bodily sensations. On first inspection, both dualism and empiricism give the impression of promoting a respectful regard for the body and its main expressions, including physical education. They tend to get physical education widely advocated and widely practiced. They do not, however, succeed in promoting a fully humanistic regard for physical education, and they thus prove ultimately unfavorable to its practice. Dualism stands in the way of a balanced interpretation of humanity's intellectual and physical parts; empiricism fails to account for the balanced contributions of reason and sense to human consciousness. The one-sided philosophical basis of modern physical education is therefore opposed to an authentically human practice of physical education and is in the greatest need of reformulation.  相似文献

随着我国科技创新战略和创新型国家建设战略的深入实施,提高科研经费的使用效率成为促进我国科技发展的关键。本文运用扎根理论,从我国科研经费管理和科研工作者的角度,通过对文献探讨和深度访谈获得的资料进行分析,明晰了科研经费有效使用的特征,识别了影响科研工作者有效使用科研经费的因素,从环境因素、科研工作者、科研经费投入与产出等方面构建了影响科研经费有效使用的"四因素"立体模型,提出了以科研经费制度、科研经费管理、科研成果评价、科研工作者学术责任等为核心的科研经费有效使用管理模式,对促进我国科研经费使用效率的提高具有重要的现实意义。  相似文献

对104个高校人文社会科学学报的数据采集,探索现阶段高校学报的本校科研人员发文情况,并分析其对高校学报影响力的影响。研究表明：高校学报的本校科研人员发文比率在20%—60%之间;985或211高校、具有社科博士点高校学报更倾向于刊发本校作者的论文;从区域上来看,华东、华北、东北的高校学报更倾向于刊发本校作者的论文;CSSCI 和非 CSSCI 高校学报在本校科研人员发文占比上差异不显著;高校学报的本校科研人员发文占比并未显著影响学报的影响力。  相似文献

[目的/意义] 信息偶遇是信息获取行为的一种特殊途径，研究信息偶遇发生的影响机制，能够为科研人员信息偶遇发生的内外环境设计提供理论参考，丰富信息行为相关研究。[方法/过程] 首先剖析过程视域下信息偶遇影响因素模型，再借助系统动力学模型分析信息偶遇影响因素间因果关系，构建相应的流图模型，最后通过仿真分析以量化形式探究各影响因素对信息偶遇发生的作用关系。[结果/结论] 过程视域下科研人员信息偶遇系统主要由用户、信息和情境3个子系统所组成。其中，个性特征、信息质量水平和行为情境能够显著促进信息偶遇的发生，任务情境显著抑制信息偶遇的发生。  相似文献
