Variables that address student enrollment patterns (e.g., persistence, enrollment inconsistency, completed credit hours, course
credit load, course completion rate, procrastination) constitute a longstanding fixture of analytical strategies in educational
research, particularly research that focuses on explaining variation in academic outcomes. However, nearly all measures of
enrollment patterns are handicapped by untested assumptions about a more fundamental measure, namely students’ rate of progress.
In this paper, I first explain how a variety of widely used measures of enrollment patterns are inextricably linked to students’
rate of progress. I then describe a method of modeling mathematically students’ rate of progress that employs hierarchical
(multilevel) discrete-time event history analysis of repeated events. I conclude with an empirical example of the application
of this method in which I test several hypotheses concerning students’ rate of progress through the remedial math sequence
toward the outcome of college-level math competency. In addition to the utility of the method that is proposed here, the issues
discussed in this paper have important practical implications for institutional research, particularly with respect to the
use of the various measures of enrollment patterns to explain variation in students’ attainment.

ABSTRACTStudies have found that Faculty–Student Interaction (FSI) has many positive benefits for students including academic support, professional development, mentoring, and career planning. Research-intensive universities exhibit the lowest levels of faculty–student interaction within higher education. This article utilises qualitative methods to explore faculty, student, and staff perceptions of faculty–student interactions, particularly those that take place out of the classroom, at a research-intensive public U.S. university. We identify social distance between faculty and students based on unequal status within a rigid, hierarchically-organised culture as a key barrier to FSI. We then discuss methods that some of the faculty in our study used to mitigate their social distance with students in an effort to increase FSI.

Librarians are increasingly moving out of the library and into the wider university setting as patrons spend more time seeking information online and less time visiting the library. The move to embed librarians in colleges, departments, or customer groups has been going on for some time but has recently received more attention as libraries work to find new ways to reach patrons that no longer need to come to the physical library. Few universities have attempted to embed all their librarians. This case study describes how one group of health sciences librarians dispersed its professional staff throughout its campuses and medical centers.

Summary Evening staff members of the Research and Information Services Department (RISD) at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries have recently noticed an apparent increase in the use of the library by people perceived to be mentally ill. RISD staff members have found themselves in some ways unpreparedtorespond comfortably to this change. This paper, a case study, proposes reasons for this increased visibility of mentally ill people, and describes the challenges the staff members faced and how they overcame them. The RISD staff members acquired the knowledge and confidence they need to work with mentally ill people through communication among colleagues, review of the literature, and staff training.

Abstract The aim of this series is to highlight English language books that recently have been granted awards by major scholarly societies. This installment focuses on disciplines in the natural sciences and engineering/technology. Because award winning books have high core collection potential, selectors may want to give them priority for purchase.

ABSTRACT Given the many changes in our students and their study and research practices, libraries are finding it necessary to seek new ways to reach these students. The Undergraduate Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign created a new model to do so. Librarian's Office Hours are a hybrid of reference and instructional services that fulfill the dual purposes of meeting the needs of term paper research counseling and library workshops. This article discusses the strategies involved in the creation and implementation of this service and examines suggestions for the future of such a service.
