ABSTRACT

New information and communications technologies have transformed the archival enterprise in less than a quarter century. They have changed the way we work and, more importantly, our relationship with the wider society. Access to archives has increased immeasurably and spurred demand for use of archives. At the same time, in a painful irony, public support for archival work is under attack. The democracy studies movement suggests ways of thinking about archives and their role in civil society. Student documents, including scrapbooks, diaries, and student organization records, are invaluable resources for the study of higher education, reform movements, and intellectual and social trends. Not only do they provide fodder for scholarship and classroom instruction, these materials serve the multi-faceted research needs of administrators, alumni, and the community. ABSTRACT

This article examines the current phenomenon of blogging from an archival point of view. To better understand the nature of blogs, the author conducted an informal survey of bloggers at Princeton Theological Seminary. The results of this survey show that blogs represent a dynamic but ephemeral new form of electronic record and writing practice. This article concludes that blogs have archival value and that archivists should proactively preserve them along with other electronic records.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The second edition of the International Standard Archival Authority Records for Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (ISAAR(CPF)2) focuses on describing entities as they exist in reality, rather than on establishing authorized terms. This change allows authority records to include multiple authorized terms representing an entity as it changed over time. Traditionally, an authority record has been created for a corporate body each time its name changed. This practice results in an artificial, fragmented view of the entity, concentrating on heading control rather than on providing contextual information necessary to assist with the provenance-method of retrieval and the interpretation of the records. In order to describe entities as ISAAR(CPF)2 allows and better reflect records-creating environments, the author proposes that an authority record describe a definable unit that performs a distinct function without major temporal interruption.  相似文献

Drawing on communication accommodation theory in a law enforcement context, young adults rated one of four written vignettes wherein an accommodating or nonaccommodating police officer issued a ticket for a minor or major traffic violation. The officer was rated less favorably along both cognitive and affective dimensions when he nonaccommodated rather than accommodated the offender. The effect of officer accommodation on evaluations of officer competence and social attractiveness were both mediated by intergroup sensitivity. These effects, which supported the theory, emerged irrespective of the severity of the violation. The findings add to the literature regarding the effects of intergroup sensitivity and open up new affective parameters for communication accommodation.  相似文献

Abstract

Many of the processes for interlibrary loan are not unique to law firms, but may have unique applications given the substantially shorter deadlines and the possibility of allowing increased costs. Rapid borrowing of standard and obscure material-same day or next day deliv-ery-via interlibrary loan is considered standard. Within that environment, learning how to make tools which will work the first time can make the difference between meeting deadlines and failure. Discussion includes principles of interlibrary loan behind the immediate transaction, a discussion of applying “fair use” to a law firm context, the history and philosophy of interlibrary loan, and the nature of collaboration. Specific tools for interlibrary loan are discussed with an application to a law firm library context. Bibliographic utilities (like OCLC) and the use of lender Online Public Access Catalogs are discussed for maximizing the percentage of first attempt affirmative responses. The role of consortia and the use of online resources are discussed, with an eye towards licensing issues that can prevent lending libraries from providing information. Lending and borrowing policies are discussed with a focus on the nature of reciprocity. The positive and negative impact of using broadcast e-mails to identify and find resources is outlined. Request transmission protocols like the ALA form, OCLC and other methods of request transmission are discussed within the context of law firm interlibrary loan. Protocols for when transactions go awry are discussed. The role of continuing education is emphasized.  相似文献
