Islam represents one of the world's major rhetorical patterns, claiming nearly half a billion adherents from northern Africa to Indonesia. And yet, Islamic rhetoric has received relatively little scholarly attention in the West. Language differences and historical animosities dating back to the Crusades help explain this deficiency. Typifying the Judeo‐Christian view of Islam, Dante placed the Prophet Mohammed among the lower circles of Hell, with other “sowers of scandal and of schism.” Even as late as 1893, a Christian leader stood before an international conference of the world's religions and described the Middle East as “a desert of Mohammedan superstition and bigotry.” 相似文献

ABSTRACT In today's technically sophisticated, information-rich environment, consumers are bombarded with information. Consequently colleges and universities must develop ways to get the prospective student to give their promotional material more than a cursory glance. Pre-purchase service evaluation has received little attention beyond the nature of cues used by consumers to categorize service alternatives. The studies presented in this paper examine the usefulness of Means-End Theory in developing effective recruitment brochures. Empirical evidence is presented that demonstrates college brochures that emphasize attributes (e.g., cost, location) over consequences (e.g., getting a job) or values (e.g., security) will generate greater interest in an educational institution. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper explores how perceived attractiveness of the social life at a college/university influences potential applicants' likelihood to request information from, visit and apply to (decision approach actions) that school. Results obtained from a study of high school juniors indicate that attractiveness of social life, defined in terms of characteristics of the people and experiences to be found at a school, is at least as important as quality of education in determining the likelihood of a candidate undertaking decision approach actions toward a school. This study applies the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse to the television spots from the 2002 Korean presidential campaign. TV ads appear to have become an institutionalized component of the Korean presidential campaign; as yet no study has examined the most recent Korean presidential ads. Like American candidates, Korean presidential candidates rely more on acclaims (positive utterances) than attacks (negative statements). They also rarely defend in spots. The incumbent party candidate, Roh, offered more acclaims than the challenger Lee, whereas the challenger Lee used more attacks than did Roh. However, unlike American candidates (who emphasized policy over character), policy (issue) and character (image) were almost equally discussed in Korean advertisements. Unlike American presidential candidates, the winner in Korea in 2002 emphasized character more than policy. It is clear that presidential campaign messages from these two cultures possess both similarities and differences. 相似文献

“大众化”是中国现代文学的一条重要的发展脉络。“五四”时期诞生的平民文学观念开启了一条对平民社会“启蒙 认同”的思想认知传统;1928年创办的《大众文艺》表现出“左翼”文化阵营内部对“大众化”问题的歧见;1930年代的“文艺大众化”运动使中国现代文学的“大众化”趋势加速向“左”转,“大众化”被等同于“普罗化”,这一过程中存在着比较明显的缺失。因此,五四至抗战期间现代文学“大众化”趋势的内部实际上具有一个“双重指涉”的意义空间。 相似文献
