Research into parents’ secondary-school choices suggests that many middle-class parents are keen to secure a middle-class peer group for their children. This article reports the findings of a small-scale, qualitative study into whether a similar phenomenon exists at primary-school level and, if so, why. In-depth interviews were conducted with 56 middle-class parents of pre-school children in inner London. Respondents often had contradictory impulses. Nearly all liked the idea of a socially mixed school but many associated the ‘wrong’ mix with various risks. Some of these perceived risks are familiar from previous studies. Others are less familiar, such as the fear among respondents that they themselves might not ‘fit in’ at their children’s school. The types of intake which respondents preferred fell into three overlapping categories: children from ‘pro-school’ families, children at a similar level of achievement to respondents’ own children and ‘people like us’. Respondents’ judgements about whether children and families fell into these categories were based in part on ideas about class, ethnicity and language. Respondents gravitated toward schools where most children were perceived to come from middle-class, white, English-speaking backgrounds. The article argues that attitudes towards children learning English as an additional language need to receive greater attention in future research. 相似文献

This article is about the clothing of country gentlemen in late seventeenth and early eighteenth century England. It begins with an exploration of the London-centric depiction in popular literature of country gentlemen as old fashioned in their manners, dress and lifestyle. It then explores the main elements of male fashion and the role of London in creating and disseminating it. ABSTRACTThe present article uses Nell Dunn's Up the Junction (1963) to explore class, gender and the city in the 1960s. It focuses on three elements: the book's representation of post-war, urban working-class identity; the place of gender and sexuality within that representation; and, finally, Nell Dunn's own position as a middle-class observer. It argues for the continuing relevance and dynamism of class as a social referent in post-war, ‘affluent’ Britain. The article also explores the meaning of ‘slumming’ in the context of the mid-twentiethcentury city, against the background of ‘affluence’ and the emergence of the ‘permissive society’. What becomes particularly apparent in both contexts is the importance of femininity and female sexuality in the representation of mid-twentieth-century London, whether in terms of the portrayal of working-class women or the position of the middle-class author. 相似文献

摘要:2006年羽毛球比赛实行21分制,使强队之间的比赛更加激烈,比赛结果更加不确定。面对新情况,研究主要采用专家访谈、实践设计等方法对中国国家羽毛球队备战2012年伦敦奥运会体能训练过程进行了全面的分析。结果表明羽毛球项目是以有氧能力为基础,磷酸原和糖酵解为主要供能方式的运动。我国羽毛球运动员存在功能性动作障碍、运动损伤率较高,腰伤已经成为影响队伍正常训练的最大障碍。通过矫正性练习可以有效预防损伤,并改善身体形态、动作模式、提高运动表现。羽毛球体能训练体系主要由评估、方案、反馈、完善4方面构成。伦敦奥运会备战体能训练划分准备期、赛前期、比赛期和恢复期四个阶段,在一般训练和专项训练衔接方面,功能性训练起到了很好的纽带作用,奥运会前的程序化参赛演练为运动员的最后备战起到了锦上添花的作用。 相似文献

The Rokeach Value Survey was administered to four equivalent groups of students studying in London. It was hypothesized that a number of differences would occur between these groups based on their country of origin, respective affluence and traditional cultural values. Half of the values showed significant differences between groups with the British Control Group and the Europeans being most often more similar to each other than the other groups. The Africans were most different from the three other groups. These results were interpreted in terms of cultural and economic differences and related specifically to the literature of sojourner adjustment. Limitations of the research are also noted. 相似文献

近代上海的开放把它变成了有名的"十里洋场",作为中国近代出现的第一批知识分子中的一员,王韬19世纪40年代末初次来到上海时就被发达的西方物质文明所吸引,并成为他后来进入上海墨海书馆从事翻译工作的重要原因.虽然王韬承认西方文明有其自身的优点,虽然进入上海墨海书馆工作是自己主动的选择,虽然其收入之高令人羡慕,可王韬却把自己在上海和西方人合作的生活描写得苦不堪言.他再三表白他不得已而为之的苦衷,希望能获得朋友们谅解.为西方人工作使得王韬受到传统社会的排斥,置身于中西文化的激烈冲突之中,成为生活在正统社会文化边缘的"边缘人".在墨海书馆工作的10年中,他一直抱有强烈的"华尊夷卑"的观念,总是为自己不得不为夷人工作感到非常耻辱,一直陷入对自己的"事夷"行为的深深地自责和挣扎之中,表现出对西方文化的强烈抗拒. 相似文献
