The Role of Agricultural Education and Extension in Influencing Best Practice for Managing Mastitis in Dairy Cattle

Purpose: To examine the role of agricultural education and extension in influencing the adoption of best practice with regard to herd-level mastitis management.Design/Methodology/Approach: Somatic cell count (SCC) is an indicator of herd health with regard to mastitis and is negatively related to productivity and profitability. Panel data regression methods are utilised here to quantify the role of agricultural education and extension in reducing cell count and in influencing farmer best practice with regard to herd health. The impact of education and extension on farmer uptake of milk recording is of particular interest. Data utilised is farm-level Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data for Ireland over a five-year period (2008–2012).Findings: Farmer uptake of formal agricultural training and liaison with agricultural extension services are shown to significantly improve mastitis herd health. Collectively, education, extension and milk recording results in an overall SCC reduction of 25% for the average herd. Farmers who undertook agricultural training were ten times more likely to monitor milk quality through milk recording compared to those who had not. Additionally, those farmers in contact with an extension service and also participated in a dairy discussion group were seven times more likely to practice milk recording.Practical Implications: The importance of farmer behaviour in the optimum management of herd health has been validated, as has the role of agricultural education and extension in influencing the uptake of best practice by farmers.Originality/Value: To date little research has been conducted using nationally representative herd-level data on the role of agricultural education and extension in improving animal health best practice.  相似文献

为全面客观地测度江苏省工业化阶段水路运输资源配置效率，应用数据包络分析(Data Envelopment Analysis,DEA)方法的C2R模型和C2GS2模型实证研究各种配置效率.数据分析表明，与铁路、公路运输相比，水路运输不存在相对过剩的投入规模，其综合效率、技术效率与规模效率的均值最小.要提高水路运输资源配置效率，需要在交通系统内协调配置各种运输方式的交通资源，同时协调水路运输内部各部门单位的资源配置.从资源配置的角度出发，相关部门在交通资源配置之前对各种运输方式的资源配置效率进行横向比较与纵向比较相结合的全面客观评价是必要的，也是可行的.  相似文献   

Public and private school efficiency and equity in Latin America: New evidence based on PISA for development

Using the recent PISA for Development (2017) learning survey, we offer new evidence on whether there is a private–public schools efficiency gap in Latin America and the role of distinct barriers and inequality on efficiency. We obtain school efficiency scores using Data Envelopment Analysis from 705 schools in four countries – Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras and Paraguay. We find that the private schools efficiency is 0.88 whereas it is lower for public schools (at 0.82). Thus, there is a positive efficiency gap for private schools, with the lower efficiency in public schools may be explained by the additional obstacles they face (such as higher prevalence of student work). However, there is a greater scope in public schools of boosting efficiency by decreasing inequality and the provision of remedial classes. Whole sample results seem to be driven by two countries: Ecuador and Paraguay.  相似文献

It is impossible to deny the significant impact from the emergence of big data and business analytics” on the fields of Information Technology, Quantitative Methods, and the Decision Sciences. Both industry and academia seek to hire talent in these areas with the hope of developing organizational competencies. This article describes a multi‐method research agenda that was executed to ascertain insights regarding which knowledge, skills, and abilities, (KSAs) are valued by employers seeking to hire entry‐level analytics professionals from schools of business. Current undergraduate business analytics programs are first examined to define the research scope. A triangulated mixed‐method research approach is then used to determine the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are in demand for entry‐level jobs in this area. Finally, the multi‐method triangulation of data is combined with experiences in building academic programs in business analytics at two nationally‐ranked state universities to offer insights for those seeking to develop academic programs in this area.  相似文献

针对目前航运电子数据交换（Electronic Data Interchange，EDI）报文标准不统一导致的航运EDI数据共享比较难的问题，提出一种模式类方法.利用Visual Studio软件设计一个基于模式类的航运EDI数据共享系统，并对该数据共享系统进行验证.验证结果表明：模式类方法能集成不同标准报文中的相似部分；用户可根据自己的需求生成需要的EDI报文格式；数据冗余减少，报文的可阅读性增强，系统性能提高.模式类方法为数据共享提供了一种新的解决方案.  相似文献

应用蒋家珍、钟秉枢研发的<羽毛球比赛数据分析系统>,对林丹与李宗伟在全英羽毛球锦标赛和瑞士羽毛球公开赛决赛中的场上技战术运用情况进行数据分析,对发球与接发球技术、不同比赛回合的拍数、最后一球得失分、每球最后一拍的技术使用频率与对应效果、各项技术的全场使用频率5个方面进行统计,对两场比赛的胜负结果转换原因进行了分析.研究结果表明:与全英赛相比,瑞士赛双方的高远球、高吊球增多,多拍回合增加多,形成有利于李宗伟技战术风格的场上局面;他在多拍回合中捕捉到更多的进攻机会,从而在一周内实现了从0:2到2:0的胜负转换.  相似文献
