This paper draws on the philosophical works of Emmanuel Levinas — namely, his notion of “useless suffering” — in order to
open up questions of learning and community beyond typical configurations that structure (and sometimes limit) social attachments
according to a requisite degree of commonality. It is argued that while discourses of knowledge and emotion enable a sense
of understanding and feeling with others, they nonetheless cast differences in a universalized discourse of enlightenment,
wherein the other is reduced to a version of the same. Turning to the Levinasian notion of “useless suffering,” I consider
instead the conditions of possibility opened up paradoxically because the other cannot be rendered in pre-given terms. In
so doing, I hope to contribute to on-going discussions in the context of feminism and education interested in theorizing the
conditions of possibility for coming together across differences, neither consuming the other as an object of information,
nor reducing her or his experience to a version of the self. My argument is structured around Lourdes Portillo’s (2001) most
recent film,Missing Young Women, which documents the disappearance, rape, and murder of over 200 women working in Juarez, Mexico. One scene in particular
is referenced as a way to underscore how the Levinasian notion of “uselessness” might orient a mode of attentiveness that
renders one responsible before understanding, concerned before feeling. Constituted asa prior responsibility for the other, it is suggested that “useless suffering” shifts the dominant terms of education and feminism
away from the formation of common bonds (in knowledge and emotion) to underscore the conditions of possibility that might

This study examined the relationship between polyvictimization, psychological distress, and trauma symptoms in college men and women. Childhood victimization was common among participants. Regression analyses revealed that polyvictimization (i.e., high cumulative levels of victimization) is a better predictor of psychological distress and trauma symptoms than is any individual category of victimization (i.e., sexual, physical, peer/sibling, child maltreatment, witnessing/indirect, or property crime). Gender did not moderate the relation between victimization and distress and trauma symptoms. Implications for counselors are discussed. 相似文献

This paper examines the composition of the gender earnings gap among young European higher education graduates, with a particular
focus on competencies controlling for individual background and job characteristics. The results show that much of the female
worker’s earnings advantage can be explained by job characteristics. With respect to the competencies required at current
jobs, we find that foreign language proficiency and computer skills play a large role in explaining part of the female earnings
advantage. Additionally, estimation results by each one of the countries included in the analysis show that gender earning

This article examines challenges in writing histories of feminist reforms in schooling and educational administration. The focus is gender equity reforms in Australian schools since the 1970s, looking at how those earlier interventions are now remembered, represented and forgotten, in policy memory and collective narratives. Such feminist endeavours were part of the policy landscape and the administration of schools during the 1970s and 80s. I argue that feminist agendas can also be examined as themselves sites for managing the conduct of teachers and students and for regulating new forms of identity and social relations. These paradoxical aspects of feminist reform are analysed through a Foucauldian lens. The discussion identifies contextual themes in JEAH before considering debates within gender and feminist history. A revisiting mood has initiated a stocktake of the stories told not only about feminism but also the accounts feminism gives of itself. Extending this, I propose that critical attention to memory and the movement of received and revised historical narratives is vital for analysing the legacies of feminist reforms and how they might be (re)animated in the present. More broadly, it is suggested that attention to policy memory offers fruitful directions for historical studies of educational administration. 相似文献
