Changing the marks-based culture of learning through peer-assisted tutorials

We describe and evaluate an approach to student learning that aims to instil a culture of formative assessment based on peer-assisted learning. The idea is for suitably qualified undergraduates to assist in the running of weekly first-year tutorials. They mark submitted work, provide written and verbal feedback and lead problem-solving discussions during tutorials. However, contrary to normal practice, the marks they award do not contribute to the students’ end-of-year total; all tutorial work becomes essentially voluntary. We report results from a pilot implementation of the scheme over a 12 month period in an engineering department at a leading academic institution. The scheme was such that a comparative and triangulated assessment was possible among the students and tutor team. Results show no discernible degradation in student attendance, submission rates and performance in either the weekly exercises or end-of-year examinations. Important benefits to the peer tutors are also found.  相似文献   

Degradation characteristic of 4-bromdiphenyl ether in mixed solutions by electron beam irradiation

The degradation characteristic of 4-bromdiphenyl ether （BDE-4） was investigated in different solutions.The study indicates that the process of direct degradation of this compound is dependent upon the bromine and the ether bond connected to diphenyl by electron beam.laser flash photolysis was employed to determine the degradation of each species （cationic,neutral,and anionic）.From these data,intermediate products of BDE-4 degradation were shown for direct irradiationdegradation.The neutral radical was formed during the photolysis of these compounds.For all the compounds,diphenyl ether and hydroxybiphenyl were observed as common products.Reaction of the BDE-4 under electron beam was debromide.The debromide rate of BDE-4 at pH=5.5 is somewhat lower than that of BDE-4 at pH=10.0.The decomposition rate for BDE-4 is 99.8% at pH=10.0 on the dose of 14 kGy.BDE-4 from its radical could provide bromine ion into water and the cation radical of BDE-4 formed quickly recombine with hydrogen radical and formed phenyl ether.  相似文献

Librarians Flip for Students: Teaching Searching Skills to Medical Students Using a Flipped Classroom Approach

This article describes the development of a flipped classroom instructional module designed by librarians to teach first- and second-year medical students how to search the literature and find evidence-based articles. The pre-class module consists of an online component that includes reading, videos, and exercises relating to a clinical case. The in-class sessions, designed to reinforce important concepts, include various interactive activities. The specifics of designing both components are included for other health sciences librarians interested in presenting similar instruction. Challenges encountered, particularly in the live sessions, are detailed, as are the results of evaluations submitted by the students, who largely enjoyed the online component. Future plans are contingent on solving technical problems encountered during the in-class sessions.  相似文献

Like most of its peer institutions, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries faced the challenge of meeting the needs of a growing number of students taking online courses. The author, hired as the new Virtual Learning Librarian in January 2016, was charged with creating a new Virtual Learning Program. This tutorials-based program was first fully implemented in a fully online Entomology graduate program. TLC闪存存储单元随着擦写次数不断增加,错误概率快速增大。基于TLC闪存信道结构,利用原模图LDPC码字扩展以及变量节点与TLC闪存存储页匹配关系,提出了一种速率兼容原模图LDPC码,所设计的速率兼容原模图LDPC码在保持信息位长度相同情况下,可实现可变码率,能够适应TLC闪存擦除次数增多而导致的不同纠错能力需求情况,编译码时只需一对LDPC编码器/译码器即可灵活处理所有码率,从而提高编码器/译码器的硬件利用率。仿真结果表明,所提出的速率兼容原模图LDPC码优于未经过逻辑页匹配的速率兼容原模图LDPC码,当误码率为[10-4]、码率分别为0.90、0.82、0.75时,所提出的速率兼容原模图LDPC码信噪比性能比基于PEG算法的非规则LDPC码均提高0.2dB以上。  相似文献

As Internet and computer technologies have evolved, libraries have incorporated these technologies into the delivery of information literacy instruction. Of particular benefit is the ability of online tutorials to deliver information literacy instruction to students not physically present on campus. A survey of library and information science literature determines that while a variety of methodologies have produced mixed results, the majority of studies find online tutorials can often be as or more effective than face-to-face instruction. However, more consistent research methods are needed to draw meaningful conclusions regarding student preferences, satisfaction and performance in response to online instruction.  相似文献
