For most open universities, in fact for most universities, there will arise occasions when some online activities will have to be completed by all students in a very short time interval. These occasions usually result in a great rush to get online as quickly as possible; the rush is often made worst by the limited good choices on offer such that usually only the earliest can get the best. Choosing and confirming elective subjects, when only a limited number for each are offered, on a first-come-first-served basis is an example.At the Open University Malaysia the rush occurs when confirming offered subjects and choosing face-to-face meeting timetable. Most students rushed to be earliest to ensure choice slots in the timetable are obtained.Available I. T. resources such as Internet bandwidth and servers cannot cope with these short-term sustained peak demands. Unless these peak demands are met, however, online services will slow down drastically resulting in long queues of users waiting to be served. Providing excess capacity, if at all possible, to ensure these short duration peak demands can be met would not be cost-effective since most of the time these resources are not utilised. This paper will look at some cost-effective approaches to meeting these short-term peak demands.  相似文献

To ensure the success of the e-learning initiatives, OUM has developed its own e-learning management system, known as myLMS. Since its introduction, many modifications and improvements have been introduced to increase its effectiveness. It is now timely that OUM take stock of its students' attitudes towards e-learning. Thus, a survey was conducted on about 1,000 students at one of OUM's own learning centres, that is, the Kelantan Regional Centrel. The study indicated that generally the teacher cohort had a somewhat neutral attitude towards e-learning. The use of e-learning was more specifically aimed at achieving short term goals of obtaining good coursework and examination grades by capitalizing on the use of the Discassion Board and Courseware. A closer examination reveals that the females prefer the Discussion Board while the males prefer the Courseware. Learners in the Engineering and English programmes had more positive attitudes towards e-learning compared to learners in the Mathematics and Science programmes. Learners with CGPA 〉 3.0 who are categorized as high achievers are more positive towards e-learning as compared to the low achievers ( CGPA 〈 3.0). Age difference, learners' income per month, learners' Internet and e-learning habits were also found to be predictors of attitude towards e-learning.  相似文献

对多数开放大学来说,事实上,在许多大学中,总是会出现这样的情况,所有学生要在同一段时间内集中完成一些网上学习活动。这些活动通常造成学生在一定时间内蜂拥上网。由于学生较好的上网时间选择有限,网上学习拥挤高峰情况就会变得很糟。在通常情况下,只有那些最早上网的学生才能获得最佳在线学习机会。在马来西亚开放大学,当学生确认开设科目和占用网络槽口选择会面时间表的时候,往往就会出现网上使用高峰。大多数学生都会尽早赶去上网以确保能在时间安排表中获得网上会面的机会。那些可以利用的信息技术资源与功能,诸如互联网带宽和服务器等无法应付这些短时网络需求高峰。除非这些需求高峰得到满足,否则网络服务的速度将会迅速变慢,最终导致网络使用者排长队等候网络服务。假如可以提供超额的网络容量,要是可能的话,以确保这些短时需求高峰得到满足,那就不可能有成本效应。因为在大多数时间里,这些网络资源都没有得到充分利用。本论文着重探讨一些具有成本效应的方法以应对和满足短时网络高峰的需求。  相似文献

远程学习者经常面临地理、时间、心理、沟通空间等方面的交互距离(Moore,1997).相对于全职学生来说,这些有着全职工作、家庭责任的成人学生,在平衡学业、工作和家庭方面往往面临艰巨任务.他们经常需要努力寻找额外的时间和空间进行学习,经常需要付出额外的努力以确保他们与大学、辅导教师、同学保持联系.本文介绍了马来西亚开放大学通过利用文本信息这一最简单、广泛应用的技术,积极支持学生完成学业的探索,展示了如何利用移动技术促进混合教学方法,并为学习过程提供更多的灵活性和普遍性.文章利用定量研究和定性研究方法,探索了这一创新在帮助学习者更容易地回顾/定位/记忆课程内容、在线讨论、管理学习、坚持学习、记住与课程相关的重要日期和活动等方面的有效性.
Abstract:
Distance learners often face what is known as "transactional distances" in terms of geographical,time,psychological and communication spaces(Moore,1997).Comparing to full-time campus students,these adult learners who mostly hold full-time jobs and have family commitments face a daunting task in juggling study,work and family.They often struggle to find extra time and space to fit in their studies and frequently need to exert extra effort to ensure that they remain connected to the university,their tutors and their peers.This paper describes the efforts of Open University Malaysia in actively supporting learners in their studies through the use of text messaging technology,the simplest and most widely used of all mobile technology applications available.Further,it illustrates how mobile technology enhances the blended approach to instruction and lends more flexibility and ubiquity to the learning process.It also examines the effectiveness of the initiative in terms of helping learners to review/locate/remember course facts easily,discuss online,manage their learning,persevere in their studies,andremember important dates and actions to be taken related to the course.Both quantitative and qualitative data are presented.  相似文献

In the UK at the present time there is much discussion and debate about the evolution of the current arrangements relating to Quality Assessment. Part of this debate focuses on generic threshold standards which will be discipline based and used to ensure that graduates have the requisite levels of skills. Implicit in the full development of these standards is the inclusion of levels, used to indicate standards at intermediate stages of a student's development. To be useful and effective, these standards must be acceptable to a wide community, they must not date easily, they must not impede diversity of provision and yet they must be meaningful. This paper will address the necessary characteristics of such standards, offer the view that standards should be part of quality and demonstrate how this can be achieved. As a case study, the paper will include an outline of a set of standards for computing, and included in this will be attention to level. The ideas are based on abstraction and structure. The ideas in the paper will be seen to have wider applicability than computing.  相似文献

Abstract

University libraries provide support for institutions to achieve their objectives. To realise these objectives, universities allocate considerable funds for the library’s development and provision of needed resources that support teaching/research activities. This is for the simple reason that a university’s excellence is synonymous with the effectiveness of its library services. Hence, there is a need for continuous training and retraining for retention of librarians who manage the libraries to achieve the university’s objectives. Of the few on-the-job training models, mentoring as a Continuing Professional Development programme for librarians in a university library has often been overlooked. This study surveys the uses of mentoring in knowledge transfer for cataloguing, managerial, and research skills development for cataloguers in Nigerian academic libraries. The findings show that mentoring as a tool for knowledge transfer influences cataloguers and their skills development. The result indicates that mentoring in knowledge transfer has a moderate to strong correlation with skills development, and it improves catalouers’ proficiency and overall development.  相似文献
