Three definitions of ``quality' have entered the qualityassurance (QA) debate: quality as value for money, quality as fitfor the purpose of the institution, quality as transforming. The firstis pivotal for retrospective QA, which sees QA in terms ofaccountability, and conforming to externally imposed standards. The lasttwo are pivotal for prospective QA, which sees QA asmaintaining and enhancing the quality of teaching and learning in theinstitution. In this paper, the reflective practitioner is taken as themodel for prospective QA. Three stages are involved in institutionalreflective practice: articulating an espoused theory of teaching, thequality model (QM); continually improving on current practicethrough quality enhancement (QE), in which staff development should playan important role; and making quality feasible (QF), by removingimpediments to good teaching, which often arise through distortedpriorities in institutional policy and procedures. AbstractThis case study critically evaluates benefits and challenges of a form of assessment included in a final year undergraduate Religious Studies Open University module, which combines a written essay task with a digital audio recording of a short oral presentation. Based on the analysis of student and tutor feedback and sample assignments, this study critically examines how teaching and learning practices linked to this novel form of assessment have been iteratively developed in light of the project findings over a period of two years. It concludes that while this form of assessment poses a number of challenges, it can create valuable opportunities for the development of transferable twenty-first-century graduate employability skills as well as deep, effective learning experiences, particularly – though not exclusively – in distance learning settings. 相似文献

Through a synthesis of test publisher norms and national longitudinal data sets, this study provides new national norms of academic growth in K–12 reading and math to help reinterpret conventional effect sizes in time units. We propose d?, a time-indexed–effect-size metric to estimate how long it would take for an “untreated” control group to reach the treatment group outcome in terms familiar to educators—years/months of schooling. It serves as a supplement to conventional effect-size metrics, such as Cohen's d, by taking into account different amounts of time needed for learning at different ages or grade levels. Through applications to Project STAR small class effects and NAEP racial achievement gaps, we demonstrate how to interpret and use d?. It is expected to provide a more developmentally appropriate context for interpreting the size of an effect, a step toward bridging the gap between educational research and practice. 相似文献

In the late 1990s failure rates in a first-year introductory calculus course at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology
reached peak levels. This paper reports on findings from an action research project that was set up in 2002/2003 to improve
the situation. The study confirms that students approach their tasks differently which contributes to qualitatively different
learning outcomes. Furthermore, patterns of achievement in mathematics and physics in secondary education keep reoccurring
in the calculus course, even though the teaching and learning contexts are different. The paper does not provide any definite
answer as to why groups of students get involved in distinctly different learning processes, and it will take further research
to decide the nature of commitment to the learning tasks. However, inspired by the notion of ‘practices’ this paper raises
a discussion about the role of intentionality in learning processes. When doing mathematics, students are also in a process
of being engaged in and developing a practice. It is a major challenge for academic staff to contribute to communities of
