In this article we present Supervised Semantic Indexing which defines a class of nonlinear (quadratic) models that are discriminatively
trained to directly map from the word content in a query-document or document-document pair to a ranking score. Like Latent
Semantic Indexing (LSI), our models take account of correlations between words (synonymy, polysemy). However, unlike LSI our
models are trained from a supervised signal directly on the ranking task of interest, which we argue is the reason for our
superior results. As the query and target texts are modeled separately, our approach is easily generalized to different retrieval
tasks, such as cross-language retrieval or online advertising placement. Dealing with models on all pairs of words features
is computationally challenging. We propose several improvements to our basic model for addressing this issue, including low
rank (but diagonal preserving) representations, correlated feature hashing and sparsification. We provide an empirical study
of all these methods on retrieval tasks based on Wikipedia documents as well as an Internet advertisement task. We obtain
state-of-the-art performance while providing realistically scalable methods. 相似文献

The relations between students’ value orientations, decisions in conflicts between on-task and off-task actions in the classroom,
and experiences of motivational interference following these conflicts were investigated. It was expected that well-being
value orientation was positively linked and achievement value orientation was negatively linked to decision for off-task behavior
in such conflicts and that the higher students’ well-being value orientation, the higher their motivational impairment when
deciding for the on-task behavior and the lower when deciding for the off-task behavior. For achievement orientation, the
relationships were predicted to be reversed. The experience of motivational interference while performing on-task behavior
was, in turn, expected to be related to worse grades. Data from 817 students (mean age 13.44) from 35 classrooms were collected
using self-report questionnaires and analyzed in a series of hierarchical linear models. Analyses showed the relationships
as predicted. All relationships found were comparable to the relationships found for a conflict between school and leisure
actions after class. Results point out that even if students resist the off-task temptation in class, the mere possibility
of off-task behavior can impair motivation and achievement. 相似文献

The aim of this self-report study is to analyze proposed interrelations between value orientations, self-control, frequency of school–leisure conflicts, and life-balance in adolescence. Life-balance is defined as satisfying time investment in different life areas. The tested model posits that self-control is negatively related to conflict frequency and that the latter is negatively related to life-balance. Achievement and well-being value orientations, in turn, should be connected to the degree of self-control and the frequency of goal conflicts. In the study, 817 German 8th-graders with a mean age of 13.4 years participated. Results from structural equation modeling supported the proposed model. The results suggest that fostering self-control can be a promising approach to decrease the frequency of goal conflicts, and thus increase students' experience of life-balance. 相似文献

In order to improve learning efficiency and memory retention in medical teaching, furthering active learning seems to be an effective alternative to classical teaching. One option to make active exploration of the subject matter possible is the use of virtual reality (VR) technology. The authors developed an immersive anatomy atlas which allows users to explore human anatomical structures interactively through virtual dissection. Thirty-two senior-class students from two German high schools with no prior formal medical training were separated into two groups and tasked with answering an anatomical questionnaire. One group used traditional anatomical textbooks and the other used the immersive virtual reality atlas. The time needed to answer the questions was measured. Several weeks later, the participants answered a similar questionnaire with different anatomical questions in order to test memory retention. The VR group took significantly less time to answer the questionnaire, and participants from the VR group had significantly better results over both tests. Based on the results of this study, VR learning seems to be more efficient and to have better long-term effects for the study of anatomy. The reason for that could lie in the VR environment's high immersion, and the possibility to freely and interactively explore a realistic representation of human anatomy. Immersive VR technology offers many possibilities for medical teaching and training, especially as a support for cadaver dissection courses. 相似文献

ABSTRACTAspects of preventive conservation are central to the long-term preservation of archaeological sites such as Pompeii. Mitigating moisture ingress and its manifold effects on decay mechanisms such as salt degradation are of critical importance when planning durable conservation strategies. A suite of non-destructive techniques was used to diagnose decay mechanisms at an ancient tomb monument at the Porta Nocera Necropolis. Rising damp and salt contamination are shown to be actively contributing to on-going deterioration of the plaster surfaces. An existing shelter is shown to be inadequate in its protection. These initial results are used to inform a more in-depth, long-term survey as well as the design of a holistic preventive strategy. 相似文献

Off-task behavior in the classroom was conceptualized as a manifestation of students pursuing goals they bring into the classroom aside from achievement goals. Regulation during on-task and off-task behavior in action conflict scenarios was elaborated on using the constructs motivational interference and flow. It was argued that achievement and well-being values that students hold can be determinants as well as outcomes of these conflict experiences. Data from 697 students (mean age 13.43) was collected at two time points within one school year. Results supported a reciprocal model in which value orientations (t1) lead to conflict variables (t2) as well as conflict variables (t1) to value orientations (t2). 相似文献

It was hypothesized that students' value orientations are connected to their experience of motivational interference in a conflict between a school- and a leisure-related activity as well as to school marks as indicators of learning outcomes. In a self-report study with Italian adolescents (N = 433; M = 14.5 years) using a school-leisure conflict scenario, first, the relations between the 10 values introduced by Schwartz and the Inglehart-based Achievement and Well-being value orientations were investigated. Correlations and multidimensional scaling analysis showed overlaps as well as differences between the two sets of value variables. Regression analyses revealed that the Schwartz values were significantly related to the experience of motivational interference during studying and during leisure as well as to school marks. The inclusion of Achievement and Well-being value orientations explained additional variance of the three dependent variables. The relevance of individual values in explaining students' reactions to motivational conflicts is highlighted. 相似文献
